Thank you, Library Hunter, for taking time to interview me at Huntington Beach Public LIbrary! If book banning and privatization can happen here in coastal California to a beloved and well-run public library with a 100+ year history, it can happen anywhere. Book banning and privatization only make public libraries weaker. We must protect these beacons of democracy from government overreach.

It’s my understanding that sexually explicit books as well as the influence of alternate lifestyles are the concern. It doesn’t seem like a ban on books, but a concern for the young and impressionable minds of children. Thus the reason to relocate these types of books. What’s wrong about that?

When I’m introduced to a new idea or come across something I don’t yet understand or hear conflicting opinions on a subject, it’s nice to go to a library to learn a little more from people who have spent a lot of time and care around these ideas. Young adults nowadays - just talking with classmates at school, hearing the news, using the internet - they’re going to hear bits and fragments of new ideas all over the place. The library most likely won’t be introducing these ideas to young adults, but it could be a place to help them make sense of new and unfamiliar things.

It's a book BAN when a 21-member review board of political appointees (with no background in library science) has absolute decision-making authority to determine which library books can be acquired and curated for those 17 and under. From HB Ordinance 4318: G. All decisions by the Board are final and non-appealable. This is unprecedented for a public library and is unlawful.

Library Hunter - thanks for raising this serious issue in HB. Some folks have asked questions on the viedo which show that they are unaware of the HUNDREDS of people who have gone to many council meetings and asked similiar and more questions. There are either no answers or answers by one or two council members that are brief, defensive and speak to MAGA values with little recognition or concerns for the over 500 residents that spoke against it. There was no study, no harm claimed, no previous problems, however the current mayor who has pursued this issue in many avenues long before she was on the HB council is the one who brought this forward. This has been her issue, similiar to the Moms for Liberty movement for many years. They brought huge photo's of pictures they claimed were in books in our library, and many of the books were not even in our libray. Similiar to the same photo's brought forward at all Mom's for Liberty library takeover's across the country especially in the southern USA states. She stated at meetings that the children's section was full of pornography. Completely untrue. Books on biological processes such as passing gas, or pooping and/or having menstrual periods are not books of a sexual natue. Books displaying a culture or religious or personal perspective different than the traditional judeo-chirstian perspective are not porn just because the book differ's from one's personal views. It is book banning when new books that do not meet the political appointees criteria are not allowed to be in the library. Simple: That book is banned from this library. That is what is happening. Tax payers, charitatable sources and other gifted money make up the funds to support our libraries. This is not a church library - it is a publc library, and should be stocked with books that reflect the wide range of multi -cultural, religious and personal perspectives whose money goes into support our library, and children's book belong in the children's section, not in a "special" section. Thank you for the viedo and the imporatant information shared by Ms. Daus.

Stop saying “banning”. It’s so inaccurate! No one is banning any books, they are just being moved to the adult section. They’re still their for your viewing pleasure. They’re just being moved so underage children don’t see what their parents don’t want them to. Just like if a parent is ok with it, they can check out the book for their child. I’m not for banning ANY literature but I am for protecting a child’s innocence. I have read gender queer & it’s quite disturbing! Books on pooping & menstruation should not be moved to the adult section, I agree that’s ridiculous. But this stuff all needs to be worked out.

Southern California is going through some tough changes. Huntington Beach, Coasta Mesa, and Laguna Beach is the most ridiculously conservative area in the Orange County. Because they are so afraid of it being like Los Angeles County, which is ridiculously gone the other way. In Long Beach, LA County, they build a multi billion dollar library with a namesake of Billie Jean King, just shuts down this new main library downtown LBC because they cannot control the homeless issue. The library cannot stop homeless people from coming in the facilities to use it. Even though they are all over the lobby sleeping in reading chairs soiling them and the carpets with a horrible stench. Homeless in SoCal are difficult, they want to live as homeless so they can abuse hard drugs and alcohol with impunity. To get into a transition program for housing, they have to clean up and get sober. Most of them don’t want to get housing with security and cops dictating their substance abuse. Why can’t California just be in the middle of the political spectrum.

This is disappointing. This is truly a one-sided look at an issue that merely stokes emotions in an attempt to try to get folks on their side. This is a long video and frankly I wouldn’t be interested at all except for the fact that I live in HB, enjoy the library (it’s great!), and thought it’d be interesting to see what all the hullabaloo was about. So I watched the very first part of the video and am basing the following opinion on that - I think that’s all most people will watch unless they’re more interested or involved in the issue. If my thoughts or deficiencies in my statements of this video are addressed later on, please feel free to point that out. But, from my short look I found it intellectually offensive. I’m not even talking whether their stance (“banning” books is bad!) is appropriate or not. The interview/discussion doesn’t dive into any opposing reasons as to why this so-called “ban” has been instituted by the city and what benefits or so-called benefits exist - for either side of the argument. If they don’t mention opposing arguments from the appropriate folks that made this happen, it implies their position falls apart under the light of scrutiny. Again, to be fair, I didn’t watch the video to the end, but if only one position is stated up front - with not mention that an opposing position will be heard, the issue is lost (or won, depending on one’s goals/perspective). It reminds me of sound bites from the political parties leading up to an election… “We don’t care what’s right, the other side is bad, we’re good, and that’s all you need to know”. Let’s say someone wanted to look at this topic a bit more objectively. One might consider the following: • Why call it a “book ban”? Such language evokes images of early 20th century book burning and is incendiary (pun intended)! This will get people on our side! Yeah! This isn’t objective and is intellectually offensive (but maybe it works). From what I saw,: 1) it doesn’t appear to ban any books - these books are still in the adult section; and 2) perhaps it’s a ban of sorts for children - but we ban many other things from children - alcohol, driving, voting, guns, etc. that have both children and societal benefits. Although most people are impressionable to some extent, wouldn’t we agree that children are VERY impressionable and should be protected from certain things (I presume this is the reason for the topic discussed - although I didn’t hear that very basic premise in the video). So, the statement that this is a “ban” is disingenuous at minimum and as previously stated, primarily focused on garnering sympathy and support from the viewer. • Why not interview one of the city council members, or all of the city council members that voted for this new ordinance (?) and dig into why they felt the need to do this. Why not ask questions (of both the pro and con parties - as appropriate) such as: • Why are we removing books from the children’s section and putting them in the adults section? • Why are we doing this now, what was the real goal of this? How long has this been under consideration? • What are the benefits and for whom? • How much is this costing the tax payers? • Have you considered any negatives to doing this? • How was the criteria of the books in question determined? • What was the purpose of this separate, non-elected, 21-member review board to determine what books were not eligible for access by children? What were those benefits, negatives? Did you consider alternatives? • Do you have minutes of the meetings where this was discussed? If so, can we see them? Is there a summary available? Many more questions could be asked as there are but a few of the most obvious ones that could be asked of those that made this happen. Early in the video, because this would show a more balanced discussion, why not give the stated reason for instituting the ordinance, and the counter to that reason? Also, Carol Daus indicates that it’s inappropriate for folks without backgrounds in library science to make decisions as to what is appropriate for children to read/view. That’s not really an argument. That’s perhaps a good question for the council members - how were the qualifications of the 21-member committee determined, and why? The video is disappointing due to its obvious bias. If it does give counterpoints to the arguments late in the video, it also reflects that same bias as many folks wouldn’t get to them.
