Public Safety Diving Discussion
Since 2004 I have served my local communities as a Public Servant, including as a Deputy Sheriff, Police Officer, Medic, EMT, and Firefighter. During this time I have also been a Public Safety Diver and Instructor, and an Under Water Criminal Investigator and Instructor. This video is simply to give you a little bit more information about what we do as PSD's and UCI's and to say Thank You to all those that serve.

Thanks for bringing this topic to your platform. Personally I began my dive training with the sole purpose to become a psd and one fact that cannot be overlooked is that mastery of your basic skill set is the foundation. We had a close call with a seasoned psd during my UCI class which could be directly attached to a basic open water skill. So frequently in public safety work we concentrate on the advanced skills only to be bitten by the basics. Something to think about. Stay safe.

Brian: Thanks for using your platform to put into words what a lot of us PSD want to say but don't have the words or the method. I especially like when you emphasized this is not fun. there is no worse feeling than coming off of the water and having to tell family members that we have not made contact with their loved one or when you do find them the look of all hope being lost. Thanks for all your dedication to our craft and keep posting. Steve Deaton - Lead Diver West Tennessee Dive Rescue and Recovery

Could you make a list of gear and pricing for a decent public safety diving set sir? I am trying to do research and educate myself before training in the next couple of months to get on my department's dive team. Thank you so much for all you do brother.

Hello ridaz18192002, thank you for being a subscriber. One of the best types of training a Public Safety Diver can go through, is simply go diving. More time he or she has underwater, the more comfortable they will be. Here in our area, I see teams only dive during training exercises. The water-men-ship skills are lacking. Learning the basics to search and recovery is something that goes by the wayside, if a diver does not practice these skills over and over and over. Most training agencies today have some type of Public Safety Diver program. This is a good base line to get your team started in. Once they have the core courses, the team should have a training day at least once a month, and each member should be mature enough to dive at least once a week to keep their skills up to date. Some great in house skills you team can practice is blindfolded gear assembly and disassembly. Blind search patters on land, and even a 5 minute gear donning drill. In the water, practice search patterns blindfolded. Run through entanglement skills. Practice line signaling. All these will make you team more prepared for the unfortunate call outs.

Hello Gimp Gunfighter, and thank you for your service as a Firefighter. In regards to getting started in the Public Safety Diver Program, depending on which agency you decide to learn from, the pre-requisites can be found in the training standards directly from the respected agency. Check with your local diver training facility (dive shop) and see if they offer a Public Safety Diver Program, then verify with them what the standards are, that must be met to reach that goal. Once you have the certification, finding a team to operate on can be difficult, especially if there is not already an established team in your area. Most of the time, a Fireman's / Officer's department, if they have a team, will send their member off for the training or do it in house, and then they are typically allowed to try out for the team. In my case, my local Fire Department and Sheriff's Office both have a team. Even if there isn't a team locally for you to join, you can still take the training and earn a certification in Public Safety Diving. Most agencies will require pre-requisite courses, such as Open Water, Advanced, Rescue, CPR, AED, First Aid, O2 Provider, (an EMT or Paramedic certification will usually cover the CPR AED First Aid and O2 Provider certifications), and usually will strongly encourage certifications in Night, Navigation, Search & Recovery, Full Face Mask, and Dry Suit. Though these may not be required, they will most definitely help you out along the way. If you have any other questions, let me know, and I will see what I can do getting you started in a program near you. Take care.

LakeHickoryScuba we have a team in the town next to mine that's fire department based. The problem is I live in a small town in Maine so finding out info on the team or who even to call has been a pain I've seen some stuff for a company called Northeast Public Safety Divers on Facebook would they be some people I'd want to e-mail or call?

Probably wouldn't hurt to reach out to them. Also check out Team Lifeguard Systems out of Shokan, NY. They may have some resources in or area, in regards to training, and may even be able to give you some help finding a team to serve on.

could I use a FFM in my basic scuba class to fulfill my ERDI FFM requirement ?

It is ultimately up to the instructor you will be taking the course from. For what it is worth, I have several students every year complete their open water course while using a Full Face Mask. As long as the students are able to complete every skill listed in standards, then they earn their certification. I even go as far as issuing them their Full Face Mask certification at the same time.
