RPG Story: Chadwick Strongpants

This story is from a game of Mutants and Masterminds, which is another tabletop RPG like Dungeons and Dragons, but it focuses on making superheroes instead of an adventurer. This story is about my brother and getting him into tabletop RPGs and that one time he couldn't make a superhero in time for the game, but I made one for him instead. Enjoy!

Since I started playing Call of Cthulhu I apply the same philosophy to characters in other RPGs as I do in CoC, I make a character, and not stats, the other rpg I play is shadowrun, where if you know how, you can make quite the OP character, but instead I go more for something that would live in a world like that, I play a japanese fire mage, I can make lasers (in shadowrun mostly useless), control fire and making food out of thin air, so most of the time I eat, smoke cigarettes and drink out of my little cantine of high proof alcohol...and get my ass kicked, its really fun to play, but he is no where as skilled as my past characters

Once for mutants and masterminds I made a character for the lowest tier of play, and poured all the points into immortality at the highest level. I had a little left over for a rank or two of martial arts stuff, and that was it. I said he was a citizen of Pompeii, and discovered his power when Vesuvius erupted, only recently being dug up. He spent all that time alone, unable to eat, drink, or even breathe, his madness causing him to forget almost everything, and had to learn a new language just to explain that. While buried, he ended up referring to himself as Vesuvius. All that FOR THE LOWEST POSSIBLE TIER OF PLAY. This was a street level person, who would take on guys oof the caliber of daredevil or Jessica Jones. But even Galactus level characters couldn't kill him. Mutants and masterminds can get really absurd.

Have you ever heard of the Orc Thief? He put all his points into intimidation and none into stealth but it worked out alright in the end. Instead of rolling to see if the guards didn't see them, he rolled high on intimidation and would essentially go up to the guards and scream "YOU NO SEE GRONK" upon which the guards agreed that they did not see the giant orc thief running around.

Yep, people see the word "Thief" and think "stealthy, cunning rogue", but it could just as easily mean "big, scary, armed mugger" or hell, "manipulative, overly-cautious office work embezzler". It's all about that creative flair you bring to your character that really makes them stand out in their role. "YOU NO SEE GRONK!" is my new favorite Thief reference.

There's the whole saying "you can't see the forest for the trees" or is it "you can't see the trees for the forest" that makes me think a rogue giant could actually work really well with Thief stealth if you take into account how unsuspecting one might be of a large tree in the middle of a forest, or if the ground shaking is too much of a giveaway, being concealed within a rockslide on a mountain could easily be the preferred method of theft from some sort o mountain giant bandit leader. Or perhaps how easily one could "pickpocket" by simply bumping into all sorts of people and stores and unassumingly steal during the ensuing mess of things and purses being knocked down without much of a thought given to the "sleight of hand" of a giant when one might, for example, run down a busy street and nab a purse and no one could notice simply because the giant's balled up fist conceals the stolen theft as they flee from the scene of the crime not even having been suspected because no one would have assumed such a blatant theft to occur from someone so large and easy to spot.

Hey, those stormtroopers on the Death star were ordered to miss, because of the crew of the Millennium Falcon had to get back to the ship, so that they could fly away so the tracking beacon would work and give away the Rebel base. Shooting a few guys vs. finding the rebel base...you can see where Imperial commanders went. They weren't stupid. And if they were, Darth Vader would choke them to death while making fun of them.

This video actually inspired my favorite character for any game ever. My friend was running mutants and Masterminds and I had watched this video with Chadwick strongpants so I built Rosebud. In this world, a famous superhero named rosebud was the strongest hero in the world but, unknown to the world, he died in a fight. Everyone assumed this random guy that was knocked unconscious during the fight and looked a little like Rosebud, was rosebud. So, he used this to become a powerful superhero with no powers other than the perception of him as this all powerful superhero. He played incredibly and was a blast all around so thank you Ben for that.

