I love the beautiful Inns of Court. It was interesting to see Dr. Johnson’s Dictionary and his ‘ Local’. I always heard one could have a good pub crawl along Fleet Street! Thank goodness for the preservation of ‘old’ London.

Allegedly the freehold of the Punch Tavern is owned by Samuel Smiths and when the pub changed hands they took part of it over and opened the Crown and Sugarloaf. I used to like visiting the Punch on a Saturday evening,grabbing a Sunday express from across the road and attempting to finish the general knowledge crossword a day early (pre mobile phones and Internet!)

I was in the Punch pub the first time I was in London in November of 1974. There were men in bowler hats almost everywhere. I've been in almost all of the pubs in this general area when on vacation in the last few years.

Still think of Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese from time to time. I happened to stop by on a fairly cold, cozy night.

Was in London a couple of months ago. One interesting pub not far from where I was staying was was the Blackfriar. The Temple Church was built by the Templars in the 12th century and was their London HQ. It is an interesting historical site.

Thanks Andrew, very kind of you to say so! I made this video before I had properly started the Tweedy Pubs channel and back then I hadn't really figured out the format etc. So this wasn't as focused as the more recent videos - some very long sections where I'm not even in a pub! Glad to hear you found it interesting regardless.

Walking through the legal district once I wondered what lay behind all those windows. There's definitely a vibe there.

Thankyou Tweedy for another entertaining and nicely presented video. There are some surprisingly good pubs around the lovely Inns of Court. In addition to your excellent selection, there is also The Devereaux, The Old Bank of England building in Fleet Street (magnificent interior), The Edgar Wallace and also a very good subterranean micro brewery in Essex Street which opened during in the last decade. 'He who is tired of London pubs is tired of life' as Dr J would have said.

it might not be a pub, but a drink at the Fountain Park Bar in the "gardens" there in summer looks to be quite relaxing - I like that you show all the M-F 9-5 "shortcuts" that are available - another engaging video - thank you!

Thank you! This is a bit of an old video, there's certainly a few things I would have done differently if I were remaking it now, but I'm glad you enjoyed it regardless... Yes I do think that outdoor bar in Middle Temple is really interesting. Always a very short lived thing - just open for a few weeks in early summer each year. I believe it has already closed for the year now!

I'm not sure if it would still be the case, but back in the 60s the best place to watch the Lord Mayor's procession would be from Temple Gardens. As you indicate, lots of the legal district is almost hidden in plain sight, and you could watch the procession go past on the Embankment completely unemcumbered by any of the crowds lining the street itself.

KZbin did a good job of putting this in my queue today. On my 14th London visit on September 8 I finally walked through the Inns of Court on the way to The Seven Stars. Really cool place but I keep waiting for someone to run me out of there. :-) Also, as one of the tourist clogging up The Cheese (I don’t apologize) on the 5th there were two gentlemen doing about an hour show as Dr Johnson and Boswell in Dr Johnson’s room. They did a really good job.

Thanks Jeff! It's nice on those (rare) occasions when KZbin actually finds a subject matter you're interested in, isn't it? I have a similar feeling when walking around the grounds of the Inns of Court that I'm going to be asked to leave at any moment! I wish I had known about the Johnson / Boswell performance in YOCC, that sounds great!

Also, that massive building site next to the Harrow pub once also contained the Hack and Hop pub, which sadly is another classic old pub/ building which survived the war but not the greedy developers and the corrupt planners taking their back handers.😢

The old curiosity ship doesn't look right there. Too modern. Been in Cheshire cheese, liked it, punch tavern was OK but like u had great expectations of the Old Bell and inside was disappointing. Interesting for me Fleet St being an ex printer, cheers😊

I love your channel, although I come from Birmingham I have been to many of the pubs you have featured in London. I love London. I have to say however I was disappointed to hear you say in another upload that you don't like sport. That is like saying you don't like literature. Not one sport?
@TweedyPubs
@TweedyPubs 8 ай бұрын
I agree it does sound a bit blinkered when you put it like that! I just can't think of a single sport I would happily sit down and watch (or take part in). What can I say, we all have these odd blind spots don't we? Things everyone else seems to be into but we individually just don't get. I've met people who say they don't like pubs!

Saying you don’t like sport is nothing like not liking literature Tottaly different. I cant stand sport either. Nether watched a game of football or rugby or any other boring sport with silly grown men kicking a bit of leather around. Seems like a real waste of time and energy. But I love reading I have read many hundreds of books. But not one one sport.

Is this where ''Rumpole of the Bailey'' would find a wine bar when his alcohol level had hit a critical low... Or a pub for a guinness and a steak and kidney pud... Or a place with loud video games and stale cheese sandwiches... with even worse wine???

Yes I only recently figured out what the problem there is (as you may have noticed I'm still very much an amateur at all of this!). I use a GoPro for most of the outdoor shots, which defaults to 30 frames per second / 60hz, and that clashes with UK electrics / lighting (50hz). There is an option to adjust that, but I'm a bit reticent to change it because my phone (which I use for indoor shots) can only film in 30 FPS, and I get the sense video editing starts to get problematic when you have media with two different frame rates. I still need to find a better solution for this!
