I am PuertoRican and I approve this message. She left out a lot of good and bad as well. The list can go on and on just like here in the states. My take on this is. You only live once. So move around and try everywhere if you can. I want to retire on the island but not sure if I could. Going on vacation is not the same as living there but I certainly want to try it after kids finish school here in TX. I’ll address the elephant in the room. Because the median income on the island is less than desirable, you need to be aware of crime, Then again there are some cities in the US that are worse. Since gun laws are horrible in PR ( very difficult to obtain a license) crime is high just like in the states. Anyways, PR is great. My family loves it and I’ll keep going until I am gone.

I've visited PR over 25 times in the last 7 years and I love it. My favs are the food, sights, activities and the people. I love driving the entire island and see mountains, rainforests and beaches. Traffic is bad sometimes, but that's everywhere. I also like to see the colorful signs that announce when you enter a new town/city. I haven't lived there so I can't speak on dealing with the public offices or government. You won't get too many negative comments from me, I chalk it up as that's how they do it over there. I lived in PR for over 15yrs and besides that i travel w work so i've lived throughout the US as well. When i move somewhere as i did in PR i choose to live among the locals rather than in gated communities for ex. but thats just me.. I lived in Ponce, and Mayaguez. They refer to PR as the island of enchantment and maybe i'm a little more spiritual than i know myself to be but not only do i believe it to be so, but i also have felt it to be that island of enchantment. The highways well for ex if you miss an exit the next turn around is a while away. Anyway i look forward to the day that i can move back there again, i would do so in a blink of an eye.. Yeah PR is busy and if you look for traffic it will be easy to find, but i miss living there among those great people. I will be back.

As someone from the mainland South there are way less mosquitoes, flies, and pests here in PR. Also the driving is fine....it’s not perfect but as a world traveler it’s no big deal compared to Africa and Europe and some parts of the mainland US (Boston anyone?!). I think expecting things to be like your personal experience in the US and then being put off when it’s not is a little unfair (esp when you haven’t even seen the best and worst parts of where you currently live) but it takes a special kind of person to step out of their comfort zone and relearn what to love so at least you tried.

I am from New York, but learned to drive while living in Puerto Rico. The driving is definitely more chaotic in Puerto Rico. No one signals when changing lanes, people drive on the shoulder, and you have slow people on the fast lane and people speeding on the slow lane. Driving in NY is chaotic for different reasons. There’s always way too much traffic. But drivers abide by the rules more.

Still worked in Manhattan so drove from Bayside to Manhattan 5 days a week. Traffic was bad, bad but the drivers are respectful and if you know how to drive the madness of driving through San Juan, Santurce, Hato Rey, Condado, Carolina etc... driving through Manhattan and Brooklyn and Queens is a cake walk. En serio. The driving in PR is insane.

The LIKES that jumped out at me were DRIVING and the MOUNTAINS. Driving is entertaining and an adventure. I used to visit PR in the 80s and 90s, and it was truly the wild wild west on the roads because speeding tickets were like $10. I used to love speeding and mixing it up with all the other crazy drivers. I used to fit right in. I lived and live in a small town in Florida where driving is boring. I forgot when it happened (maybe around 2000) that speeding tickets became expensive, and things got less crazy on the roads. The traffic and congestion always makes it a little crazy, and you have to be a good driver to drive in PR. You cannot be hesitant, fearful, or timid. Again, I live in Florida, where everything is flat. I love Love LOVE the mountains in PR. Whether you are looking at them from a distance where they make great natural landscapes, or whether you are on them appreciating the beautiful views they offer, I just love them. I love driving the winding mountain roads, too. And best of all the cooler temps just makes them so much more comfortable. I'd love to live in PR, but you better believe that I would live in some mountain town. I would NOT live down in elevation where it's as hot and stifling and humid as here in Florida.

Somethings have been getting better. Except for banks. Great highways on southeastern part and going north and south. Fantastic and well cared gigantic community in Palma de Mar. South Eastern part tends to be the farms so the land tends to be less of a jungle but well tended land. Also drier less humid. Plenty of gated communities through out the Island. The island is so small with a plan trip you avoid most of the heavy traffic. In any urban area it is loud. Go to New York. So depends it depends on where you live. For example Rincon area sleepy and very quiet except for the surfing seasons when tourist come in. Services inconsistently consistent through tout the island for sure lol . You need back up power and water. Any contracted job tends to be generally bad in scheduling but many places in the states are bad as well and rip you off in prices. Contractors when they do show are just as skilled as in the mainland and cheaper. If inpatient do not come. Example restaurants while the food is good the service is slow. The other side you are never rushed out in general. New infrastructure being built. The districto area in San Juan opened with modern technology, great restaurants, plenty of parking and great performing venue. Government services horrible based on Spanish European bureaucracy not United States standard. Getting a drivers license..want it fast get an expediter for a fee. Form of accepted corruption like in many places in southern and Eastern Europe. Moved here but in my case the positive outweighs the negatives. I lived in New York, FLorida, Georgia, Texas, Montana, and California. So huge experience in comparing. In every state I lived there were issues like crime, services snd other things. Interesting the best services were California but expenses not good. New York not good services snd expensive. .. I am not going back in my case. I am on footholds of Rio Grande near Wyndham beach and resort with social membership but live in a gated community with a newly built 4000 square foot home with, hurricane grade windows, pool and all the modern technology including, e;extricate station in my garage for my electric car, security systems, solar, back up generator, cistern with both Mountain View and ocean view and except for the natural fauna, birds and coqui frog silence and ocean waves at night. Cost in California easily bottom 2-3 million dollars if not certainly more. Paid 650000 for this. Many places in the coastal area in the mainland are unaffordable. Travel to the states and Europe frequently..airport 30 minutes away. Flights to Europe cheap especially to Spain. Portugal, and Italy. Nope I will not be coming back. Like anything else depends on what part of the island you live and what lifestyle you want. Culture definitely different. If you want an so called American enclave you can find it but I think it is sad. If you uncomfortable around a different culture and looking for home here...big advise do not come and frankly you not welcome. What you read in the mainland from time to time is so negative. Yea there are some problems here but no worse than the United States. Crime is mainly in San Juan and in certain sections but so it is the same in the states. The crime tends to be over control of drugs. You don’t get involve in drugs no problem period. Random crime does occur but definitely like some parts of the USA where it is endemic.People are actually friendly, polite snd if you a women jogging by yourself you will not get harassed like many places in the state. So it is safe but like anything else use good judgement depending on where you live. Hope this helps.

