I have always regarded him as the very best from Banaras Gharana along-with Pandit Sanju Sahai and Pandit Ramkumar Mishra. Yes there are bigger names, but on merit these three are currently the best players from Banaras style. In particular, all these 3 players are extremely fluent with tirekite and dheredhere syllables and probably at their best when they play tirekite, dhirekite or dheredhere relas.

Yes I agree these 3 players are very fluent...but in my opinion, Kumar Bhai should be on the list too....his nikaas, aesthetics and baayan work is just too magnificent to ignore...! I would put him as one of the best !

Although it is unfortunate that Arvind Ji hasn't received as much credit as he should ... I'm glad Sanju Ji is being widely acknowledged by people now

I agree, absolutely. Although no comparisons since every musician is unique and has some unique offering. Guruji Azadji displays 4 different and difficult styles of his Father Pt. Lal Baboo, his Guruji, the great Pt. Kishan Maharajji, the flamboyant Pt. Samta Prasadji and the magician Pt. Anokhelal ji.. It is extremely difficult to balance all three in one perfomance but Guruji does it with aplomb. And even in his accompaniment, be it on vocals or instrument or Kathak, Guruji is quite simply well ahead of other tabla players in terms of thought process of what and how to accompany. In addition to all of above, he is an absolute gem of a person. He has built a strong legacy in Pune with his shishya parivar which is growing and coming up brilliantly. Hats off to this wonderful artist
