Great comparison. Thanks much! I just visited the site, and seems like that they changed the name of DG862 "shepherd" Vargan model. FYI, those of you who are about to buy the shepherd vargan - It is now DG862 "Kumardak" Vargan.

Nice video, Matt. Sound advice for beginners - go to Oberton Pro and get a decent (not the Compass/Kara-Tash) Glazyrin harp. Oberton Pro have a great range and the best prices, plus they are established, reliable and trustworthy. I'd also recommend grabbing a case when you buy from them so you can safely carry your harp in style without damaging the reed in your pocket. I'd love to see even more vargan/jews harp videos from you - keep them coming, dude! :-)

I ordered a lighthouse model from Oberton and was so rough I don't know how it made it out the door. Fit and finish were bad with bends, gouges, and dings in places that couldn't have only happened in manufacturing and assembly. None of the lines were straight and the tine had a series of bends that looked like someone tried to bend it back into place. I couldn't pull the trigger away from my face without it catching on the body because of the bends in the tine, and because the body had rough gouges and no straight lines along the tine. Pushing the trigger was the only way it worked but due to the tine catching the sides it wouldn't make a good sound. The edges on the outside were rolled in some places and gouged in others that definitely didn't line up symmetrical. It was a massive disappointment and someone in quality assurance sure dropped the ball.

Do different Jaw harps play different notes? (Does it have a key like harmonicas?)
@EL_Newman4 жыл бұрын
@@MattTastic0_0 Thanks!
@Kia044 Жыл бұрын
In short - yes. All harps have base pitch and sometimes they are tuned to a specific key. G is great for beginners if you want to learn pitch control for melodic play (F and A as well). Jaw harps are dual tone instruments. They all have a specific base pitch that's created by the reed vibration. It's formed by he reed geometry and weight and always stays the same. In addition to it the harp produces obertones from that base pitch - and you can work with them and change the note by changing the volume of the resonant cavity of your mouth and opening\closing your lungs. What's more interesting is - when you change the pitch up and down by moving your tongue with lungs in open or closed position - you can find the specific spots where obertones sound most pronounced and juicy. These spots correspond to all of the notes of the major scale octave for this key (plus extra A#) as well as parts of octave above and below that. You can train yourself to find these specific notes. After this - it's very much possible to use mouth harp as a universal musical instrument for any melodies that don't require you to go beyond 1,5 octaves.

@@Kia044 That’s awesome! Thanks for the detailed response. I would love to try it. Do you have any brand recommendations?
@Kia044 Жыл бұрын
@@EL_Newman I'm a bit wary of giving the recommendations about mouth harps, since at least in the budget segment there's a big variance in sound quality even among the instruments made by the same master. If you have a local store that handles ethnic instruments - it would be easier to visit them in person, ask them to show you several of the budget ones and choose the one that strikes your fancy. Then once you learn the basics of playing it and are sure that mouth harps are your thing - you may want to upgrade and expand. Premium mastercrafted harps sound is on a completely different level. They cost a bit extra - but that extra goes into premium materials and tuning. I can recommend the following masters from experience: Alexander Dernovoi - he makes drymbas that have both great sound and artistic visuals. Dmitry Babaev - a master that works both in budget and premium segments and provides great quality in both. If you can get one of his cheaper harps - that would be ideal for a beginner. He also makes recreations of historical instruments, like the vargans from 12-14th centuries found in a dig under Veliky Novgorod. Sergei Fomenkov - perhaps my favorite master. One of the few people that works with titanium. His vargans look like something you may find in a UFO crash. Impeccable sound, beautiful futuristic visuals, no hassle with rust, since titanium doesnt corrode. You may also want to look into Norwegian munnharpe masters, as they've pretty much written the book about the melodic mouth harp playing. Old masters like Folke Nesland are legendary, but very hard to find. Simen Roheim Iversen is one of the good modern masters. I think you can order some of Babaev and Fomenkov harps from Oberton Pro. You can also reach out to the masters directly through their web-stores or social media. They usually glad to take orders.

Hello, all DG has the same "technical" quality - any one will give loud, saturated sound. All has unbeatable price-to-loudness ratio and extremely popular among beginners or techno/trance/timbe effects-style players. But it is only one side... Among others are: 1) Sound pitch - most simple to hear even in sound recordings. 2) Mechanics of the reed - some are good only for basic strokes; some can maintain the same timbre with any usage. 3) Sound purity / overtones clarity - it is low among all DG except DH644 (DG848 in halfway).
