The original inspiration and song title spelling of this song was Charlie Chaplin's song, later sung by Nat King Cole which was a favorite of my mother's. When I introduced the track to PTV Gen assumed the spelling I chose, S.M.I.L.E. was a nod to Timothy Leary's phrase, S.M.I.2L.E. .....

Perhaps the Chaplin reference was subconsciously knowing that Gen would get tossed out of the UK like Chaplin got tossed out of the USA.
