When I introduce a friend of mine to Jacob Collier, two days ago, he wrote back yesterday with: How could anyone think he was not a musical genius? His creativity is off the charts scary. I’m reminded of Dylan’s droll and brilliant comment when he first met the Beatles, which expressed his skepticism of the global Beatlemania phenomenon: “So, do you know any new chords?” Philip your intro with an interview was brilliant, most reactors will not take the time to put a new artist in contexts, Bravo to you. cheers Rb

Jacob is one of the few artists who truly gives me hope for the future of music. He understands music at a different level, and has the ability to use this understanding to bend musical structure to his vision. Check out his version of Lionel Ritchie's "All Night Long." Fun and creative.

There are any number of videos of Jacob's that you could start with and be BLOWN AWAY and they would all just be the tip of the iceberg. His talent and ability are quite literally OFF THE CHARTS. The BBC did a documentary feature on Jacob several months ago titled something like "In the Room Where it Happens" that does a great job introducing Jacob and his amazing career so far. Well worth checking out. It talks about how people like Herbie Hancock and Quincy Jones were BLOWN AWAY when they first saw Jacob's "Don't You Worry 'Bout A Thing" video and felt compelled to contact him immediately.

Philip, I truly hope you have the time to go down the Jacob Collier rabbit hole and listen and learn. Not only is he insanely talented musically, he seems to be a very sincere and humble person. I took a train for 8 hours to attend his concert last month in DC. BTW Jacob is pretty much self taught- he talks about being totally into harmony and chords when he was young and just playing around on the piano. He was 17 or 18 when he had his first piano lessons and learned he should be playing with his thumbs and little fingers! I've been a fan of Jacob's for four years now and my appreciation for him to actually just become the music still blows my mind. He throws himself into every project the proverbial 110%. He has several videos that are wonderful and fascinating where he goes into detailed breakdowns of his arranging, recording, producing process and they are a wonder and a delight. I noticed below that at least one other person mentioned his rendition of "Moon River". It is basically entirely acapella and just to set the scale. He had 93 shirt changes to do that one. It is a genuine masterpiece. You've got my sub. I loved the depth and wise sincerity of all your comments. Even if you don't do a reaction. As a music lover please make time to listen to "Moon River". I cry everytime I hear it and I'm not the least bit ashamed to say that. Please react or at the very least please listen to it. He released this when he was 19 and he has somehow improved at every aspect including producing. He's now potentially the best (at least how I measure it) musician, arranger, and producer on the planet. I don't know how true this is but I heard that the music recording software, logic, increased the number of tracks you can have in a project from 256 to 1000 because of him cause he'd get up to like 720 tracks happening at once.

Would love to see how you feel about his arrangement of Moon River (video version). It’s almost 100% a cappella (there are a couple of very quiet “producer noises” on the track), but if you think this took a long time…… well, you’ll see.

I believe he has said that Moon River took (only) a week. I don't know how long this one took, but it would make sense that it took less than that. Less than one would guess without the point of comparison.

He was influenced by the group Take 6… i would even go as far as to say he made the intro as an homage to Take 6’s “Away in a Manger”, where he starts on the relative minor of the melody key, then modulates to the major when the verse starts. This very video, the story goes when Quincy Jones saw it, immediately afterward he assembled his staff and told them, “Find him… and sign him.” QJ flew Jacob to the Montreaux Jazz festival that year so he could meet Herbie Hancock… his first of now 5 albums came out soon thereafter. Welcome to the Jacob Collier rabbit hole; enjoy your stay. Perhaps you could look into another of QJ’s discoveries: a group called Dirty Loops.
