Really nice vid. Spent some time a while back looking at IC temps on a Porsche turbo - I know how much time it takes. And I did not film myself. :-p One thing that most people do not realize: a fan actually moves relatively little air, especially when compared to what is blown through by driving. It obviously varies quite a bit from from installation to installation, but fans generally only provide a benefit under 30-35kph. After that, they are only along for the ride in a best case and block the airflow in many other cases. As such, they do more harm than good. Which is exactly the solution you came to.

For sure, every vehicle is going to be slightly different, but I do believe fans are generally limited in their functionality.

1998 Patrols used an intercooler fan below the cooler. This wouldn’t restrict the airflow like top mounted fans. Later models lost the fan, as it wasn’t needed. I found that the 98 patrol fan only started under the heaviest load conditions, like prolonged deep sand.

Yeah, much more efficient mounted underneath and pulling through. I also did this to my GU patrol a few years back and it was activated by a thermal switch. Cheers, Nathan.

Hi . Please check to total watts of these 2 fans , temperature went up due to more alternator loans added to the 2 fans . Even with good cooling , the 2 fan will cause the alternator to run more and temp will go up .
@XploringOz3 жыл бұрын
Hey mate, so even if the alternator was working harder, this will only prove that these fans are not worth the investment. Saying this, I don't believe that these two fans will have any significant bearing on the temperature of the charged air intakes. If the vehicle is working harder to turn the alternator, then the load is placed onto the combustion chamber, not onto the intake airflow (prior to combustion). Further, I have a lot of electrical equipment running in this vehicle and the alternator can cope with this gear just fine, the addition of these two small fans would be negligible.

What a shame you have to spend the first part of the clip justifying your stance to the youtube fk heads out there. Good video none the less. My old evo VI had intercooler spray jets. I wonder if a spray kit with fans would provide any significant results to a 4wd.... time for u to test that theory 😉🤣.

Yeah, it's unfortunate, however everyone is entitled to their opinion. I only aim to provide some information in the big picture so that people can go out there and make informed decisions for themselves. Hopefully this video can provide a new perspective on these fans. I reckon it would definitely provide a benefit and I actually ran a water sprayer on my GU patrol. The only downsides with this is the finite amount of water that could be carried vs the gains provided from it. Further, I have heard stories about water sitting in the 'V' of the engine block and causing damage over long term... I'm thinking a full intercooler replacement would be a good test also, however they aren't cheap and I'm still trying to justify whether they are worth the investment and value...

I wonder if the results would have varied if (instead of plotting absolute temps) you had plotted the temperature delta across the intercooler. Perhaps the results would have been more definitive. This would have removed the variability of the work across the runs. But it depends on whether the 200 has a sensor before the intercooler too.. I imagine it does though. On another subject, can you recommend a good maintenance manual to carry for the 200?
@XploringOz3 жыл бұрын
Potentially, good idea though. Maybe something I'll consider doing in future tests... The nearest sensor to the intercooler, prior to the cooling element is that intake temp (after the airbox). An aftermarket bung would have to be installed to see the temps immediately prior to the cooling element. So for manuals, I carry the hardcopy of the Hayne manual - haynes.com/en-au/toyota/land-cruiser/2007-2016?gclid=Cj0KCQiAnKeCBhDPARIsAFDTLTLi2khZDj3OKC0P-yx9fSj_eKnJYLIL4IKfunflGOiWknw1VFloIB8aAq99EALw_wcB Has most things you'll need in most circumstances to get you out of trouble if required. Nice follow up Nathan. I guess, the prescribed ideal outcome is two fold. 1. Increased power derived through lower egt. And 2 arriving at 1 at a safe egt. Can your test result methodology identify exhaust egt changes, with and without fans, using the OBD 2 Code functionality.?? Perhaps a more real world understanding of load vs piston temp. Doesn't the lc200 have egt sensors/ thermocouples pre or post hi and low speed turbo? Been looking at these codes for my scan guage and they seem to exist. But, my 79 is too old. Probably to do with dpf temps in more recent vehicles. Would be good to see egt's as the reference though.
@XploringOz3 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate. So yes, those results would be ideal. With this model of cruiser, I haven't been able to successfully obtain EGT temperatures from on-board factory sensors. I know that with my new Manta exhaust, there are easy to access bungs on each dump pipe that are designed for aftermarket EGT gauges. The only reason I haven't fitted these yet, is that I haven't found a location to neatly displayed two more gauge inside the cruiser cab. I could maybe hook something up temporarily, but currently don't have that equipment on hand...

