This is so sad to hear but it all makes sense now. It explains why DL had said what he said to her. Instead of calling him ungrateful when she'd buy him things, she should've picked up all he needed and wanted was her, not her money nor material things. To tell a child "I'm here when you're ready" is a no no in my book. You are the parent, you are his mother, there's no waiting, when you love someone you make every effort TO DO... To be interested, to show you care, to express love, to assure is all a kid wants and longs from his parents.
