Many forget that Puerto Rico beat the USA team on two previos ocasiones (the ones made of college playes). Once in México and the Pan American games in Cuba and in the World Cup in Argentina in 1990. It hardly made the news in United States but it did shook the United States Basketball Commitee. 2 years later the formed the Dream Team for the 1992 Olympics.

Puerto Rico beat a college team first in 1989 for the gold at the World Qualifier in México with the likes of Christian Laettner and Gary Payton. Puerto Rico always have talented players when are able to play as a unit, and this game was the perfect example, they play hard and most importantly they were consistent. I remember watching this game live. it was either a saturday or sunday afternoon. And I was going crazy. I am a Puerto Rican. Born in the US, and i'm a veteran. I love my Country and I love Puerto Rico. Watching this game all I wanted and hoped was for Puerto Rico to have a good outing. And make it competitive. I didn't not think it was going to go down the way it did. USA had Iverson, Marbury, Duncan, Stoudamire, Lebron, Wade, Carmelo. and PR had arroyo and Ayuso and? But for that day all the stars aligned. And they played great. And they played hard. They deserved the win. And the US was hit with a dose of reality right in the mouth!

Most of PR players played in the European leagues. Now, guess who won the gold and silver medals. Ortiz is a FIBA hall of famer.

Solo hay que ver el estilo de juego de PR aqui en este partido, pausado, tomando su tiempo, pases inteligentes, sin desesperarse, contrario a estos dias, tan prnto reciben la bola ya quieren anotar mucha desesperacion cero pases y mucho turnover, dificil volver a ese nivel con esa mentalidad. This was such a huge embarrassment considering that Puerto Rico is a small U.S. territory. And the U.S. lost by 19. It was much worse than the 1988 USA team losing to Russia in the Olympics. That team was U.S. college kids vs. Russian pro players and Russia was a world basketball power at the time and won the gold medal. And the U.S. only lost by 6 in 1988. In 2004, Puerto Rico didn't medal (although the U.S. lost to gold medal winner Argentina too)
