It's nice to see someone from another country that actually gets British food. All your videos in the UK have been top-notch so far. Hating on British cuisine is a perfect example of bad stereotypes and propaganda from as far back as wartime when food was obviously going to be subpar because we were working with limited ingredients and heavy rationing. The reason everyone is stood outside the pub is because you can’t smoke in the pub/there’s always more people than seats. If you try going to different pubs until you find a seat, you’ll never find one. Also yes everyone goes to the pub after work, especially in central London. People will often finish at 5/6 and head to the pub for 1-2 hours. It’s both for social purposes and because there’s a strong bonding culture especially in offices around the pub. Ie: people will tell you things you wouldn’t normally learn about work, gossip or work related, because you went to the pub. People often say 1 late night at the pub makes you closer to someone than 6 months of working with them in the office. Glad you’re enjoying your time Ben. A true London experience.

You definitely need to try a good Steak Pie (even Steak and Ale Pie), another very traditional dish, good with mashed or roast potatoes and some side veggies. I'd also love to see you try a good Haggis, Neeps and Tatties (Haggis, Turnip and Mashed Potatoes) being from Scotland, maybe even with a good whisky on the side 😂 If you'd made it up to Scotland you could've tried some good smoked kipper from Arbroath (Auld Smokies) or some other regional dishes too. Absolutely nothing wrong with the way you eat too, you savour it, you enjoy it, nothing wrong with that at all. I don't even mind a metal fork, easier for you and more "realistic". To be honest, you have already kind of had all the ingredients of Toad in the Hole, cos you've already had a Yorkshire Pudding and sausages, the pastry part of Toad in the Hole is basically just like Yorkshire Pudding. i.e. a baked batter.

The English loves the outside when it is not raining, and when it is day time, they would just stand outside and drink with their friends (or solo). Sometimes it can be because it would be illegal to smoke inside so they have to stand outside to smoke, and their friends stand there with them. As for not eating dinner in the pub at 5pm, it depends on the pub, some pubs are not for food and some are more for drinking, and it also depends on the day. Go to most pubs on a sunday afternoon then you are more inclined to find food eating crowd vs Monday night.

The pubs, especially in Shoreditch or central areas where a lot of corporations are head-quartered, have a big social culture. Going to the pub a bit earlier, especially on a Thursday or Friday for colleague bonding is highly encouraged. I work for an advertising company that's based in Soho, and every Thursday the company puts on a free drinks and a massive charcuterie and snack spread at 5pm and there's a local we frequent once the food is gone - even though we technically finish at 6. Some naughty ones leave earlier. It might have been me at the pub 😂😂😂

Central London has a huge drinking culture especially in Shoreditch and near the "City of London" which is different to "London". It's down to lots of factors: - nobody drives to work - Thursday is the new Friday "The pre-kend" and a lot of people finish work early on a Friday. Particularly in Shoreditch. - Commuters find it easier sometimes to wait for the train/tube rush hours to calm down before heading home. - The majority of the workforce is young people who have no reason to head home to a family etc. But in general, meeting with friends and colleagues in pubs and socialising is something we all enjoy and see as a good thing.

Watching this series, I'm thinking you need to move here mate. Love you you vibe with these British bests. Our cuisine gets shat on by so many. Brown dinners FTW!

Bangers and mash so good, simple but hits the spot every time. Good with some bread too. You need to try mint sauce with a roast dinner

Have some fresh peas or green beans and LASHINGS of Heinz Tomato Ketchup with your bangers and mash, Ben… you’ll be in heaven! There really isn’t anything more comforting for these cold and rainy autumn nights. ☔️

P.S: Your sadness at the end of the video - about Cumberland sausages (😂) and not wanting to go home - is tugging at my heartstrings. We’ve loved having you here. x

HP brown is better than red with bangers and mash and gravy as it adds the peppery zing to it

the pubs are basically just filled with people that have had a long, hard day/week at work and they're just out for a few pints with the boys and so they can be a bit rough. additionally no, your not supposed to go to a pub for food under most circumstances but you almost always have food if your there to drink and it is for that reason that the seating is mostly freed up because people aren't there to eat but rather have a good time and chill out with a few pints. I get that pub culture can seem confusing but a good way to understand it is to imagine that everyone there is fed up with work and wants to enjoy themselves and you can do whatever you want as long as you don't disturb them (of course unless they're the friendly sort) ...... the most important part is your there for you so don't worry about what everyone else is doing. love the videos

Shepherds Pie comes from all across UK not just from Ireland. In fact the oldest surviving recipe is from Scotland.

I love how much you love British food.
@CagedPaps11 ай бұрын
If you like these, there's a lot of regional dishes around the UK that are, essentially meat and potatoes. Couple mash ones from Scotland - stovies (basically crushed / mashed potato with beef and a bit of veg, eaten with oat cakes), and mince and tatties. So almost like a deconstructed cottage pie.
@hardywatkins773710 ай бұрын
Deconstructed cottage pie lol. Actually we do eat mince and potatos in England also ... not that common anymore though but when i was a kid it was common, and a staple of school dinners.

Oh mate, you should have some Hendersons relish with that. In Yorkshire you can't eat either of those without it. Such comfort food. We do put cheese on a cottage pie too and bake it. Yup pubs are always packed. We love a drink 😂xx

Dude, you gotta eat the peas on the same fork of Shepherds Pie. Most British dishes are about flavour combo's. That's why the Full English rules, the combinations are endless.

Yes! Shepherds pie with cheesy top and peas is a staple dinner in our house, bangers and mash we usually have peas or carrots but onion gravy is a must . Next time get some of that mustard out to go with the sausages and some mint sauce with the shepherds pie . So nice to see you enjoying classic British food !
@williamprice467311 ай бұрын
HP sauce brings sausage and mash up a level. It's also brilliant with Sheperds pie. In moderation mind. Enjoy
