QUESTION: One thing I've been asking, but without answer is as follows: In Finnish, how to say (1) STOP doing and (2) STOP to do? For example: 1. I stopped smoking. 2. I stopped to smoke. 3. I stopped eating pizza. 4. I stopped to eat pizza.
@sinaosaat5 жыл бұрын
Língua Viva First, you will need two different verbs. ”Lopettaa” for stop doing and ”pysähtyä” for stop to do. For stop doing you will need the other verb in -minen form (verbin substantiivimuoto). If I ask you to stop talking, I would say: lopeta puhuminen. For stop to do you will need a form that ends with -maan or -mään (ma-infinitiivin illatiivi). ”I stopped to eat pizza” would be: ”pysähdyin syömään pizzaa.”
@sinaosaat5 жыл бұрын
Língua Viva The minen-form is often in genetive (notice the letter s): syömisen, lukemisen, puhumisen. Your examples would be: lopetin tupakoimisen, lopetin pizzan syömisen.

THANKS, Jenni. As I just saw on my research on Wikipedia: 1. The following are declensions of "tämä": TÄNNE (sublative), TÄÄLLÄ (superessive), TÄSSÄ (inessive), TÄHÄN (illative); 2. The following are declensions of "tuo": TUONNE (sublative), TUOLLA (superessive), TUOSSA (inessive); 3. The following are declensions of "se": SINNE (sublavite), SIELLÄ (superessive), SIINÄ (inessive). ***MYSTERIES OF LANGUAGE AS I saw in your translations: 1. For HERE (movement), you used TÄNNE (come/bring), BUT mysteriously you used TÄHÄN (put); Is it because each verb has its own specific rule? 2. For THERE (movement), what would be the difference between SINNE and TUONNE? Would it be the proximity? 3. For THERE (NO movement), you used TUOLLA (be), but mysteriously you used SIELLÄ (do). 4. I ask why TÄSSÄ and TUOSSA were not used. I know that languages sometimes break rules, but I don't know (1) if in these cases the rules were broken, (2) or if the rules were indeed followed, but I didn't understand! I'm looking forward for a video explaining this TRICKY THING!

HI, JENNI. I found in this BOOK "Conversational Finnish" by AiIi Rytkönen-Bell and H. David Argoff (1987) - UNIT 2, page 45, the following explanation. ****** ****** ****** ****** SMALL AREA Motion to / No motion / Motion from tähän / tässä / tästä - (right) here tuohon / tuossa / tuosta - (right) there siihen / siinä / siitä - (right) there (previously mentioned) mihin / missä / mistä - where ****** ****** ****** ****** LARGE AREA Motion to / No motion / Motion from tänne / täällä / täältä - here tuonne / tuolla / tuolta - there sinne / siellä / sieltä - there (previously mentioned) minne / missä / mistä - where Note: 'mistä' and 'missä' are used to indicate both small and large areas, while 'mihin' is preferred for small areas and 'minne' for large areas.

Thank you for an interesting link. Actually I don't fully agree with the explanation. Normally "mihin" and "minne" are synonyms and you can use either one. For example, you can ask either "Mihin menet lomalla?" or "Minne menet lomalla?" They both mean: Where are you going on holiday?

HERE and THERE is another tricky thing in Finnish. Hi, Jenni. As far as I know: (1) Tässä/täällä (here) and tuossa/tuolla (there) expresses NO MOVEMENT; (2) Tänne ("to" here) and tuonne/sinne ("to" there) expresses MOVEMENT. ***AM I RIGHT? It would be very nice (sugestion) if you made a special vídeo explaining this TRICKY feature of Finnish. How would I say in kirjakieli (you singular) the following? 1. Come here. Go there. 2. Bring it here. Take it there. 3. Put it here. Put it there. 4. It is here (a book). It is there. 5. What were you doing here? What were you doing there? This is so tricky that there are other words related such as: siinä, siellä; And also is tricky the difference between tässä, täällä and tuossa, tuolla. THANKS FOR READING THIS LONG REQUEST.

Língua Viva You are basically right about the movement. And this is a really tricky thing to teach. Thanks for your suggestion, I will put it on my list of ideas.

Língua Viva The sentences you asked would be as follows: 1. Tule tänne. Mene sinne (or Mene tuonne, depending on context.) 2. Tuo se tänne. Vie se tuonne. 3. Laita se tähän. Laita se sinne (or tuonne). 4. Se on täällä. Se on tuolla. 5. Mitä teit täällä? Mitä teit siellä?

Could you please explain why learning kirjakieli before puhekieli? It's totally meaningless learning kirjakieli since you won't understand the spoken form. The Finns are learning puhekieli first, why shouldn't beginners do the same? It makes no sense.
@sinaosaat4 жыл бұрын
Same rules apply to both forms of Finnish: you need verb conjugation and all the 14 cases (genetiivi, partitiivi etc.) in spoken Finnish as much as in written Finnish. The most reasonable way to learn Finnish is actually learn spoken and written forms at the same time.
@cujo95074 жыл бұрын
But why isn't puhekieli taught in the first place? Why even bother to start learning kirjakieli when everything spoken is puhekieli? Beginners are taught a form that hardly anyone speaks in everyday life of which knowledge doesn't make you understand the spoken language. It makes completely no sense.
@sinaosaat4 жыл бұрын
@@cujo9507 Starting with written language is a little bit easier. Once you know the rules in written language it is easier to understand how spoken language works. Besides, there is only one written form of Finnish (and everyone in Finland knows it), but many ways to speak it. If you start learning spoken Finnish in Turku and don’t know written language at all, you will be in trouble in Helsinki. Please remember that spoken and written language are not separate, everyone in Finland needs both of them. That’s why you can’t learn only one or another.
@cujo95074 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but you can still incorporate the spoken language in the education, can't you? If kirjakieli will make me understand puhekieli, why isn't it the other way around? After all, the Finns learn puhekieli first, then kirjakieli.
@sinaosaat4 жыл бұрын
@@cujo9507 As I said, it would be best to learn spoken and written language at the same time. Children learn of course spoken language first, but for adults the learning process is very different.
