This song came out in 2001. I remember I began listening to it when I moved to Seattle in 2003. There was a radio station called “The Funky Monkey”. 104.9. The guy on the radio station would call out the name of the band or singer and the name of the song. I began my freshman year of high school in 2003 and it was awesome to listen to this song on my Walkman on my way home from school on the bus. It was amazing to be a teenager during a time like this in the early 2000s with such beautiful music. Now at age 36, I can only reminisce my youth and tell my nieces and nephews about it. They’re all still kids under 13, but I hope they one day can realize how beautiful those times were. To my millennials born in the mid 80s to early 90s, I salute you. We were the last great generation.

Anyone can be a father, but it takes a special person to be a Dad. I was lucky to have that Dad. He was my mentor and my best friend . He passed away 3 years ago. I miss him so much. I am now carrying for my mom. She and my dad were married for 62 years. I can't imagine the heartache she fills every day. Dad, I am keeping my promise to take care of her. I have custody of my son, the moment he was born he became like the center of gravity for me, the moment he touched my hand in the NICU I knew then and there he deserved much more than the life he would have been brought into at the time…he’s 5 now, and I’d go through hell all over again no matter how many times I’d have to for him ❤️ he is and forever will be my reason.

I thought of it as the total opposite. I think anyone can be a dad. But it takes much more knowledge and patience to be a father. A father by name is much more noble and trustworthy. They are both fine by anyone's standards.. I guess I was abused by my dad and got repremanded for looking at him. He provided for us and we had a big cozy home.. but he was a closet alcoholic. Very physical and emotional abuse. My mom got the worst of it. For 35 yrs. I was 10 and waited up for them to come home from the dances on the weekend.. and watched him beat up my mom. Finally I got a bat and confronted them outside. Told him if he hits her one more time.. I'm hitting him. He tried to grab me and I hit him as hard as I could and he tried chasing me but he was drunk. I grabbed the car keys and put my mom in the car and took her to my sisters. I was 12 yrs old. Thx for the time.. peace

Leaving a comment to represent the kids like myself who didn't have the Dad that fought for them, who didn't protect them, and hurt them the most. This song takes a different perspective when you come from a place of longing for someone to take it all away and be there for you. He is dead now and I won't ever have a chance for it. Treat your kids with love and compassion because they remember forever.

Your comment ignores the root of the problem. People having babies that didn’t want babies. A child born from two people that love each other usually turns out to be a good person.
@Vendicative4 ай бұрын
I can attest from both of your perspectives. I feel for the way Beasley explains not having a dad that didn't protect them. The way i feel on guitarcomet5's remark - not that I did not love my X . I knew i wasn't ready at that time. I wanted to wait till 28. I divorced when i was a 27 year old asshole. It haunts and hurts me to this day I don't have Son, Daughter, or a wife 16 yrs later 💔 completely my fault
@guitarcomet54 ай бұрын
@@Vendicative my story is relatable, then…. I was a 24 year old virgin. My ex-wife was a 16 year old that saw me as a ticket to get away from her parents and party like it’s 1999 (this was back in 1988). Being a rock guitarist in local bands, she thought my life was party central at the clubs. Far from it! I don’t drink (only smoke pot) and I wouldn’t allow her to drink. She hooked up with a younger guy that would buy her all the liquor she wanted. We were married for about 5 months when she ran off the first time. Back together after a week with drinking buddy, she ran off again. This time they shacked up for three months (until all the bills were due) then she moved back home with her parents…pregnant with buddy’s baby. Her mom ran buddy off and my ex tried to get back with me, but once I found out about the child she was carrying, I dumped her. Cold! She ended up marrying her high school sweetheart (who had missed her terribly for a few years). They had another baby but before it was born husband #2 started beating on her just like he used to do. So she left him. Hooked up with a man with 3 children of his own and did the Brady Bunch family thing for 15+ years…then dumped husband #3 for a much younger man (I call him her “pool boy”). Like father/mother, like son/daughter? Her son had a baby with a young lady. They’ve split up. Her daughter has had two babies by a man 12 years older than her. They split up. BTW, I’ve never had any children.

