This was a Sydney Opera production with David Hobson and Cheryl Barker. The director, Baz Luhrmann, changed the setting to post-WWII, and it kind of works. Hobson's tenor is higher than most and doesn't appeal to everyone, but he can hit any high note beautifully. To hear more of him, he was the lead in Orphee et Euridice the following year in a role written for a countertenor, and he did it well - and shirtless after the first act! The DVDs for both Boheme and Orphee are available online.

This rather extraordinary version of Boheme was produced by Baz Luhrmann for Opera Australia around 1990, and there is a complete video available dated 1993. The cast was was all 30 or younger and visually appealing. David Hobson starred the following year in a unique production of Orpheus and Euridice (shirtless in Acts III and IV, if that makes any difference to you), and now he makes the rounds of smaller venues all over Australia.

David Hobson is fantastic! He looks perfectly handsome and his voice is brilliant. I can hardly believe why he has not been so popular around the world. I want this DVD!

I think this production is at least 30 years old, I remember watching it on PBS with my Aunt and she was translating the libretto for me, when I was just a teenager. None the less beautiful

First as a side point i just want to say to all those who think that Phantom of the Opera is actual opera: THIS is real opera, Poto isn't even close (no offense intended). Then I want to say that I love and worship the show Rent, I have both the 2005 movie and the 2008 live performance. But mostly I want to say that this is pure magic and never fails to send my spirits to the heavens and that I am extremely proud to be Australia now.

Luke "Luck E" Tieppe - I can assure you this is DH singing - and it's beautiful. This is 22 years old now - DH would have only been in his late 20s.

baz lurhmann directed it. and it's set in the 1950's so the price of type writers would have dropped considerably compared to the 1830's when it was originally set

What on Earth? Yes great voice but listen to Bocelli singing this and then Hobson singing this, back to back. The voice is the same? Closing my eyes and listening to Hobson singing here, I could have sworn it was Bocelli's voice. Looks like Hobson is lip syncing also. So what is going on?

David must find out his own voice, he lost the way of personality, he doesn't imit anybody but engola cause it's possible he wants to have a more spinto sound in his register but it's certienlly unneccesary, he has a beautifull liric voice and he need discover his own way. he's bieautifull in sound but he have to improve his italian that's so poor, more complicated if he continues singing without paying attention to the pronounciation. an iltalian opera singer ought to have the italian domined better than his own language.
