The Music from the second Stage has been burned into my mind.. as that was the stage I certainly died the most.. I eventually finished it thought after much memorization.. one of the hardest games i have played, and i have played and mastered the likes most Gradius titles and the R-type series and that is saying something.. Impressive play through..

22:12-22:24 Even with full powerups the game demands perfect manouvers through a giant mess of bullets for 12 seconds. You can tell that because this was made for arcade there was no system to check if someone could actually do the levels with anything like a reasonable amount of effort.

Ive never played Ikaruga but Pulstar is definitely harder than Gradius 3, at least on default difficulty. If you include higher difficulties I cant imagine any game harder than Pulstar difficulty 8.

Most players would be grateful just to 1CC this game, but you no deathed it...that's MAD SKILLZ! I have this game on Nintendo Switch, and I'm stuck on Stage 5! This game is like a puzzle in that you really need to figure out where to move and when, and which enemies to shoot first. I also noticed it has a rank system that increases bullets and enemy attack patterns when fully powered up. Thankfully the checkpoints are pretty generous, and in the ACA release, you can create a save state anytime so you don't have to restart on Stage 4 if you make it beyond that.

It's kind of janky how the stage conclusion music gets cut off shortly after the score is tallied and the ship takes off, especially because it's so catchy. I'm assuming that's in all the original MVS/AES carts and it's just a minor oversight. Not to rag on an overall awesome game and thanks for the 60fps upload.

I was literally thinking what is the difference? I just purchased BlazingStar on the switch and I was debating getting this or Last Resort bc the ships and weaponry are so alike and I didn’t want to purchase the same game different titles two more times. I’m torn :/

Oh I never noticed that before. In the top score table the players are Japanese cars. Z32 is the Nissan 300ZX. R32 is the Nissan Skyline. FD3 is the Mazda RX7, and JZA(80) is the Toyota Supra.

It’s a checkpoint shooter, and you lose all your power ups. This one is a monster once that happens in later levels, it makes the game exponentially more difficult.

There was this two player horizontal SHMUP sit down game, released between 1988 to 1992, similar to Pulstar, that for the life of me I cannot find (in terms of the name ,a youtube/FB video or online game play). I know for sure It is NOT the following: Gradius any version thunder force any version air busters E.D.F. Salamander Mega Blast Hyperduel cosmic cop bioship paladin Rezon, space fortress, macross II Last Resort Metal Black Terra Force R-Type any version From what I can recall from memory, there are is some Metal Black, Zero Wing, Gradius and Terra Force (but without switching to vertical shooter) features but I cannot remember the F***ing name. Only memory is it was a two player game, wide screen and some volcanic activity devastation on the later stages. The one time I was at this arcade, the game operator was working on it and he happened to be cleaning the laser disk system associated with this sit down cabinet machine. I realize there a shit tons of Horizontal games that I have yet to review....Any suggestions please share.

The artists will create a proper 3D model of the ships, but they produce 2D images (renderings) of the model, including animations - everything has been pre-calculated; the console is just displaying the final output 🙂 Donkey Kong Country, Crusader: No Remorse and Killer Instinct all use pre-rendered graphics 🙂

This looks like a really solid shmup but I'm just not a fan of those sometimes rendered visuals that have in places inevitably dated much worse than if they'd just used proper sprite art.

@Mr g It doesn't look like it to me. It looks they might have used a similar technique to Donkey Country at times, where they rendered the visuals on some 3D computer first and then output them as 2D images and slightly touched them up by hand. Certainly I think some of visuals look like they were done this way. And if they weren't done this way then they suffer similarly as they would if they were.