I feel like I would have a good time playing Chadwick. Provided he's got the nullification field. I would just tweak his backstory a little. (Small edit for clarity) Chad is a working his way through college as a security guard at a bank, unaware that he's exuding a nullification field. One day a super powered brute decides to knock off the bank where he works and, calling upon his all-state wrestling skills from high school and latent powers, subdues the brute. And while the brute is trying to figure out how this security guard is managing to get him in a choke hold, Chad "realizes" the dude wasn't really super powered, just a guy who's faking it and hoping no one would call him one it. But he decides to play along and uses his name from his wrestling days, "Don't know you, you're fighting Chadwick Strongpants!" The next super powered baddy who tries to knock off the bank, shoots his laser eyes, but nothing happens. Chad, who had been fooling around on his phone and sees his boss was about to bust him for it, holds up his phone and says he'd just programmed a laser capture app on his phone. That placates his boss, gets him out of hot water, and Chad's reputation as a brute, stronger than brutes and a technologist prepared for anything grows. Meanwhile, Chad has a different problem. His boss "really believes" in this super power thing, that Chad is now convinced is just the biggest LARP ever. So he's hold, by his boss that supers don't work at the bank... at least not that anyone is supposed to know. Of course they've had supers at the bank before. In fact Larry, the security guard who trained Chad, was a super. (Chad always thought Larry was a bit of a flake. Which he was, because he was a super and never had to worry about things like "procedures". But Larry quit shortly after Chad started because he was having trouble with his powers and couldn't figure out why, which only cemented his reputation as a flake in Chad's eyes.) But no one was supposed to know that they hired supers, because that would be bad for the normals who they were legally obligated to hire anyways. So, Chad had better keep his super powered escapades on the DL, and if he wanted to showboat, to get a costume and prowl the streets in his off hours, like the rest of the supers. Chad's too lazy to start running on the street. After all, he thinks, his only real power is a good imagination. But eventually someone tips him off that there's real money in "the game" (as Chad calls it) and that he could have a sweet base. So with his imagination and everyone else's gullibility, he decides to enter "the game" for real and use his spoils to build the sweetest bachelor pad lair ever, still convinced that there are no super powers and that he's just real good at gaming the game. The biggest down side to this character is he also inadvertently nullifies his teammates, too. Of course they don't know why their bonuses are being canceled (the DM will have to play it carefully if you want to keep the players out of the loop). And the stuff he says, like, "Seriously? Just point and them and 'pew pew' like you always do! Why you makin' me do all the hard stuff?" usually alienates actual powered people who are struggling to cope with with the loss of their powers. Also, if someone starts pulling out a gun, he will straight up bail on the fight if he can. Not, like, in a run like a coward way, just like "That dude's shooting real bullets? Not cool." and the we saunters off and says "That dude's not worth it." So he's only good for one-offs. But that just boosts his reputation as a loner. I think it'd be funny if he meets up with Larry later.

I would run him kind of like an SCP, everyone knows about him and his exploits, but nobody's actually sure WHERE they heard of him, just that they know he's the most powerful being in existence. When he confronts villains, they're overwhelmed by the fear from the stories they know of him and fly into a panic, shooting randomly and wind up hurting themselves.

Yup. Slower starting speed, smaller damage dice, penalty to str, no bonuses to dex or wis, cha and cons bonus which isn't a monk priority really. They'd make good articifers but monks don't really need weapons and armor. But they'd make the cutest of monks 🙂

Im gonna echo what's already been said here. I love these videos.... BUT sometimes I really question how fun it actually is to play at your table. I'm sure it is exaggerated to some degree but in this one it really doesn't seem like you had any real interest in winning your brother over. Three sessions where he was hopelessly disabled? I'm surprised he didn't just leave to do something else, that is a lot of time to be doing nothing. At least from this video it sounds like neither you as GM or the rest of the players even attempted to get him back in the action. And when you finally got him to give TTRPGs another go you trolled him with a useless character? True he left it to the last minute to make a character but he was going to make one. Having said all that it sounds like you did let him make his own character in the end which is a bit of a shame coz that aura of nullify based character sounds pretty neat, reminds me of a character from the book "Beyond Redemption".

As a seasoned GM, and especially for Star Wars RPGs in general, I feel bad for how they handled this. There are so many things the GM could've done to engage his brother and make it fun for him. And then Puffin being so oblivious to why his brother doesn't like RPGs anymore just baffles me. Plus trolling him once he do play a game with him. Yeah, no, that is not how you reignite an interest to anybody for anything in general. (I know for a fact that space combat in SW really suck, no matter which edition, if your character isn't specialized for it. I tend to avoid them or keep them short and cinematic).

