After Megyn Kelly shares a powerful public service message about school shootings, school psychologist Tom Kersting says “we have to empower our kids” to bring warning signs to the attention of parents and authorities. In the studio audience, a substitute teacher at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School says she’s on “pins and needles” to learn the identities of students killed.

Taking the “crazy kids” off of gun lists will not prevent them from getting guns or bombing schools. Unfortunately, this kid fell through the cracks as both his adoptive parents are deceased. He may have had no anchor after his adoptive mother died. So sad.

If I tell you what we should do you’ll shut me out. If the kid had a knife he wouldn’t have killed so many. I grew up in another country where regular citizens don’t have guns. It’s a shame that some times people would stab, but no such thing as a mass shooting. Like I said I’m American but I was born and raised in a country that don’t allow regular citizens to have guns. But when I moved back to the states when I was 19 I got a real culture shock. People here have too many guns. What do you expect when you have this many guns? It’s just sad nothing will get better here. Because you will forget it in a week or so. It’s what ALWAYS happens. Not smart enough to change it then obviously people are going to continue to die from gun violence.

You guys forgot the Las Vegas shooter, he shows no sign of psychology illness, no warning sign, coming from a perfectly normal and healthy family. To "predict" mass shooter is actually very difficult and near impossible. It's like wishfully thinking to predict crime and arrest them before they commit the crime.

No one said that, the guy said people are becoming more desensitised by violence in the media, particularly violent video games. This played a small factor in him being able to pull the trigger on kids, because you have to keep in mind as well this guy was mentally ill, on drugs as well which stopped him from thinking straight at all in the moment. And I'm saying this as someone who's played violent video games for as long as I can remember, trust me I'm not against violent video games.

I'm glad I got to experience first hand working around teenagers who are troubled. Even as a substitute, I spent time encouraging them and telling them I believe in them. They were SHOCKED when I was positive towards them and they always came around me knowing that at least somebody believes they can be and do better. There are parents who are afraid of their kids and won't discipline them! Teachers who dont care about their students, and students who don't care how they treat each other. We need to know the signs of a very troubled person so they can get help. Real help.

He wasn't even attending that school at the time. If he really wanted to shoot up the school, metal detectors wouldn't have prevented him from getting in especially if it's a large enough high school. They would have to place those detectors at every entrance and have it all being monitored. Schools and states wont provide that kind of funding. He could have easily slipped in or shot the security guards to get in even at that.

There were classroom doors that were locked and people were hiding too, as he was going through the halls shooting. You know what he did? He shot through the locks and glass. That's not going to stop him. I've been to many high schools, since I'm a substitute teacher, and there are always ways to get into the buildings because students are always finding ways to ditch or get by unseen. There's not many campus monitors or security either. As long as they time it right, any student can get in school buildings without being seen.

If you look into the V-tech shooting, there was an investigation regarding the mental health system and officials that were in charge of giving him treatment. It was found that the system failed him. That happens more often than not. The healthcare system in the U.S. is geared to make profit. A lot of patients are routienly just prescribed medication/drugs at an alarming rate because psychiatrists and insurance companies care more about $$$. It's also happening in hospitals. It's a shame and the politicians are being paid off to support a lot of these major companies. 18 shootings in 2018 all by angry males.

The Sandyhook video was great but let's agree kids like that exist the world over. In every other country however they do not have access to guns of any kind especially assault rifles. By all means address mental illness and society factors but first and foremost, address what enables these people (not just kids - Las Vegas) to commit mass murder.

It’s this mixture of keeping people constantly scared of on another to consume together with a very violent culture and a dangerous Pharma industry. Just how many kids are on Ritalin? How many adults have anxiety there? I have never seen so many people diagnosed with a mental illness than while I lived in the US. That has to be man made.

It’s interesting to think about that research of the targets used for practice and courage to actually shoot a gun.. because if that’s a fact potentially people who plan on self harm or to others, and have the experience of shooter games or even shooting activities, will have (to say) the courage to go with their plan. And it’s not saying shooter games lead to shootings.. it’s saying that it may encourage a human to actually pull the trigger and then again every human is different. There is also the psychological aspect where if a diagnosis for say schizophrenia is present, hallucinations and delusions may play a part as an encouragement to complete this type of crime.

I have a very intelligent daughter who has Aspergers. She has been in various institutions because of her sometimes depressive and aggressive behavior, has had a lot of help and many years of therapies. She is now a young adult and now lives semi independently, but all in all, little has changed. She ends up falling into the same pattern over and over and I just hope she never hurt anyone. I live in America, and am a responsible gun owner. I own mostly hunting and sporting guns such as bolt action rifles and shotguns. I have fired AR 15's, and AK 47's at the local gun range, and although it was an interesting experience, I never really had the desire to own this type of weapon. No gun I own has ever been used in violence, and never will, and I think I speak on behalf of many thousands of other gun owners. I am not against assault style rifles, I just never had the desire to own one. Keep your guns out of the hands of unauthorized people, lock them away, and always be aware of the potential danger that can be unleashed. If you know someone that shows signs of violent tendencies, and has access to a gun then....... DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT! Being a responsible gun owner means being a responsible citizen. Life is far too precious.

The bullying starts with that father who out of fun misbehaves and teases that 3 year old son. Adults who do that to that little one. Then that kid starts doing the same with the weaker ones in his class. And then out grows it while growing up. But the ones bullied then comes with a gun and shoots in a school. That father has to stop. That adult needs to be stopped. No kid is born a bully. It starts at home when you conceive a child. It's a huge privilage to create a child and it's a HUGE responsibility too.

it takes from birth to make someone like this, this is issues that needs to be taken care of from birth, you can't just change someone like that. someone with a killing tendency is already most of the time too far gone, only way to solve this issue is to time travel back and establish stability, trust and love into a child.

