Puerto Rico is a Caribbean island with a rich history, gorgeous beaches, lush mountains, rushing waterfalls, and the El Yunque rainforest.
If you’re visiting for just a few days, like we were, you can easily fit in beach time, adventure time, and culture time.
Old San Juan
San Juan is the capital and largest city with a little something for everyone. This part of the city is home to the San Juan Historic Site, featuring beautiful buildings dating from the 16th century, two Spanish fortresses, old city walls, cobblestoned streets, and pastel-colored houses. There is so much history, culture, and life in this neighborhood!
El Yunque
El Yunque is one of the reasons many tourists visit the island of Puerto Rico. It is the only tropical rainforest in the United States national forest system. From the beautiful foliage to the breathtaking waterfalls, you won’t be able to get through this park without seeing something new.
It is home to nearly 240 species of trees, of which 23 are found nowhere else in the world!
Toro Verde
Toro Verde is located in the lush mountains of Orocovis. It is home to the longest single-run zipline in North America: The Monster: which has a total distance of 1.5 miles. You do it while on your stomach, like Superman, and can achieve speeds up to 93 mph at more than 380m high in the island's mountainous center.
Toro bikes: Pedal on a bike adapted to a zipline cable flying over the trees and admiring mountain views. It’s the longest cable bike circuit in the world. Certified Guinness World Record.
Cabo Rojo
In southwest Puerto Rico, an unexpected sight: cotton-candy pink water glistening in the sun. The hue is thanks to a combination of algae, bacteria, salt, and water that caused a 1,249-acre area of two 18-inch-deep natural lagoons.
Rincon
Located on the western coast of Puerto Rico, Rincon is a paradise for beach lovers and surfers. While Rincon boasts several famous surf spots, you’ll also find beaches where you can snorkel, paddleboard, dive, fish, swim, and relax.
Situated on a bluff surrounded by a lovely park, the Rincon lighthouse offers a setting where you can relax and have great views of the ocean.
It is really just a pretty location to see some natural beauty.
Dona Juana Falls
Dona Juana Waterfall is a convenient roadside attraction along the PR-149 that cuts right through the center of Puerto Rico. This waterfall drops in three tiers into a nice swimming hole. The water temperature was perfect - cold enough to take your breath away when you first jumped in, but once you’d been in, you felt like you would never want to get out again.
Bio Bay
A Natural Phenomenon Like No Other! A bio bay is a unique ecosystem formed by a microorganism called dinoflagellates. These tiny organisms emit a bright blue-green light when disturbed, creating a mesmerizing and ethereal light show.
When it comes to bio bay tours in Puerto Rico, there are two main options to choose from: Fajardo and Vieques. Fajardo’s Bio Bay, also known as Laguna Grande, is the island’s largest and most popular bio bay.
We did a Kayak Bio Bay Tour in Fajardo. The tour starts with a scenic kayak trip through the mangroves of the Laguna Grande, followed by a guided bio bay tour, and star gazing.
When planning your visit to Puerto Rico, don’t miss out on the opportunity to experience the beauty of the bio bays.
