I've got the opposite problem with my Hopi Pale Gray squash in my greenhouse. I've had one female flower and that's it. I've been using the male flowers from it to pollinate my volunteer pumpkins in the garden to hopefully get something interesting next year from the seed.

@jbvincent47 That's one good thing out of the problem....if you save the seeds, it might end up with interesting crosses. I may do that as well, see what grows next year out of the seeds. 👍🏻😄

Found you on Noel’s channel…..if you have neighbours who grow pumpkins…..they might agree for you to take a male flower. Worth a try.

@gbltheolechurch5acrehomestead Good idea. Don't think I do, though. But good news, the male flowers started to open up, and now I have some. Just in the nick of time. Thanks 👍🏻

Others are saying the same....This is a crazy growing season this year...I planted sweet banana peppers...The first pepper was so perfect....The last 2 off the same plant have been fire engine hot....I never plant hot peppers because we do not like them...Think this is going to be a strange harvest this year...🤷‍♀️

@@dusttodusthomestead .....Daily average 106 degrees which is not Vermont normal....Its awful...My guys are lugging 100 pound concrete forms in this heat and humidity....Hubby is 62 years old....The garden is just weird....Potatoes and onions are doing the best so far....I did the Ruth Stout method for both.....Still the harvest will tell on me this I am sure...Its just not normal that's for sure....I also use electro culture for a boost....Shade covering too...🤷‍♀️

@annetteparker5276 wow, that is hot. That's way above normal I would think. We've been hovering around 100 every day, but suposed to cool off 10 degrees or so later this week. Hang in there. 🙏👍🏻

A lack of potassium, a macro-nutrient that drives plant functions, can affect blooming. Sun exposure: Pumpkin plants need at least 8 hours of full sun per day. Watering: Pumpkin plants need regular water, especially during the summer when they may need 1-1.5 inches (2.5-4 cm) per week. Space: Pumpkin vines need plenty of space to grow and branch out. Also the high heat above 95 degrees is a factor!

@dusttodusthomestead I have mine in direct sunlight at least 6 hours a day unfiltered and probably could use more! I have mine outside my greenhouse in 20 gallon grow bags! I also use Jack's 20-10-20 water soluble fertilizer!

@@patwatersvlogs859 that sounds good. 20 gallon grow bags. Interesting. 👍🏻 Did you say you were growing the big max? Or?
@patwatersvlogs859
@patwatersvlogs859 2 ай бұрын
@dusttodusthomestead yes the big max I make my own soil blend as well it's like 17 different minerals and nutrients plus sphagnum peat moss and perlite and coco coir took me a while to figure it all out but works amazing on any plant plus I use it for my starter seeds as well! I'll share if you'd like my email is on my profile here on KZbin!

just curious what do you do with your pumpkins
@dusttodusthomestead
@dusttodusthomestead 2 ай бұрын
@sherryhumphrey3868 not much. Last year, I fed them to my pigs half the winter. We do make some pies and breads with some of them, though. We also used them as general fall decorations. We have a harvest party every year and they are used to decorate that as well. We don't participate in any Halloween traditions and don't use them for that. As far as the giant pumkins go, I just want to grow one for fun. Never have got a big one yet, but it's fun to try.

@patwatersvlogs859

I'm thinking the problem is more sunlight! How much sunlight do you get in the greenhouse? My greenhouse roof cover is a clear mesh tarp 14 mil which let's enough sun in for any plant!
@dusttodusthomestead
@dusttodusthomestead 2 ай бұрын
@patwatersvlogs859 It gets pretty good sunlight, but I do have that landscaping fabric on about 50% of greenhouse. Maybe I should trim some leaves back at some of the male flowers to provide more sunlight? What do you think?
@patwatersvlogs859
@patwatersvlogs859 2 ай бұрын
@@dusttodusthomesteadyou shouldn't trim pumpkin leaves or vines before the fruit ripens because it can reduce the plant's energy. If the plant is producing new green shoots, which can use a lot of energy and interfere with fruit production, you can trim them!
@dusttodusthomestead

@@patwatersvlogs859 right. Maybe I can just "pin" them back a bit to let more sunlight in?
@patwatersvlogs859
@patwatersvlogs859 2 ай бұрын
@dusttodusthomestead I'd sooner pin them back and see what happens in the next few days and if nothing I'd hit them with some nutrients for sure and a possible second watering! I'm watering twice a day but is been over 100 degrees here for a while so I give them an extra dose at night for the last month now I'm starting to see some action finally got some tomatoes on the vine they went into survival mode and would just drop flowers the heat had them in bad shape!
