So emotional seeing this beautiful little railway for the first time in 55 years, since my dear Mum and Dad took me for a ride on the train as a young boy. Thanks for stirring such fond memories of yesteryear. 😊

Wow never thought I'd see a diesel powered steam locomotive! This would be a great idea for keeping and using steam engines around the world for the sake of keeping the look but having it be more efficient and easier to maintain.

Some of the iron castings on these Locos were made by my father in the 30's at Ashby & Anderson Ltd Foundry, Hunslet Leeds ( sadly long gone) I'm now 81yrs young but I remember as a 12/13 yr old taking several rides on these wonderful old girls....Regards Noel Anderson

Neptune, built in 1931 is the worlds oldest operational diesel hydraulic locomotive. The two original locomotives at NBR were built with diesel engines for ease of operation, but were outlined to represent the top express engines of the day, the Gresley A1/A3 class steam locomotives. The driver of the second train in this film is my son.

Before anyone else keeps saying it's a shame they're not steam. Let me explain: these are quite old diesels built by a very well known steam building company Hudswell Clarke during the depression of the 1930's and are quite unique and well built, they only built 9 of this type to keep the workshop busy and fortunately they all survive. They are not a modern lash up.

Great video and an amazing little railway. Cannot help but laugh at the mugs on here posting negative comments about the fact the locomotives are steam outline Diesels, do some research and you will find these locos have ran since the 1930's on this railway and have historical significance on there own. And they are an attraction in their own right. I visit Scarborough every year and the railway is always bustling and in fantastic condition with friendly staff, if you are visiting Scarborough I whole heartedly recommend visiting the railway and Peasholm Park where the railway is located.

I used to live in Scarborough and I loved this little railway. I knew one of the workers there, he was a nice bloke. It's what you call a "steam profile" model. They're easier to maintain and cheaper by a factor of 10, although you miss out on the feel of an authentic steam locomotive. They're good if you can't afford (or don't want to pay for) and/or can't deal with the necessary maintenance for the real thing but still want the look of a steamer.

For the uninitiated these are OLD diesel locos that have historic merit in they're own right, they were built by Hudswell Clarke a well known steam loco builders during the 30's depression and were designed to be economical for the operators. So much so that they could afford another within a year of operating. You'll notice they are quite faithful in outline to the original steam loco and not the usual abortion you see built today. All of the nine built survive today and all but one run.

My dad took me on the Peasholm Park railway in 1962. I take it this is the same one? I remember at the time being disappointed it wasn't proper steam but I felt the same about the Blackpool Pleasure Beach Express. Didn't spoil my enjoyment in either case though! Great little railway. Good to see that it runs both ways.
@28YorkshireRose125 жыл бұрын
Now... Blackpool Pleasure Beach has a very nice railway, or did, when I last went there. Not a scenic line like this, but by far more complex with branches and loops all over the place. I'm given to believe that their locos were indeed in steam, but converted to diesel at some later date. The trouble at Blackpool was that they were always cramming more attractions into the same busy piece of land, and the railway seemed always to be being lifted and relayed to give way to the other, more modern, attractions. Now, I rather thought that these locos at Scarborough sounded very much like they're powered by Perkins diesel engines, and not at all unlike the Massey Ferguson 165 we once owned, or the Perkins 4-154 diesel on our 'off-grid' generator (basically an updated version of the motor in the Fergy tractor).

then how come other miniature railways have proper steam engines with ACTUAL smoke and drivers directly behind?
@steveng62716 жыл бұрын
Raphael Smithwick because those are like you said actual steam railways they have been built to use steam traction these are used with Diesel engines in mind, if they were to put smoke generators in the locos that would involve more training.