The cause should be treated, not the consequences. The reason is that family means nothing to you anymore, because you have turned all family values upside down. How can children be healthy when they grow up without love, without the warmth of their Father and Mother! You are still fighting so that the family is not a union of a man and a woman! Here are the fruits of your progressive struggle...as you sow, so shall you reap. Therefore treat the cause and not the consequences!!!

It's all fine and dandy for Kersting to say we need to tell kids to bring warning signs to attention of authorities. THAT'S NOT WHAT THE PROBLEM IS. The problem is the ADULTS who are in charge of law enforcement, the schools and other places are IGNORING the complaints and doing nothing about it. This is why all of this is happening. I have had it happen to me THOUSANDS of times, and it is rampant in America. We have people who have no business in their jobs they're doing who are incompetent and lazy a****. They need to be flushed out. It is happening on our state government levels and police departments. IT MUST END! This came during the Obama era and decayed society for 8 solid years. It is time to rebuild, do your job, RESPOND TO THE PUBLIC WHEN FILING A COMPLAINT or be dismissed. This is out of control!

That's a better point that people overlook. The common denominator of all these mass school shootings is that they are all males and have been described as outcasts. Part of the issue is identity and what drove these boys to commit these crimes. Both schools and parents need to do a better job of monitoring these students whether it's through therapy or more control of bullying. I've seen many fights and kids being picked on and most teachers won't do anything besides breaking up and suspending students.

I honestly think that's a fantastic start. Not sure how to begin conditioning men to express themselves. I only cry like 1-2 times a year. I can be irritable but most stress presents itself during sleep. Some people don't realize how damaging that can be. I realize it isn't healthy but it is difficult to be vulnerable.

I seems Congress does not care about the death of innocent Americans. Who forget Sandy Hook? The founding fathers have deliberately left a clause so that future generations can amend the document whenever necessary. The speaker knows very well in spite of the current laws, so many Americans are dying due to the semiautomatic guns. The 2nd amendment was adopted in 1791, and the overall social formation and challenges we have to day have changed than the time when the constitution was written. Every rational person knows that congress should have adopted new law (1) for mandatory psychological checkup and (2) disallowing the selling of automatic guns to the hunters. Unfortunately, lawmakers are under the control of the NRA, and, sadly, we have to die more.

that is WAYYYYY to high. you are ten times more likely to be an innocent person killed by a gun in the USA than you are in canada. i don't even want to cross the border anymore to visit my boyfriend's family. he has 7 guns. i like to shoot rifles. i hunt deer. but that is one bullet at a time. not a bleeping rain of bullets on kids. it's gonna happen in canada someday... maybe soon. it happened in a mosque by a trump-loving french kid. but when it happens in a canadian school it will be with an illegal weapon brought across the border illegally too.

you are sooo right... guns are the weapon not the problem.... the real problem are that americans are so arrogrant and believe that their country is the best at everything... they can''t bare look at everyone else because they think that they are better at everyone. Canada has better health care... Australia has a great education system and Norway has a really low uemployment number but Americans dont wanna hear that... They just want to hear how their country is great so they become ignorant to common sense. Its not a gun issue because Canada has guns.... alot of places have guns but the USA has the most mass shootings (64% of world) because they are oblivious to facts such as mental health and proper education of how to take care of guns to prevent self harm or anything in that nature

Common denominator is that these shooters were all males and in some way felt that they were wronged bullied outcasted etc. It's crazy in itself to see all of them at such a young age have all that built up anger and willing to commit these murders. What that says it's more of an issue about society and I think that is correct, Americans do have a superiority complex. Instead of acknowledging that there's a flaw in the mental health and education system, it's more about gun control. However, if people looked into the V-tech shooting, there was an investigation that was found that the mental health system failed him. The neglection by mental health system happens more often than not. The health care system cares more about profit and having people rely on drugs rather than actually finding better ways to improve their coping skills. Even Psychiatrists today would spend less than 15 mins with their patients and would rather prescribe drugs so it increases their profit.

It begins with the school security team that need to stop being lazy and do their job. I remember when I was in middle school there would be kids that would take knives and even guns to school they walked straight thru the metal detectors they would off and the security guards would just stand there and do nothing. Every school should have a well trained and armed security team just like every other private school.

So they say Nikolas Cruz showed many signs. We're is the help for children who have no parents. In Fl,the child can not get medical help,or even food stamps to eat, unless he is working.Does this fall into the mental health,I'm sure he had no medical coverage,at age 19.If a person has so many signs, maybe we need teen centers, were they can live, and get the help they need.Who and what living arrangements do we have in this country for children, maybe 15-24 years old to live safely and get the education, medical care, and food when parents die? Maybe thousands of other children out there in the situation?

The most obvious warning was the official ´I am going to become a professional school shooter´one. There are numerous warning signs that a psychosis is about to reach a critical level - one of them is blind acceptance of false beliefs and nonsense like airplanes causing towers to collapse, moon landings, belief in scizophrenia which causes scizoid behavior, delusions about the continents only being 7 in number, delusions about water shortages, global warming being man - made, and so on. Hysteria is a known contributor to warning signs of a mental disorder reaching critical levels. Interestingly, a lot of these mentally ill persons are bullies who become mainstream media news reporters and just go on believing their non sense...and will often say bizzare things like this before they finally break down.

I completely agree with Megyan. Why not have a yearly psychological test for children, just as they do for yearly educational testing. There are many ways you can implement testing for children without them knowing and come to know there feelings about life. The test can be observed yearly and compared to previous year(s) to see if there are changes in responses. There needs to be more actions to prevent tragedies. My heart goes out to everyone.
