True Hawaiian, when asked to play a foreign song he chose to stick to his roots and play and sing of a lava flow, the land, and the ocean...Most importantly though he chose to sing of the area of which he was born and raised...I never knew this man but I truly know his spirit, mahalo Puna for your music, your mana'o, and your life,.....RIP

oh how i miss Puna...spent many many nights listening to him play/sing & watching him dance, the 1st time i met him i fell in love w/ him he had such a HUGE BEAUTIFUL ENERGY that RADIATED MILES AROUND HIM, he used to play Mondays nites w/ Kawika at a dive bar in town called Punatics, i went EVERY Monday it was MY CHURCH! oh how i miss that time and all the nights on the Seaview lawn filled w/ song/dance & laughter ...he was at home (Uncle Roberts on a Wendsday night) singing & dancing when he had a heart attack & died , he died doing what he loved & where he was loved at home surrounded by family/friends....i had just left about 15 minutes before it happened...so heart breaking....EVERYONE LOVED Puna!! & i mean EVERYONE, his funeral was a HUGE turnout & lasted a few days he was layed to rest in his family land & had a send out of a King, he had the most beautiful casket, it was made out of Koa/Mango & other exotic woods, on the casket lid was a beautiful carved ukuele so when the casket was closed that is what he would be looking at...Kalapana has never been as bright since he has been gone....side note this interviewer is awful very disrespect you never ask another Hawaiian to sing IZ, she was very annoying w/ her ignorance

I had the honor of dancing hula with Puna as one of our musicians. I'm haole girl and from the first time meeting he was always sweet and kind to me. He played for us at competitions and just knowing that he was there playing WITH us gave so much Hawaiian energy! A big mahalo to you Puna. We still miss your music. Your heart was huge and all about "being Hawaiian."

I absolutely love his humbleness! His music was absolutely beautiful and uplifting. So much so that I began to cry. It was as if all of the negativity was being completely washed away through his music. Thank You Puna and Lilou!

Mahalo Lilou for capturing a soulful moment with Puna. This video will be a part of his lasting legacy which is his love for culture, people and his music. Put it all together and you get PUNA Aloha! I will miss him like the throngs of friends, fans and family but am comforted that his music remains with us. My wish is for some aspiring artist to record "Kupaianaha Opuao" to honor him and the place... the aina where his spirit remains. Mahalo Lilou' for preserving Puna's music and memory.

A beautiful, humble man with a gorgeous major 7th playing style and sweet voice on Hawaiian classics. An unusual 6 string uke. I feel sorry that I never made it down to see him.

We went down to see the lava flowing on the hillside near uncle's kava bar . The huge pool of Lava was a sight to see in the dark , but the best gift of all was Puna's voice wafting through the darkness across the lava to greet us . Thank you Puna you and your family are such a gift for all of us that come to the Kava bar every week. Mahalo nui loa Sasha
