Growing up in the UK in the 80's, a 10 speed Puch was my dream bike. Still gets the juices flowing to see one restored and being ridden.

My first roadbike and my first bike restoration was my 1985 puch odyssey road bike. Metallic red with good detail and decals. Upgraded it with biopace rings, sugino crankset and new pedals, suntour shift gear and dia compe brakes. Suntour 700c wheels and new kenda gumwall tires. Polished the original paint and rebuilt the while thing ground up. Was my dad bike forever and was given to me when my mountain bike was stolen. Now I'm a roadie because of this little puch. Thanks for restoring this one!!! Now to build my Paletti super prestige track bike now

I bought a Puch Mistral frameset new in 1990. I still have it. It has Columbus SLX tubes, forks & stays. I built it up with a Campagnolo Original Chorus Groupset and 32 spoke Mavic MA40 wheels built with DT spokes. The bars and stem are Cinelli and the saddle is a Rolls. The bike is still beautiful and still rides like a dream.

There were a number of models in the Mistral range, from your range-topper to more modest models, like the Mistral Leader, which were originally Reynolds 501 frames, but moved to Columbus Formula 2, which was a tubeset made for Bianchi, who also built them. I had one of these for a while - heavy, but well-made with chromed dropouts nice lugs.

Ooh, that's another good one! Last christmas, i bought one to my girlfriend, but in petrol color (green-blue metal) to match her eyes. She's a Bianchi fan, but the small size via nirone geometry was too sporty for her, sold it, bougth a very much fitting Trek Lexa, but still dreaming about the Celeste legend. Then i got this beauty... I acted like i buy it for myself, she didn't know a bit about Puch history (some KTM Stradale models made by Bianchi too, if you're interested, or these Puch Mistrals were made by Colombus SLX tubesets too, that's nowhere near entry level), so imagine the level of shock when i started to talk about the bike... Long stroy short, she finally owns a Bianchi and absolutely loves it. Keep up the great work you do! Cheers, Drew

Bikes live forever! Nice build! The first real road bike I had was a Puch Luzern, bought in '82, I think. It was black, Reynolds 531, machine brazed lugs, had Shimano 600EX derailleurs, crank, BB, brakes, seat post, hubs, 36 spoked sloppily machine built aluminum rims. "Fast touring" WB was 102 cm, chain stays 43 cm, 73/74 angles and it was one size too big. It rode flippy or comfortable, depending on how hard you rode, but always went straight ahead. I rode it 20,000 miles around the DC/MD/VA, area, including two trips to the Delaware seashore, 125 miles away, fully loaded with camping gear, and stayed a week out on beautiful planet earth, falling asleep under the stars, and the gently rolling surf. I had a child-like sense of freedom, 125 miles from home with everything I needed, without a car or the attached anxiety and expense I marveled, stirring ramen, chicken, and carrot soup heating up on the Whisperlite stove. If this two wheeled machine, lighter than a wheel chair, could get me, under my own power, loaded with 80 pounds of luggage, 125 miles down the road, it could get me anywhere. The Puch was my first teacher. It taught me what riding was all about. I fell so much in love, I upgraded to Campy Super Record components, at the time legendarily reliable, light weight, and easy to work on, catching sales bike Nashbar always had going, and ended up unsatisfied with the slightly flippy Puch frame. Installed a nice set of wheels from Colorado Cyclist, hand trued Ambrosio Extra Elite clincher rims, Campy hubs. Well, the wheels were nice and responsive, but they didn't stiffen the frame. So I slowly saved up extra $20. bills for a year and bought another bike, full Campy, Cinelli bars and stem, Turbo saddle, the saddle Bernard Hinault was riding, Columbus SL, SLX seat tube, nicely chromed dropouts and drive side chain stay, flat chromed fork crown, 36 spoked Mavic tubular rims, and found out what "good" meant. Gita had just started importing DeRosa frames, then making waves as the last bikes Eddy rode, and the ones his brand later imitated. Well, if Eddy ended his career on DeRosas, that's the one I want! Bright blue, DeRosa's favorite color! Lowest gear being 42-21, it had to be ridden hard. The harder I rode it, the better it performed. Just amazing. It was so wonderful, I stripped the Campy components off the Puch Luzern, and saved them for the next purchase, a commuter frame with fender eyelets. The DeRosa was way too pretty to tie up to light posts downtown, so I squandered another 650 bucks on a custom frame. Fred Kelley was making them out of a garage/office space out in Rockville, MD. I'll never forget the trip home on the Metro. Holding the frame, fork attached, in my lap, I was a revolutionary doing my part, a picture of virtue! So the Campy components went on a lugged SLX frame with heavied up SPX chain stays, and a semi sloping fork crown, 73 degree parallel angles. It's still the commuter, ridden everywhere rain or shine, and still looks pretty detailed up. Well, I reassembled the original Shimano components on the trusty Luzern, and passed it on to a college student. He rode it for a few years and then we lost contact. I think it's only weakness was inadequate brazing compound in the machine brazed lugs. This no doubt isn't a problem with your Mistral. The Luzern cost slightly less than $500. That Mistral looks like it was probably twice as expensive, more likely hand brazed. Amazing we could ride what the pros rode for $1500. Now ya gotta spend over $10,000! And you can't build perfect wheels anymore with a spoke wrench and centering gauge, goodbye tight, stiff threaded BBs, and bikes that keep going and going.

