I was accepted into a bachelor or psychology to study in 2004. Which was direct entry after school but I didn’t do it and my life took other turns. ive taken the myers briggs test a few times in high school(the online ones) and while some aspects of their descriptions matched my personality, several didnt. i guess because my personal life is so turbulent i was also constantly changing? trying to find balance? i am 17 currently, will be 18 in about 20 days, in highschool. i lost my father when i was 15 to myocardial infarction, my grandmother this year in january to cancer, and my aunt two days later also in january to suicide as she couldnt bear the death of my grandma. all in front of me. before the deaths of my grandma and aunt, they were incredibly rude to my mom, and in relation, me. bordering on physical abuse and definitely emotional abuse, altho my grandma let go of her behaviour after my dad's death. but i still loved them, because i grew up with them and with all the pain, they gave me love too. so a loooooot happened, i moved cities a couple times too. and then i took the myers briggs test again today after watching this video. i got INFJ-T as my personality type. an Advocate and apparantly incredibly rare, perhaps the rarest which is why there wasnt much info on it before a few years earlier. and every single detail on that site matched me to a T. made me feel recognized finally. and the career options for me also included psychology. ive dreamed of being several things, a detective, a singer, a percussionist, a writer, an artist, a lawyer(i was so good at its subjects and loved learning, before i got a teacher in 10th grade who refused to give me marks for the answers she herself had made us write during class, answers which everyone else got grades for. my prev teacher also saw my papers when my marks suddenly decreased and told me the new teacher was wrong for not grading me correctly, but i lost my confidence thinking i did something wrong) and finally had settled on being a surgeon which i had always wanted to be since my aunt was also a doc. after her suicide though, i cant handle the vision of anything "red" for a month, and i still feel guilty because what if i couldve done something to save her? after that, since i have always loved learning and psychology, i decided to not write neet(im from INDIA) and focus on what i actually wanted to do. and seeing the results of my myers briggs test today has given me further motivation and reinforcement. so i thank you for that. you really encourage me. may i know if you did masters+phd or only a masters after your bachelors? have you done a phd or plan on it? im new to this channel, and i havent had the time to research programs and uni life and everything yet so im still a bit confused on what the process is after high school, bachelors and a masters. i wish to be a clinical psychologist. i want to help people so they can lead a happier or more peaceful life than they are, so that i never have to witness someone go down the path my aunt did.

I have the INFJ personality type and am a mindfulness and Buddhist practitioner too. I am interested in spirituality and therapy and would like a career where I can continually learn and develop professionally (being remunerated for it is nice too). At this stage I'm leaning more towards counselling for practical reasons in that counselling emphasises therapy and the education pathway is less time and student loans, as you have talked about in other videos. Having said this I would like to at some stage in my career do my grad dips and masters in clinical psychology once I'm working and have paid off my student loan and can use it again >

Hey Meghana! That's fine to be honest, I think stats is definitely helpful because you will do it throughout your entire undergraduate, however you dont have to be strong in every subject to be a great psychologist. There will be a lot of research/ report writing- which they will teach you how to do :) I would probably recommend getting a tutor at uni- heaps of people struggle with stats so my uni even had a specific stats tutoring club!

Yet again, such good insight into your job! I keep hearing that clinical psychologists are getting rarer and rarer as the training pathway gets more competitive! As you said there was only 20 in your entire cohort?! From your experience have you found this to be true? Ie did you have plenty of job roles to apply for and is there usually lots of demand for people wanting to see a clinical psyc? Also, I apologise for all the questions I keep asking! Psychology post honours is such an unknown space and its so hard to find individual experiences.

Hey Sarah :) Yea it was a small cohort, in fact I think we ended the year with 17 as people dropped out. However in terms of needing clin psychs over generalists, I don't think thats as true. At my clinic both the clin and general psychologists have over a 3 month + waitlist! Definitely is the demand for it! :)

Also I have a question about salary, according to nhs - While training, clinical psychologists will be paid at band 6 and after completing their training, they will be paid at band 7. i would say you should definitely look forward to psychology, ofcourse only if YOU want to and there are many options to even choose from in psychology so if you think you cannot manage it you can always learn to manager it .what I'm trying to say is if you want it you should definitely do it and remember you xan do anything yeah it will be hard to manage everything but you'll learn it eventually and i read a quote today that"if your dreams don't scare you their not big" and i think our mind is capable of learning anything so go ahead that's all......i hope all that make sense😅

Hello! I completely agree with Krishna! If your passion is psychology and the only thing holding you back is the Myer Briggs test (which is based on shaky science anyway) then go for it! I think it's great using the MBTI if it helps you get a sense of your strengths and weaknesses and prepare for them e.g. if balance is an issue then building a sustainable routine. Besides the field of clinical psychology would be very boring if we only had one type of personality doing it!

I just discovered your channel and am finding it so helpful. I’m in my late 20s and considering going to University to study psychology. I actually did go to Uni for psych when I was 18 but had to drop out due to mental health struggles (ironically). Did you see many mature age students studying psychology when you were at Uni? I also struggle with a lot of mental health issues myself so I’m really scared to taking the leap in case the pressure of juggling work and study gets to me. I actually suffered from burn out this year due to my job so I’m terrified of experiencing it again. I don’t know if you can answer this but from your experience have you encountered many people with mental health struggles who were wanting to be psychologists? I have a panic disorder amongst other mental health issues and that’s why I had to drop out in the first place. I think I’m just really scared of failure and not being able to do it, hence why I haven’t been able to apply despite thinking about it for so long.

