I absolutely love the interpretations of Raz's father. The way a child can see an overprotective parent whose really just trying to prepare them in his own way, or try to shield them from the horrors of what their powers might cause them. It is just... pitch perfect for that and I am so happy we got to see the fact that Raz's father was a genuinely loving father.

This is one of the things I really love about the game: Through clairvoyance we see that everyone sees Raz as other than his true self, so it stands to reason that his view of the world is also incorrect. The reveal that his dad is not the psychic-hating monster Raz thinks, is one of my favorite details in a game full of favorite details.

@LORDOFDORKNESS425 жыл бұрын
I really like how open to interpretation they left The Butcher. Sure, little Oleander was *clearly* traumatized rather deeply by his dad's view on bunnies... but we never find what the real dad was actually like. Was he as big a monster as Oleander's mind recall him as, or is The Butcher as accurate as Raz's dad vs Raz's mental image of his dad? Really nice subtlety there. Don't see that often in games.
@Mr.Sparks.1735 жыл бұрын
My personal theory on Olly's dad is that his dad was like an old school "salt of the earth" type, built rather large but not overly so (maybe built like Edgar), running both a butcher shop and a small rabbit farm (which supplied the meat for his shop). He loved Olly dearly, but didnt want to hide the "facts of life" from him. He introduced Olly to where meat comes from perhaps a bit too early, and Olly was hence traumatized as a result. His father didnt recognize the signs of Olly's traumatization, and hence didnt get him the help he needed. Allowing the demon butcher of Olly's mind to form.

It's also interesting how huge and strong he is compared to Raz's image of his dad. Raz is only 10, the distortion isn't too absurd yet - Coach had several decades to toss that stone around his head, blowing it out of proportion one inch at a time.

@@pedroscoponi4905 you also should remember Ford's words "Psitanium makes unstable minds even more crazy" - Oleander through out his life WAS a good coach and psychonaut - but Psitanium poisoning latched on his untreated Daddy Issues and perverted his drive to prove himself born from it into Megalomania. It is actually very lucky that Sasha and Milla had their demons under control - imagine their minds being corrupted by Psitanium - over controlling Sasha and non stop party Milla that either lost her empathy for others or turned into super controlling psychic mother-monster.

Here's something pretty interesting: on the official Double FIne website(now closed for remodeling), there was an FAQ page, with one of the questions being: *What's up with the Psychonauts Meat Circus?* and the answer to that question was: _What's up with Meat Circus is that you're a big baby. Sure, sure, invisibility is very important when Raz's dad is trying to knock you off those tight ropes. And your shield will bounce the knife thrower's blades right into those spinning target wheels. And also you can throw a confusion grenade at that bunny and then just go pick it up, instead of trying to grab it with Telekinesis. Those things are also true. But the main point I'm trying to make here is that first one, about you being a big baby._ I just wanted to bring that up.

There are parts of this game that are incredibly cringe worthy but I'm amazed at some of the stuff they got right that people still struggle with. They seem to have taken a really humanistic approach to the characters and that's served them well. The only person who gets fully vilified is Dr. Loboto (even the camp bully gets that bit at the end when Raz's dad shows up). They didn't use the patients at the asylum for scares, and even though there were jokes their troubles get treated as real and deserving of care. (That one blue haired character deserved better, Fred really needs to get over himself.) There's an on going message that you need to be careful about what you say to kids because your words might hit way harder than you intended and what happens to kids stays with them their whole lives. The most interesting part is the way Coach Oleander's arc seems to be that his dad pushed him to suppress his softer more caring side in order to make him into a man, a role he physically wasn't able to fulfill to expectations. That's the sort of message I'm seeing in stories now, but not something I would expect from a PS2 era game. It's a comedy game but it's also really heartfelt and sweet. If only they could have addressed the weird obsession with body shaming.

Dan, Yahtzee from Zero Punctuation has an interesting stance you might like. He says that it's important to experience art (specifically older games) as they were originally; as products of their time and culture, flaws (or flawed viewpoints) and all. That remakes or updates of games robs us of this important experience. To see what was possible in the past, how limitations led to innovation, as well as to learn from mistakes and outmoded ways of thinking you have to see the original. And I think I agree with that. I think your playthrough of Psychonauts has solidified this in my mind. It has flaws, and many of them relate to mindsets that were acceptable previously, but have since been shown to be problematic or even outright harmful. I think it's good for people to see a game like this, take time to ask what was good, what wasn't, and why. We can learn from it as game makers or as fans of this art form. Maybe even as people, seeing how we have grown in our own viewpoint, or how we might need to grow. I really appreciate your work, from the OG Extra Credits, to this and everything else on PlayFrame and NewFramePlus. Discussing games as a fan, and as someone appreciating an art form critically. It has helped me appreciate my favorite art form even more, while helping me think about it more seriously than "just games".

I have to say, one of the things I've liked best about the story of this game is that it skips over the "adults underestimate the protagonist and treat them like they don't understand anything" part common to this sort of plot - Sasha, Milla and Ford all trust Raz and treat him as, if not an adult, at least something of an equal as soon as they realise how capable and mature (for his age) that he is. They don't brush off his claims due to him being a kid, or go into "oh, it's far too dangerous" mode once the truth comes out, which is a refreshing change of pace from how this sort of thing often plays out. I strongly suspect that's part of why the writing in the game works so well, it actively avoids a lot of clichés inherent to a coming-of-age story and avoids a lot of the pitfalls they can lead to as a result. Can't wait to see where things go with the sequel.

You probably want to do the VR game before you play Psychonauts 2, because it deals with some stuff in that game, and Psychonauts 2's trailer has a pretty big spoiler for Rhombus of Ruin which is more fun to discover yourself.

I just completed this game today. Took me 3 days can't wait for the second one on the 28th of August.

i'm very glad that raz kept his hat for rhombus of ruin and pn2. his hair is HORRIBLE and i am so happy i don't have to look at it for two more games

If you are looking for another comedy game like that, might I recommend a hat in time ? I think it would be right up your alley.

So, Psychonauts was before my time, I had always known about it in the background, but this playthrough has made me super interested in Psychonauts! I'll definitely pick up Psychonauts 2!

Yyou are right there is not a lot of comedic games out there. Robot Entertainment has a comedic side, but they don't focus as much on it as double fine. I'd be up for watching OMD on this channel or Brutal Legends

With this being the end of a old game about psychic kids and also earthbound also being the end of a long situation who would win ness or raz?

Finally got through a let's play of this game on my second attempt, the collectathon genre is not my favourite to watch gameplaywise. I think the only other collectathon I've seen a let's play of is Conker's Bad Fur Day. The (admittedly superficial) parallels i can draw to Mob Psycho 100 and Persona certainly helped drag me through this time around.

Hey Dan if you wanna try another game that also deals with the human psyche although with a more serious and unsettling tone, i highly recommend the somewhat old point and click adventure game called Sanitarium.

Dan, have you played Stacking?
@aaronsirkman83755 жыл бұрын
OMIGOD yeeeeesss, Stacking is a fun, funny, cute and disturbing game, could be totally up Dan's alley! Hop into people's SOULS and ride them around! Also everyone's a matryoshka.

It just crossed my mind - Dan, have you ever played one of the Supergiant titles? Like Transistor and such? They're pretty short, please consider! :D This playthrough was a blast, thank you very much. I'm now excited for the sequel, same as everyone else!

I'm wondering, wrt the sequel, how they will treat travelers with respect. They set up the premise of Raz being implicitly Roma, and now they have to reconcile that with modern sensibilities. Will they even address it?