Is it possible to mount the fan below the intercooler and and turn it into pull setup instead of push. I believe there isn't enough room within the intercooler shroud when the bonnet is closed hence the fan couldn't move enough air to give the extra cooling.

Unfortunately there is not enough room to mount these fans underneath the intercooler. No doubt they would be much more effective in this setup, however just not possible with the stock cooler.

It would be interesting to see if a single fan mounted directly to the IC (i.e. without a shroud) would achieve a balance between optimal low vehicle speed cooling and optimal higher vehicle speed cooling.
@XploringOz Жыл бұрын

Nath. Has one looked into a water spray system to cool your intercooler charge ? This would hopefully help to reduce the intake temperatures via a switch, that can spray water over the top of an LC200 intercooler thermal/manually switch ! V.
@XploringOz3 жыл бұрын
Hey mate, I definitely agree that a water sprayer would assist (I've tested in my previous 4WD) however 2 things are putting me off this method in this vehicle. Firstly water is finite in overlanding situations and using it to cool the intercooler wouldn't be high up on the list when traversing the desert. Secondly, the 'V' shape of this V8 engine has a tendency to 'catch' water in the centre (under the cooler) and potentially increase or speed up the rusting process.
@vincentpoole75883 жыл бұрын
@@XploringOz Nath. Yeah unless one goes for an aftermarket front mount ? The last thing any LC200 owner needs is the starter motor failing in the middle of a 'Vee', as have heard it's 17 hours book time from Toyota to swap out - yikes ! V.

Great video Nathan thanks. Interesting results. I really would have thought the low speed high load with fans attached would have yielded lower temperatures. I'm wondering if the fan shrouds are blocking some of the airflow from the ducts from the front of the vehicle??? I'm sure that the Toyota Engineers have considered fans and may well have come up with the same conclusion as you. Doesn't make a difference and your data seems to support that.
@XploringOz3 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed the video. I don't believe that the shroud is blocking airflow, I believe that the fans are producing to much CFM (flow rate) which the intercooler isn't designed for. This intercooler appears to be designed for high heat dispersion with minimal air flow. I contacted Toyota regarding their optimal air flow rates, however they were not willing to share that data due to intellectual property rights... I'm happy with the way my vehicle performs and I hope others can make an informed decision based on all evidence out there in regards to whether these fans will suit their vehicle.

Could it be worth trying the fans in reverse, pulling air through the intercooler instead of trying to push it through?
@XploringOz3 жыл бұрын
Potentially this may provide some benefit at very low speeds as pulling air through a cooler is definitely better than pushing however, pulling through the intercooler upwards would significantly effect the characteristics at medium to high speeds. The air flow coming through the front grill and into the intercooler would be fighting against that of the fan airflow. Ideally, you would have puller fans underneath the cooler

I appreciate all your time and effort, maybe you are right with your car. However there are several companies who have spent large amounts of money and time to prove Aftermarket intercoolers and fans help the majority of diesels with top mounts in most situations.And you have one of Australia's most experienced diesel companies totally disagreeing with your conclusions.(kzbin.info/www/bejne/b3S0hKaGobZ_d6c). A 10% increase in power IS noticeable in a car with only 140KW , Not to mention the effect on EGT's. Low range and rock crawling DO require MAX horsepower intermittently to overcome obstacles. Try driving Ngkala rocks on Fraser island and not using ALL you have under the bonnet? Or climbing little red in the glasshouse mountains, you need every KW you can get your hands on to climb that bit of dirt. A TD42 patrol for example will see good gains with a good ic and fan, so will a 1HZ yota, and a Zd30, the list goes on.

