This anti-vehicle mine is meant to strike roofs of the armored vehicles. Where PVM (anti-helicopter mine) is meant to shoot at the helicopters from the below. Those are similar, but they detect the helicopter from over 3 km range (and motor gliders from over 600 meters, drones from 200-300 meters) and use same way acoustic sensor to find a direction, and then IR sensor to find altitude and range. When the target enters to 150 meters range, the mine will start tracking and launches at it. If the target doesn't enter that 150 meter range but fly past 1 km from it, the mine will resume stand-by mode. The PVM can identify the helicopter type by the sound, so it doesn't engage a friendly helicopter.

The mine always knows where it is and where the target is (where the mine isn't). Then it launches itself toward where it isn't, but where the vehicle will be. The mine knows where it was and where it isn't, subtracting both, it knows where it is. The difference between where it is and it thinks it is, is called deviation.

This is the Motiw-3M homing anti-tank element from the 9M55K1 missile from the Bm-30 Smierch launcher, developed in the late 1980s. Only slightly modified, because originally such an element was released in the air and fell on a small parachute, looking for a target to be destroyed, looking for thermal traces on the ground, but when it fell to the ground, it became useless and self-destructing. Here, it was modified so that it works only after it falls to the ground, only then it becomes activated, and for the search for targets, it scans seismic data and when it detects a typical trace of ground vibrations coming from a passing tracked vehicle, then it jumps several meters into the air and attacks the target, same as the original Motiw-3M element, forming a cumulative nucleus in the air. This is not an epoch-making invention, but a modification and modernization of what was invented over thirty years ago.

While the USA was living in a dream of being invincible and indispensable, Russian very, very smart scientists and engineers were quietly developing full spectre of new ultra sophisticated weapons. This smart mine is activated between 50 and 60 meters away from the intended target which means that enemy tank crew has no clue that their end is very nigh. It seems to me that clearing minefield from such mines would be possible only with very large number of infantry moving through dense weed grass and shrub in line 160m shoulder to shoulder looking for the mines. not really, ADS primarily counters shaped charged warheads designed to explode at point blank range by ruining the warhead, 3:12 I am assuming the method is the same as the GBU 100 bomblets where it uses an explosion to shape and propel a slug to pierce the target. What surprise? This is a crude copy of the US M93 Hornet Antitank Mine which has been in the inventory for 25 years already.
@SecurityGuy423 жыл бұрын
@Maximus _ From what I am finding over 15,000 were produced and accepted into inventory by the US military. In a test conducted in 1998 (which was not the only test) 6 mines were employed against a passing T-72 at Yuma Proving Grounds, AZ. Three did not acquire the target and did not fire. Three did, fired the projectile, and all 3 hit the target. Of those hits 1 was considered catastrophic. This was below expectations which resulted in upgrades to the mines to get them to expectations. Either way they were accepted into inventory and real numbers in inventory will only be found out during the next report to congress on the landmine stockpile in depots. Also, the testing and deployment is still over 20 years before Russia finally made a crude cheap copy.

@Maximus _ If you are talking the OLD Dragon ATGM, yes. It really only came about because of the AT-3 Sagger being deployed by Egypt and captured by the Israelis and sent to the USA for evaluation.

Built to old Soviet durability standards, stamped out of recycled truck frames and hand forged from the finest rebar available at the time of manufacture. I don't doubt the thing will work, but my goodness it looks very clunky. I visited a space museum in the old USSR and all their rocket engines and capsules looked like they were made with a welder and a grinder. The Soyuz-Apollo capsules on display provided a stark contrast between the US and Soviet equipment.

“The top attack system is envisioned to consist of the Common Anti-Vehicle Munition (CAVM) top attack munition, the top attack dispenser launcher module (DLM), the Remote Control Station (RCS), and an obstacle planning capability. The CAVM top attack munition shall have improved lethality over previous generations of top attack munitions (M93 Hornet and XM204). Once emplaced in a tactical obstacle, the system shall be capable of operating in a standby mode for up to six months with the ability to transition to a target engagement mode for 30 days.” And this is just a copy of that old M93 Hornet mine...
