Very helpful video! Thanks for making it. We're getting ready to pull the propeller (for the 1st time) on our almost 50 year old cruising sailboat. The ultimate goal is to replace the cutless bearing. Hope to find a good "how-to" video for that too 😁

Thanks. I did my own and the rudder had to come off for me to pull the shaft. If you have a yard with the right tool (strut pro tool) I would get them todo it. But they must have the right tool and not a slide hammer

You had it much easier than mine... although I have a bigger prop... I had so much tension on the prop puller before I heated it up with a propane torch, when it got hot it shot off the shaft and made a noise like a shot gun... glad I was on the side of the prop!

Standard puller technique is to: Wrap the arms so they can't slip off mid extraction, firmly tighten the puller hit the end of puller rod once hard, tighten again, repeat till pop. Heat is good but rarely needed.

Your prop nuts are on backwards. Thin nut first, large nut second. Torque the thin nut to about 50% torque value than that of the large nut.

How do you figure the torque value?

With a torque wrench or by feel.

Far more likely than a prop nick or two is a sloppy skeg bearing. Wobble the shaft up and down will tell you.

I just saw the end of the video. You may have to pull the prop shaft, and true it up. And, after 12 years it might be time to change all the seals in the prop shaft. Are you getting any leaks into the engine room?

I have ordered a new prop. We have a stuffing box and that has been fine. I thought I would see if the new prop fixes the low rpm vibration. If it doesn’t, realign the engine and check the engine mounts. If it still doesn’t solve the issue pull the shaft next year and have it checked and do the cutlass bearing. What do you think?

@@Aboardsecondwind That sounds like the right oder. From the looks of the prop damage, I would think that the prop shaft would be the issue. It would need to be removed and made straight. (True). But, you're correct, it could also be that the engine mounts are not aligned properly.