There are plenty of companies that do claim to have had positive results with intercooler fans. As you could probably verify, most of these companies are showing results on a dyno, acceleration test one after another. As per my highway video, I showed that these fan can provide slightly lower temps in those type situations. I'm yet to find a company that can show data over longer periods of driving time like I've attempted to demonstrate here. For sure, I agree 10% is noticeable, however I'm saying that it's rare that it will make the difference between conquering an obstacle and getting stuck. If pretty much any other vehicle car get past obstacles, like Ngkala rocks, then a twin turbo V8 diesel should definitely pass ok, with or without fans fitted. I can't comment on the efficiency of other vehicles as they would react significantly differently to the 200 series, but it's possible other vehicles could benefit. Appreciate the comments.

His vids showed lots of soot being blown He mentioned on FB other 'cowboy tuners' use compound supercharged turbo set ups or some crap On a vid (now removed) hes talking about tuning, in the background his apprentice is supposedly undoing a manifold stud, but appears to be levering it with force the wrong way and it snaps. He later laughed it off. Lots of people got on his FB page bagging him. Hes found where they work, then compiled a list of dodgy businesses (as per the post above) Hes apparently set up false FB accounts, 'borrowing' peoples pics of their cars etc to use on his own page (one guy with a GU ute in WA has never dealt with him). Just being generally dodgy. Hes now (via his fake accounts) supposedly posting negative reviews on the businesses listed above🤣🤣🤣 #burymydiesel You talk about youtube experts, but yet here you are being an "expert" in the comments on KZbin lmfao flop.

I have a 2017 lc200 with Diesel engine , theses lc200s , found out with wrong gear oil in sand , will cause temp rise . I tried my lc200 with amsoil 75w90 rather then Toyota 75w85 , both temperature went up . Going back to Toyota 75w85 it ran better . The fans work on towing . But the alternator was working harder , up to 37.8 amps more load . So temp will go up for the loan reasons . Fans do work . Thanks

You've concluded that a gear oil with very similar specs caused temps to rise in sand.......WTF? umm....nothing to do with driving in sand......? Both oils you mention have data that puts them within a poof-tenth of each other for viscosity @ 40 and 100C.

Blowing hot air from inside a hot engine bay isn't going to cool down anything, what were you expecting?
@shanenorwell85803 жыл бұрын
How is it blowing hot air from the engine bay? It should essentially be drawing air through the ducting from behind the grill.
@thebob37123 жыл бұрын
@@shanenorwell8580 do you think the air drawn through the radiator will be cool? Do you think the air around your exhaust is cool? When you pop the bonnet after travelling for a few hours are you hit with cool air or hot air, only way to get cool air is to have a bonnet scoop drawing in air from outside the engine bay. Please tell me where the air going through the intercooler is coming from?, i may be stupid but Im not as stupid as you. Why do guys change to a front mount intercooler from a top mount
@shanenorwell85803 жыл бұрын
@@thebob3712 the 200 series has ducting that bring the air from just behind the grill. There’s rubber seals between this ducting and the cooler. The fans are on the duct side of the intercooler so the only air they have access to is from the duct hence the grill not from the engine bay. There’s no need to be an asshole by the way.
@thebob37123 жыл бұрын
@@shanenorwell8580 not my fault if you are sensitive. Where is the air being drawn from for the fans, is it connected to the ducting, looks like they were just sitting on top of the intercooler, blowing air from inside the engine bay, I may be wrong, please inform me if I am wrong and haven't noticed the ducting connecting them to cold air induction you think there is
@shanenorwell85803 жыл бұрын
@@thebob3712 there’s ducting on every single diesel 200 series that’s part of the bonnet and front grill. It’s not about being sensitive. You told me I was too stupid to work it out when it’s in fact you that doesn’t know how the setup works.
