It's Generation X immortalized in film. It wasn't ahead of it's time, it had it's finger on the pulse. Singles, Reality Bites, SFW, etc all tried and failed to be what this movie was and would eventually become..

It was sort of in that weird in between time period. The end of the 80s - the beginning of the 90s. The year or so that didn’t know what it wanted to be, the 80s has wound down, but the 90s had not yet sprung.

Thank you for this movie! I watched in 1994, on cable tv, when I was 22. I loved it because I'm shy and I've never been popular. I fell in love with Mark and I like the way Christian Slater looked in the 90's. Greetings from Chile!

My gf and I have a theory. Mark got out, and his family had to change their names and jobs. Mark became JD, and his dad went into construction. After moving around so many times, his mother killed herself. Feeling pissed that she did what he was too "cowardly" to do, he began to slip into madness. Didn't help that no one seemed to have gotten his message. Mr. I'm Serious's suicide gave him the inspiration for the murders. He did NOT kill himself. Instead, he knew he and his dad had to leave before he was arrested again for "manslaughter" then murder. So they then continued to move. Eventually, he became a writer, figuring it was finally the best way to get his message out. And then he chose the wrong interviewee.

By far one of my favorite movies centering on pirate radio. I have ran my own underground FM nearly 30 years and worked in the business commercially as well as a technical engineer. The whole plot of Mark being a pirate when actually what he was doing wasn't pirate radio. His home was by the school and that was where his signal was listenable the best. Part 15 operations limit unlicensed signals to around 300 feet although can vary significantly. The only time an antenna was shown was on the jeep and that was an old style cell phone antenna that wouldn't work for VHF. If he, theoretically was breaking the law, it would had been hard to prove especially during this period in time. Not exactly sure how other stations were receiving his very LPFM signal to re broadcast across state lines, but hey,--the magic of TV Hollywood can make anything possible even the possibility of Mark being capable of converting a AM shortwave radio transceiver into a LPFM transmitter. Working on actual broadcast exciters and transmitters, as an Engineer I yet to figure a way around that one.

Nirvana actually quoted a scene from this movie on "Territorial Pissings", in this movie and on that song they both sang a sarcastic rendition of "Get Together" by the Youngbloods as a testament to the generation gap and the difference in culture from the 60s to the 90s. The 90s turn the 60s upside down... literally 👻

Simply put...it is about radio piracy by a minor speaking the truths that syndicated stations wouldn't dare. It's a cult classic and definitely worth at least one viewing. Afterwards you'll probably be quoting Happy Harry Hard-on one liners daily. It is one of those films that sticks with you even through and over long periods of time. Give it your full attention and respect for being ahead of it's time, and possibly even glimpses of the future. I hope this helps you to explore this underrated film.

all I wanted was an FM transmitter. Make no bones about it.. I am a conservative in economics, national defense, and upholding/defending our Constitution. I'm also a 70s kid who grew up with Jimmy Carter as my President. The man, bless his heart, wanted to micro-manage everything and it was too much but he taught me to love and accept all. That includes every word ever created for every race, culture, religion, and adult sexual consensual preference. I am a modern Republican and in step with Republicans who wanted to free slaves 170 years ago. In step with Republicans under Reconstruction. In step with EVERY Republican vote against Jim Crow laws on the federal level successful but not on state level in the South. The democratic party controlled the South, created the KKK, and passed every Jim Crow law possible. What it took was a Yankee dem. to gain office.. be President to change things... a leader to enforce our Constitution and Civil rights. His brains were blown out in Dallas, Texas. LBJ signed the Civil Rights law with every Southern Democrat in opposition. All Facts. Martin Luther King Jr. was a registered Republican all his life... FACT and think about it. I have no prejudice against any no matter race, gender, or any who disagree/agree/oppose my sexuality... sit on my lap to agree or disagree. I promise it's only between us and no government involved. signed, Frank Gordon Stoeffler A Republican who supports Trump

5 Civil Rghts laws passed 1860s,1870s,1950s,1960s. All were passed by a supermajority of Republicans (the Dixiecrats voted no) They were signed by 2 GOP presidents, 1 democrat, and VETOED by a democrat (Johnson) Civil Right bills only passed because Republicans pushed them thru
