What I love about this episode was that it addresses the misconception that socially anxious people DON'T want to do things. Bocchi wanted to play on stage, but she was too nervous to actually do it. Friends of socially anxious people will start to intuit when their socially anxious friend wants to do something, but gets in their head about it, and just need a small push to help them do what they wanted to do. This of course doesn't mean you should be forcing your socially anxious friends to do a bunch of stuff they don't want to do, but really good friends know where the line is and it's a great feeling.

I would challenge the idea that “lighthearted” is unserious or shallow, and that “grim” is serious or deep. The show is lighthearted but it does present social anxiety with earnest authenticity. It never feels like they’re making fun of hitori, instead of laughing with. It walks the line really well. Also it does show a few dark moments like in ep 8 the business men drinking at the isekaya or hitori seeing herself as a future drunk shut in in episode 10. They’re hinting at depression coming from social Anxiety but hitori is not there yet.

I don't really think the lightheartedness takes away from the depth to be honest. While a more dark turn to Hiroi's character would be interesting it isn't really necessary to make her a great side character, actually I prefer how the show chose to portray her. She IS an excellent musician and really kind person, it makes sense for bocchi to look up to her in a lot of ways, but the show doesn't divert from showing just how messy her lifestyle is, it isn't really the dream...but isn't hell either, and her telling bocchi that she's going to do great and to believe in herself cause she's already doing, without having to rely in any kind of vice, a lot of the things Hiroi couldn't do without the alcohol to push her.. did hit me. The situation also metters, Hiroi wouldn't just trauma dump into a teenage girl, one that she was trying to cheer up nonetheless, but there were still some pretty heartbreaking undertones in that conversation.
