arthur didn't throw the sword in the stone into the lake. the sword in the stone was too heavy and unsuited for battle, so the Lady of the Lake threw Excalibur (aka Caliburn) at him, which he used in his battles. Excalibur was the sword that Griflet (or in some stories, Bedivere) threw into the lake after Arthur was mortally wounded, upon his orders.

My initial thought was to turn the stone over and see if I could release the pin that held the sword. Too bad no one tried it. I wanted to see if it would have worked.

The pin was probably disengaged electrically using a solenoid. Put a strong magnet in the right place, and you can move the slug without engaging the electromagnet. It's a common flaw with electronic door locks and safes.

I have to admit, if I was on that task, it wouldn't even occur to me to say anything specific before trying to draw the sword. I'd have tried to work out which mechanism was being used, probably either a plug or electromagnet and try to figure out how to disrupt it without damaging either. Of course, if they used a remote and battery/servo combo It would be kinda tough to solve that one, though I suppose opening a concealed compartment wouldn't count as damaging, would it?