Your videos inspired me to totally restore my Falcon team banana replica. I owned it from new and used it for many years until I got a top spec Peugeot. I then gave the banana away . Two years back I started to look on eBay for a team banana to restore. One day the guy I gave my original banana too came into my place of work. To my amazement he still owned it. I purchased it back from him and have spent the last two years restoring it to as new condition. Used it a few times now and it's not much slower then my modern carbon bike I daily use now. Thank you for posting amazing videos and please keep them coming.

You're very lucky indeed; my Dad gave his old gold Peugeot away 20 years ago (long before I got into cycling) and I know for a fact I'll never see it again, no matter how hard I yearn for it (and the memories that went along with it). Glad to hear you're restoring yours - I bet you'll not be giving it away in a hurry any time soon!

C345 OFR Sad to hear your Peugeot was given away. If you can remember the model name it may be worth a look on the French eBay as there are many for sale. I had two, one was basic and I upgraded it to a higher spec one after a couple of years. The second one was beautiful and had chrome sections at the bottom of the forks and rear dropouts. The cables ran inside the frame and if memory serves me correctly it ran on 15mm wide tyres. I used it until I got my first carbon road bike. My Peugeot went to my brother who still has it now. As for the team banana I have used it for work many times and it receives a lot of looks from passers by. In October I will go to the Philippines and the banana will be displayed in the local bike shop.

BikeIt UK you should 100% restore a banana. They cost little on eBay. The only part I could not find so had to make do with the original is the bar tape. (Fades from yellow to white). If you find one with steel wheels they sound beautiful when you brake as the sides of the rims are dimpled. It was the Raleigh banana you restored which finally got me to hit the workshop and crack on. Keep the videos coming, they are very interesting and motivating. I have friends in the USA and the Philippines that enjoy your videos.

Hi Andy I am new to the Channel but am hooked. Your infectious enthusiasm know no bounds. Love it. You don't seem to be able to make your mind up on which end to start wrapping the handlebar tape. I start at the bar ends to give the tape an overlap which cannot be damaged from downward pressure of hands. And you need to come and rummage through my massive spares stock to help with parts for your videos. I'm NE London if you are passing. Wheelywonderful.

Thanks David for the words of support. regarding the handlebar tape I have done a dedicated video on this. In the 1980's bar tape was wrapped from the top down so on some restorations depending on the bar tape used I stay to the tradition, however I know of the benifit of wrapping from the bottom up. I live Manchester way so Ill bare the offer in mind if I am passing. Thanks again and all the best Andy

My father bought me my first grown up road bike around 1971 which was a Puch Clubleader. The bike weighed a ton and was definitely not light weight. It had simplex 10 speed gears with a five speed rear block. The chainset ( steel ) had cotter pins and the brakes were Weinman centre pulls. This was rather an upgrade from my child's Raleigh Rocket bicycle with rod brakes lol.

You inspired me to buy and restore an old ciöcc road bike. It needed minimal work: new chain, new 105 5500 deraileur (previous owner had a 7 speed mtb one on it), and 105 5500 cranks (ones on it were sora and the octalink splines were worn out so I did some digging and found matching crankset for the rest of the groupset minus the brakes and shift levers which are both ultegra. My parents have been telling at me the entire way "why are you spending so much on a piece of (censored)" it was less than 100 so far that I've spent not including the bike. And it is about to be so worth it. Now I have to just have to get some rust remover and matching enamel paint. Even with her rust and chips, she is a beauty

I had a Bianchi Rekord 905 that had the same ”made in italy” sticker around the bottom bracket area. It was made of oria tubing, the early models used columbus cromor also. I think it was a entry level road bike, not the lightest but still a nice bike. The lugs of this puch also look’s very similar, so could indeed be a ”bianchi”. One thing on the one I had was the seat tube diameter was something odd, like 28mm. Great video!

