Russell was kinda the Zac Efron of his day. He was known as a Disney child actor and it was a bit of a jump to accept him as a big action star, but Carpenter pulled it off.

I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!!!! My favorite single movie, after all these years. The most complex, badass character ever developed for a film. It's timeless. Highly allegorical (Gee, don't we now live in a corrupt, police state?). I'm even finishing-up my first novel, where the main character, and the post-collapse rendering of Portland, OR are heavily inspired by this film.

The film has it's flaws all films do but what's truly noticable about Escape from New York upon watching it with 21st century eyes is just how well it's managed to hold up. Carpenter brings a cowboy swagger to this 80s sci-fi action classic, the dialogue, the score and the overall tone of the film feel like a spaghetti western set in the future. It's a trillingly seductive world that Carpenter creates in this iconic 80s popcorn classic and one brought to life by a terrific cast all of whom help cement the idea of a world gone wrong where being tough is the only way to survive, there are no lawyers, social workers, peace nicks or religious zealots in this world just hard people who do what they have to do to see another sunrise. Escape is one of Carpenter's best imo and manages to be a true gem from a decade that has it's share stand out action flicks. So let's hop in the gulf fire and glide into fabulousness, pop this manflick and take it for a spin I promise you won't be disappointed.

As much as I don't like the idea that he basically stole the main character, I think that Kojima is actually John Carpenter's #1 fan. That, and the interrogation sequence in MGS is basically a modified version of the police station introduction.

I didn't understand for years why i loved this movie so much, and why the sequel put me off so much. It's pretty simple and it's the same as most things in life (for me anyways) this film was made out of pure love and passion, with a low budget... the sequel cost 50 million to make... 45 million MORE, and because of all that extra spending and special effects bullshit, it doesn't feel real, it doesn't feel gritty, the streets don't feel... truly dirty, because they aren't!

The world that allowed Escape From New York to be possible was essentially if The Cold War hadn't ended, the anti-war crowd carrying over from the Vietnam War would escalated protests, and violent crime to the point that you needed to throw enemies of the state into an evacuated city turned into a prison. And the novelization of the film elaborates on that theme.

Frank rubbing that feather on the hat.. frickin genius. his slide down from the train car door with his hand over his eyes. pretty much every frame of that guy is genius. and even though I love Harry Dean, ive always wondered how Roddy McDowell would done in that part. He can play that kind of character to a tee, but Harry had that more pissed off childish thing which worked. but I felt like his character could've had some more dynamics, but then again would've drawn from Russels character. these were supports.. in this age of "origin" stories (which arent necessary in my opinion) but also have a GREAT potential to be great. unfortunately they usually feed off the main story line so much its worthless. Would love to see a Brain and Maggie story. Or even how The Duke and Romero met.
