Pt. 25 BMW E30 Purple Tag E46 Power Steering Rack Swap

Finally we have all the parts to make the power steering rack swap. Originaly the car came with a manual rack. In order to improve the hadling and overall experience I have decided to upgrade to power steering. To take it a step furtherwe are upgrading to a later model e46 purple tag rack which is 3 turns lock to lock (e30 rack is 4 turns). This dramatically improves the responsivness and hadling. Bravo and thank you always because I am doing the same complete job now in Australia on a 1989 325is RHD learning many skills and ideas from you. But I was crying tears for you watching this because I also have the sump pan off now and also the head, radiator, cooling pipes and every accessory. By loosening the engine mounts completely I could use a floor jack under the AC bracket to tilt up the engine so high the sump was easy to remove without removing the oil pump. I will reinstall the same way but for the gasket I will apply paper gasket (not cork) to the sump with some gasket sealant and hold in tight position with small cable-ties through corner bolt holes I can cut later. Did you get correct torque on all sump bolts or take a guess for the hard ones above subframe? I only wish you took the head off to show this technique of cleaning and new gasket. What was your technique for the crankshaft nut when you tightened it? Was it in a video I mised? How did you hold the crankshaft and what torque did you get because spec is like 400Nm? Why do you think your drive shaft small front bearing was bad? On checking mine it is like new still. Even the centre flex bearing was in fine condition I think original. The rubber guibo however needs replacing. Like you the engine bay wire connections are all failed including the thermostat on radiator for the cooling fan (I think helped to destroy the engine). I'm watching closely how you replace these items. You make it look easy. Thank you.

Thanks for watching 🙂 glad it is some what helpful. I did torque all small sump bolts to spec apart from the 3 in the very end by the gearbox and under the subframe. I didn’t take the head off as I know the head gasket is in order and I want to drive the car before tearing the engine internals apart. The crank bolt is also untouched since the timing belt was changed just when I got the car. So no worries there. I have a video where I fixed up all the wiring and re-soldered the broken connectors. Have you road tested your new rack set up yet? Any issues,or is it all good? I’ve just modified a Corsa c coupling just like yours but as my car is RHD, the power steering pipes need to be re made.

Hey, Ty really Much for the video, i’ve been searching a video from somebody who went from no power steering to power steering for a long time. I have a 316i (m40) and I wanted to ask if you know if there are major differences between the 4 cyl and 6cyl retrofit

Left hand steering wheel is 7852974678. The right hand has another number.