Great video! I will agree with you totally after visiting last year August. Growing up in a third world country and immigrating to the US, I think that PR definitely mixes both of the worlds and I love that! Happy to be moving this year. Took advantage of Acts 20,22 before it expired last December! Acts 60 is more stringent. Glad to help anybody interested in doing Acts 60 for a small fee!
@FINANCIALFREEDOMCJ4 жыл бұрын
Diane Cohn they are combining the two. In Acts 60, the individual investor part which was formerly Acts 22, has a requirement of buying a home within 2 yrs and the donation went up from $5000 to $10,000. In the Export services section which was formerly Acts 20, there is a requirement for a employee if your business does more than $3 Million and the property tax exemptions are being reduced too! I think this happened because of the demand for it and probably pressure from folks that are not happy about the incentives. For people like you that took advantage of the incentive and then moved back to Mainland, are you booted out of the program or can you take advantage of it if you ever returned?

I am Puerto Rican and agree with all the good and the bad you mentioned in this video. You’re a 💯 correct. Only thing is “coqui” sounds is more like “Kokee Kokee” than “Ooooh Oooooh” lol Thank you for teachers others about your experience in the Island.

Hi Diane. We are in our 50s. I am an account executive and work from home so I must have strong internet. Hubby is a business owner. It is just the two of us besides our 2 sweet inside only furbabies (shih tzus) who are puppy pad trained indoors only. We would like to rent furnished condo in a gated area. Please provide price ranges as we cannot get info on that. 2 bdrm 2 bath. We would like to stay for 1-2 years before committing. Thank you for all you do as we find it very helpful.

I had to laugh about the driving, that was a great discription. I am Puerto Rican and feel the same about the driving.

We miss you too. You are spot on with ur comment's. The reason why you cannot pay at the gas pump. They want you to go inside the store and buy chip's, cake,soda,beer.

We live in Ft Myers Fl but also owns couple of houses in PR. One in Humacao the other in Mayaguez. We call ourself tropical Birds. I agree with all the things you dislike but the loudness. That's not a Puerto Rico culture. That's a latin culture. If you go anywhere in Latin America it will still be a loud place. Yes driving in PR is almost like driving a race car in a race track but at the end you get use to it.

I have been offered a job in Puerto Rico from my company. Currently living on the East coast of Canada so I am interested, for obvious reason. Would you move and live there permanently, your opinion? Thanks for video, quite informative.

I lived in Puerto Rico for all of my teenage years and about 5 years of my adulthood. I will agree with everything you said regarding the positives and negatives. I hated dealing with government agencies, I felt customer service was lacking. Also, the wait times were insane! I don’t miss the ridiculous amounts of potholes and driving skills there 🤣🤣 However, I do miss the feeling of being home. The warmth, the food, my people, beaches. I miss it but maybe wouldn’t live there, maybe go on extended stays.

@@dorkladytravels I stayed at the Embassy in Dorado for 2 weeks recently during a trip to PR. Probably close to where you used to live. Weird set up for a hotel.....had to go through a security gate...then several communities.....and the hotel at the end of the road.
@jcostas024 жыл бұрын
@@dorkladytravels I think the lack of "pay at the pump" is due to the fact that the gas stations make their real money on the margins from the mini-market sales inside. You gotta love how PR gas stations also double as bars with really cold beer on ice next to the cashiers and people often guzzling their beer while pumping gas. All that would be gone if people could pay at the pump:)
@ericpizarro30844 жыл бұрын
Some pumps now have an App where you can pay with your phone at the pump. The reason why they stoped many years ago paying at the pump was security. Bad people will put mag band and they will scam your CC. It is for your own security.

I was a precision driver in the film industry (we work in unison with stuntmen) and Puerto Rican drivers are among the worst in the world but I love the rally racing feel of navigating around and through the staggered traffic that is exactly as described in this video. The left lane is often the slow lane and we dart in and out and around the slower vehicles, and I have seen police drive by accidents without stopping but they'll pull you over for expired registration in a heartbeat, and if you're in an accident with someone with expired registration it's automatically their fault because that vehicle shouldn't have been on the road, but if you're broadsided in an intersection even if you had the right of way, it's 50% liability to both parties without witnesses, so it's crazy town in some respects.

Nice! I like how you shared both sides of your experience. Some negatives I agree with and some are common in certain states as well. I still miss PR (people, food, beaches) and plan to return when I retire. 🏝❤️🇵🇷☺️