Hi! my gosh what a journey and its so awesome you have experience and want to pass that onto others. I know there were many mature age students in my cohort and to be honest I think they were better prepared in some ways. In regards to having active mental health struggles I'd say if its affecting your ability to study/ engage you might want to seek some ongoing support to make sure the study journey is smoother however I would definitely say after that you are in no way held back by having lived experience! (another option is also to become a peer worker whose role it is to share their lived experience with patients, and they are deeply valued in the mental health world)

I found it quite hectic however was able to manage PT ABA therapy. Definitely don't overload yourself however as your hons marks determines your ability to get into masters! Love that you're already thinking about work life balance ^^

Personally, I had nearly everyone including academics talk about how honours year is the most intense academic year for psychology. I did not find that to be the case at all. The coursework is effectively what you've been doing so far, without much of an added difficulty. The thesis itself is more or less what you have already done (a report). The key differences are: > You recruit and test participants > You design the experiment > You decide and conduct the statistical analysis. I imagine your program already has prepared you on all those points. I got a first class result and after data collection and background reading, I wrote up the entire paper in ~2 weeks. My advice for you is: > Clearly understand what your thesis is and what it isn't. Keep its aim in mind at every step of your writing. > Gauge your supervisor strenghts and weaknesses and understand that they are there to ADVISE. They give their best opinions and sometimes it is best to align with it as they tend to know better - this won't always be the case. > Cover lecture and tutorial material throughout the year with active recall. > Build a SOLID foundation on statistics if you don't already have it. Go through the textbooks and really *understand* what the different analyses do. This will allow you to deal with any unorthodox data, design experiments and other situations that the textbooks may not have prepared you directly for.

I’ve been interested in psychology for as long as I can remember, my father was an addict growing up and my mother had depression, I have depression, anxiety and ADHD so I’d love to be able to help people with these things as I understand what it’s like and I also think the mind is the most interesting thing ever, but the only thing is i have no idea how much they make because google told me 30k-200k which is such a huge range and I’m confused. I’m based in Melbourne, and I actually started my studies back in 2017 in Journalism...I took a year off and now I’m studying a Bachelor of Creative Writing, which I finish this year. I actually have considered a career as a psychologist but I would have to start a Graduate Diploma in Psychological Science since my Bachelor will be an unrelated discipline. I’m 23 this year, is that too old to start a career in psych? Hey Saffron! This is such a lovely comment ^^ The answer to both the are you too old/ too young is absolutely not! In my cohort there were people all the way from early 20's all the way up to 40's. I would recommend doing some kind of work within mental health- perhaps ABA therapy (working with children with Autism) might be appropriate since you've already done teaching assistant work which is great experience too. I'd say anxiety is completely normal, however if it is severe enough to make it really difficult for you to engage in study or the idea of sitting with a client is too overwhelming right now I would recommend seeking some support first to help you through. I always recommend people try therapy (I go to a psychologist myself and find it so helpful!). Best of luck!

I was 28 with a undergrad in finance working as an investment admin. Got my masters in Psy in 2017 and PHD in 2020(now 33). I took a 30k a year pay cut to leave my finance job but I have to much good and bad life experience to just be around people who have only been around the same type of people all the time. Psy is about knowing peolpe not about degrees. I work with people who have all the experience and degrees but half the time they give up on a patient bc they have no experience with bad childhood, addiction, sex fetishes that damage relationships, self-image issues, etc. Class work is nothing compared to going out in real life and meeting real people.Also, many female psychologists only want to treat women

Of course they can! Pretty much any type of personality can become a psychologist. Important to mention that some personality traits will make it a better fit (and some the opposite), so certain people could struggle and would be better off in a different career path. With all that said INFP is quite common amongst psychologists, some say it is the type most represented type in this field : )

Tho im not psych diaries, u can still become a psychologist regardless on what subjects u have taken in hs . Im in year 12 and I couldn’t take psych, but was told that i can still become one without taking it. sm people haven’t/ couldn’t studied it previously and still has become a therapist. Hello From Argentina! I didnt undersyand the salaries chart. "pshycologist" refer to general pshycologist, Right? What does "Senior" mean?? And "clinical" means clinical pshycologist. I´m looking forward to be a clinical psy, this says that the 1rst year of service is 95k Aus aprox (this amount refers to your first year AFTER you completed your master ad the 2 years of supervised work)

Yes refers to general, I believe general is if they're managing the team. And yes that would be after masters and your 2 years of the registrar program :)

I'm in high school and I'm interested in going into the field of psychology but I'm not doing psychology as a subject (couldn't fit it into my schedule). It really depends on the uni- I think the important thing is you need to get into the last psychology honours year. Whether you did a B Arts (major in psych) or bachelor of science I think matters (at least at UNSW they seemed flexible as long as you had also done stats). I think the best course of action would be contacting the psychology faculty at the uni you would like to apply for! :)

hi, I am a international student in Psychology science. this is my first year. I asked my uni that do I need to meet any requirement or GAP to get into fourth year (honour). they told me I am guaranteed entry into 4th year regardless of my GPA. is it different from different school? cuz I you said that "in order to study honour we need average 75% sth". and this 75% is the GPA from the first 3 years? if you have time to answer my question will be wonderful. I always confused about this part. and thank you for your video it was really helpful.

Oh interesting, at my uni you get guaranteed entry if you study a 'bacjelor of psychology' but you need to meet the 75 entry mark if you study anything else even psychological sciences or advanced science majoring in psychology. I would say ask a couple more uni and hopefully someone knows the answer! And if not get an of what they say so you have written proof :)
