Train track is made of Technic Beams and is 9 studs wide and 2 studs high.

Maybe you could attach a BuWizz motor on the wheels, it seems like the buggy motor (which the BuWizz motor I’m referring to basically is) might be small enough

Connecting a motor to one of the axles is probably not so difficult. I actually tried to build a small device with arms that go up and down so it is actually working like real life. The arms device worked a little bit but not good enough to keep rolling on the track. It probably became too heavy. But it worked a little bit when it was already rolling down hill. If you understand what I mean haha

Can you make pneumatic locomotive?

In theory yes, but in practice it will be difficult I think. But I will try it for sure in future. But first I need to find larger 3D printed wheels because the 2695 wheel is too small for a classic steam locomotive. Can you print some wheels for me?

Are those tracks 8 studs wide?

Hi Gavin, the track is 9 studs wide and the trains are 11 studs wide. For a Technic vehicle you want an uneven number studs so the middle stud can be for a drive shaft. So for a train you have the middle stud and 5 studs on each side so total 11.