Andy, great video as always. Tend to do the same thing over here in the states, though I’m wondering if I need to get you a Boston Red Sox hat! One question for you...after you take the bikes apart...how do you know how much to torque the old bolts to make sure everything is up to snuff to make these vintage rides safe? It always something I try to figure out depending on the mfr...and wonder how you do it? Thanks again, awesome transformation!

Hi and thanks for the comment, I was just that I had replied to you as I remember telling you the story of how I came to have the blue cap. If not I simply found it once on a night out and my youngest son made an emoji of me which I liked and in turn the image logo just became part of the image. Funny how things come about, I do not follow any team but know how strongly fans can be about the opposition. Regarding torque these bikes take a lot more than your new carbon rides. Vintage Bottom brackets the locking rings are as tight as I can, but if you tighten the cup to much the spindle will not move, same as the headset. I hope this makes sense. All the best and thanks for your comment and support Andy

Great work and nice video Andy I see when you were installing the new bottom bracket that there seemed to be some paint chips around the bottom bracket and near the place on the rear chainstay where you installed the silver sticker. Hello my friend, you have a fine eye to detail. Yes I do and should of matched up the purple on this build. I am now currently on vacation at the moment so the build was rushed slightly to get the video uploaded and live. Otherwise it would of been at least another 3 weeks. Yeah , great frame.and as previously pointed out, its a "Mistral" and should be Columbus SLX tubing, not particularly light, but the power transfer is excellent due to its stiffness, i used mine for time trialing as a younger bloke, it is a self build from new using all Shimano 600 & Ultegra components apart from Campagnolo Chorus hubs, and wholber TX profile rims. They were made in Italy by Bianchi and should have either Camagnolo or Gippieme Chromed forged dropouts. Mine has Gippieme. the only problem i had during the self build , was getting the front mech to align properly with the chain on the braze on hanger, so i machined my own removable (so non frame affecting) "Shimano Adapter" to get perfect alignment. Apparently you dont have such a problem with a Campagnolo front deraillieur. Its a class act and sold for a very reasonable price (for the frame).

In the mid eighties when I was about 8 I received a Puch Clipper 5spd road bike as a Christmas present. It had steel wheels, full length steel mudguards and steel handlebars. As a result it was a bit of a heavyweight! My mates all had 10 or 12spd lightweight Peugeots with alloy wheels and cool looking short mudguards although these were pretty useless in the wet! My Puch was purchased new from Plungington cycles n Preston for about £80 I think. My dad paid cash so the owner threw in a frame pump I'd been eying up. A few years later we went back there and bought a Diamond Back Topanga mountain bike with 21 indexed gears! Sadly the shop along with several others in Preston closed a few years later when bike superstore Charnock Richard cycles opened and had their annoying advert on local radio station RockFM playing every 10 mins!

We have 2 Puchs a 1980 Women's 10 Speed Lavender color and 1982 Men's 12 speed Purple in color. A bit older than your 1990 model Frames are in very good to excellent condition everything that can rust has rusted on the rest of them. Not ridden in 20 years but kept out of the weather - just dusty. Checking with local dealer to see cost of re-storing them to ride-able condition. At 70+ years we don't need any hi-tech equipment.

Thanks for watching on my main Canyon road bikes yes the bar tape is wrapped from the bottom up and I completely understand the logic. Hello my friend and thanks for the years of on going support. I did have this reply through facebook. "Hi andy, puch has been the most prestigious bike-brand in austria, bikes like the "mistral ultima" or the "mistral superleicht" were in the range of the best racebikes of the late 70ies and 80ies. unfortunately the management made some wrong decisions and the bike-production was sold to bianchi in 1987 (the motorcycle-production to piaggo), since then it was just a middleclass-brand in the bianchi-range. puch mistral ultima-, competition-, vent noir- and superleicht-bikes were originally built up with campy super record and victory or with shimano dura ace, they are highly seeked today". I love digging this information up, so still non the wiser on the tubing on our bike. It was as light as any other though. All the best Andy
