My initial thought was to turn the stone over and see if I could release the pin that held the sword. Too bad no one tried it. I wanted to see if it would have worked.

The pin was probably disengaged electrically using a solenoid. Put a strong magnet in the right place, and you can move the slug without engaging the electromagnet. It's a common flaw with electronic door locks and safes.

I’ve seen this a dozen times and just now figured out that “make their hair smart” means make it look nice, not make it intelligent, so you would use a comb. I think it’s a clue!

My first thought was quite literally how quick people let go after starting to pull on "the sword from the stone" and everything else was a red hering but no one stops them from attemtping over and over again with the twist being that normally you would pull harder and longer while letting go as quick as you can after a small pull was the right answer

I have to admit, if I was on that task, it wouldn't even occur to me to say anything specific before trying to draw the sword. I'd have tried to work out which mechanism was being used, probably either a plug or electromagnet and try to figure out how to disrupt it without damaging either. Of course, if they used a remote and battery/servo combo It would be kinda tough to solve that one, though I suppose opening a concealed compartment wouldn't count as damaging, would it?

The nerd that you are should already know that in some versions of the story (namely the Vulgate Cycle), the Sword in the Stone *was* Excalibur. In later versions (e.g. Le Morte d’Arthur) there were two different swords. There’s no single canon of Arthurian legend, as with almost all folklore.
