The estimates for a trip to Mars are all predicated upon the vehicle leaving earth with it's supply of fuel, crew and supplies using a single ship like the Apollo moon missions. This is a stupid idea! Considering the advances in robotics, it is quite possible to pre-position the landing module, supplies and fuel in orbit around Mars. It's also possible to assemble the vehicle in orbit around earth so that it can be supplied with plenty of fuel to shorten the journey. This will require many multiple launches but will greatly increase the chances of success compared to a single launch mission. A single launch mission is a death sentence for the crew because it is not possible to take off with enough fuel and supplies to get there and back.