The headquarters thing reminds me of my run through Big Eyes, Small Mouth (which is a really wonky system I'll probably never play again.) The game basically plays on Anime tropes, so you can be a magical girl or pokemon master or mecha pilot or whatever. One of our players figured out that you could take a single point in Mecha Pilot to get a mech, and then five points in wealth to have billions of dollars, and spend all of that money upgrading their level 1 mech. .... Okay, I have to ask. How did you exactly manage to create a completly usless chararcter on what I assume is a standard 150 power point Power Level 10 build game ? ( if you were using the basic handbook it's likely pl 10). I mean M&M is not exactly the most balanced game out there (it's VERY easy to break and require a GM who know the system in and out to make decisions about what to allow or not. the price of versatility I'm afraid.), so I'm not going to pretend that every possible builds are equal but still with a 150 pps budget, no mater the combination you choose to spend them in your chararcter is going to be at least midly good at SOMETHING. I mean unless you didn't spend any power points, at which point you didn't so much make a useless character as not make a character at all (I mean that would be the equivalent of in D&D if the Gm handled you a character with no class and no background and said "go on slugger, it's complete !") Or made him an inferior PL as everyone else which is also not balanced by default (once again in D&D 5 its like you get a level 1chararcter and start in the middle of a group where everyone is already level 8. And at the difference of D&D you /don't/ level up in M&M or at least if you do it's very slow and everyone does so at the same rate usualy)

And you start with a modifier of 0 in every score, not -1, just like in last addition, you started with 10 in every stat, not 8 like in D&D point buy. So really effectively a character with a straight 0 everywhere is a PL 0 base with all 150 power points free

Joined a game of Mutants and Masterminds, pretty much my first time playing a tabletop rpg. The GM helped me make my charchter but somehow made a broken character. Had immortality, regeneration, and kinetic energy absorption. As a four foot tall girl asked the colossus to punch me so i could remake the hole that had just closed up in the castle...might have completely destroyed the castle in one punch. We were falling for 6 plus hours. Evey-one had a laugh, we changed how my kinetic energy absorption worked and reset the scene. Still managed to make a mess of things by getting the castle drunk.

I might like to play as Chadwick Strongpants. I theorized a satirical character once called Everyman because he literally had no powers, didn't want to be a hero, but he shot a supervillain in self defense once and got famous for it. As such, he always looks at every perilous situation from the perspective of a regular person in a world without superheroes. Someone's robbing the bank? Everyman: Let's call the police. Orphanage on fire? Everyman: call the fire department, but in the future, make sure all public orphanages are held to a higher fire code standard to prevent such tragedies. Evil McNastyface is about to destroy the universe with his Doomsday device unless we give into his demands? Everyman: Hear out Evil McNastyface's demands, and negotiate down to something more reasonable on the grounds that even super villains kind of need to live in a universe. Despite not being very heroic, he often brought about safer, less ostentatious options to solving problems that other heroes would end up causing a big mess for if they tried to save the day. Everyman's the kind of guy who would likely side against the Incredibles in the aftermath of the Underminer fiasco. While I'm not saying he's always right to be that guy, he sometimes is!

Exactly. My wife ran a D&D game and did something like that to a player for almost two game sessions and then he didn't come back. She didn't do it on purpose but her excuse was that it was just what happened and the dice rolls kept him separated and trapped, and she couldn't understand why he wouldn't want to play again. I had to explain to here the a DMs job is to tell tell a story, include all of the players and make sure everyone has fun. You literally have the power to change the game in any way you need to make sure that happens, you never have to be at the mercy of dice rolls the way players are. She could run a game by the rules and knew the system, she just hadn't gotten used to that idea yet.

To be fair as far as how that looks is that in the space battles he kept getting shot down first and early and then everyone else was having a major space battle and didn't like pull up alongside to try and get him into a ship to continue (something that ranges from dangerous to impossible dependent on the ships involved.) And this happened 3 times probably in different sessions but every space battle he just got taken out.....something that doesn't overly surprise me dependent on the system. We played Saga at one point and even with modded ship life to gain hp based on the pilots we got damn near being blown out of the sky and destroyed frequently. (missiles hurt, Ion just makes things stop.) With the character sheet it ranges there. On the one hand I could slap my damn sister who has been doing this for over a year at one point. On the other I'd never make her an intentionally shit character.

One moment - by Orc Wizard, do you mean the Volo's version? Reason is, while the Volo's version has a -2 penelty to Intelligence, the Eberron and Wildemount versions lack said penelty. On plus side, he can use his staff to knock some sense into people better than the other sorts (unless they too also have a +2 to strength, as most make that the dump stat for wizards).

@@SuperBatSpider Only other one that might be an issue is putting a Kobold in a strength-based class, due to their -2 to strength, but even that can be worked around, when one puts the 15 there, and their +2 to Dexterity means that Mr. Barbarian (and Mr. Monk and other Dexterity-based classes) get a boost to their AC, any class that used Dexterity as their Dump Stat would get a 10 (standard stat point array) and thus a 0 modifier, and so on. And with Tasha's Cauldron of Everything coming out in a couple of months, that too might be remedied.