We were poor as dirt because of it but i wouldnt trade one second. He was paralyzed on his left side since he was 18 but never took any government assistance. He worked his crippled ass off every day to make sure we made it. This song always reminds me of the sacrifices he made to make sure we had a stable upbringing ❤️

My husband of 26 years took his life. He was the love of my life. He had Bipolar disorder. When things were good, they were wonderful. When things weren’t good, they were so very difficult. But, if I could do it all over again, I’d still choose him, and if I could know what I know now, I’d do so much more to try to help him. This song may not have been written about this subject, but it really speaks to me. My family and I hurt so deeply, and I grieve for him all of the time.

They don't have to be biological parents. Don't even have to be foster parents. They can simply be the adults that have and made a positive impact on your life. When you become an adult, in your own special way before it is too late, Say thanks to your mommy or daddy. "I am safe. You can retire. You can relax. I've got your back." It takes a village to raise a child. But it also takes a child to wreck havoc on the city. Dennis the Menance did it -why can't I? No, no, no. That's not how the game works....

You are so right.....everything is about women and to ensure their rights. And thats good But the broken hearted dads out there are forgotten.... Tee Gee keep fighting for your kids! I got custody of my daughter 13 years ago, it hasn’t been easy but seeing her graduate from high school and hold down a job makes me really proud. Good luck to all the dads out there fighting for their kids! My guy, I hope you are good. I'm sorry for your father - that life overcame him - but I hope you will amplify his strength and be stronger. I hope all men - and all fathers - can persevere.

To all fathers who have been through this, as I have, those going through this, never give up, EVER, Fatherhood is the greatest gift and love of all. Every child deserves a good dad. Get the best legal advice you can, keep records of your efforts of attendance, utilise support groups or dad help services, keep focused on the love you have for your child, believe me it is worth it despite the countless tears and pain you go through, to see them grow with love and become a unique individual and to hear "I love dad", nothing is better. @@daphineheck3335 So sorry to hear my heart goes out to you. My dad never cared & was never there. I made an oath to myself, be the dad I never had, Repeat or break the cycle. I stuck through it for 15+ years, I can't explain the emotional pain and financial loss year after year I went through, but the amazing relationship I have sustained with my child, despite my ex's evil doings, gives me the motivation & love to be the best loving & fulfilling dad I can be with child no matter what. I wish you all the best in life from the bottom of my heart & also to all others in your situation. I totally understand. Take care of yourself & your child first & foremost. DADS FOR KIDS. Being a great dad is the greatest gift in life.

Sometimes not together IS better If you think it’s imperfect so will he Make it fabulous in its present state. Show him there’s always a choice in perspective. You can always CHOOSE how you’re going to look at things. It’s really the ONLY thing that we have complete control over.

***** On the contrary. Everything we have done is what makes us who we are, everything we do is what makes us who we will be. It's all about what you're going to do in light of everything you've done. Do you submit to the same vices, make the same mistakes, or do you break the patterns that your past is proof of? It may be all about the things you're going to do because we can't change the past, but when somebody can hear about your past and say "How did you go from that to this?" That is what it's all about. Looking back on your life and knowing that you seized control of your deficiencies, which are different for everybody. The past is what defines us, but the future is what changes our entry in the dictionary. In a way you are both right but just missing the other half of each other. Life is about looking back as often as you look forward, because the mistakes of the past have no place in the future. And reinventing yourself means looking back just as much as you look forward because only your past knows what needs reinventing.

My mum used to play this song in the car with me when i was young and she was in a abusive relationship. I found this song again a couple months ago after totally forgetting about it and it is the only thing apart from my son that gives me a bit of peace. I can relate to it so much, i was away overseas from my son for over 2 years due to problems between me and his mum and my behaviour at the time. I was taking a lot of drugs trying to numb the pain of not seeing him but was getting further away from seeing him due to this. I came back to where he lives and i am now working and enjoying time with my boy. There is nothing more precious than time with my son and there never will be. He has always been everything to me and now this song pops up in my life again and becomes my favourite song as it was my mums when she was going through tough times. Beautiful song and so relatable to so many ordinary people. Real music made by real people with real problems❤ love to everyone in a bad place at the moment. It cant rain all the time
