PUNARVASU NAKSHATRA
Now we come to Punarvasu Nakshatra, the "Return of the good". See the manual for all the details, some of which are reproduced here.
“The restoration of good [punarvasu] for aditi (The Undivided) is wind [vātaḥ] from above and moisture [ārdram] from below.”
Punarvasu is a Sanskrit word that means “the restoration of the good”, but has many layers of meaning that should be contemplated. Its helpful to break this word down. Punar can mean “once again” or like how we put “re” in front of a word to indicate doing it again, in Sanskrit punar means the same thing. Vasu means many things but refers to light and shining, radiance. Vasu means “excellent, good, beneficient, sweet, dry, anything that shines, or any desirable, precious object. Vasu refers to any riches, wealth, goods, gold, jewels, gems, or property. Vasu is also a name for the Gods that rule Dhanishta nakshatra, which is also a nakshatra that gives a lot of wealth, radiance, and desirable, shining qualities to a person. Vasu comes from the vedic root “vas” which means “to shine” or “to grow bright” and refers to the dawn. Vasu can thus mean anything that exists that is desirable, or anything that exists and is perceivable or shines and grows bright like the rising sun. It can refer to a person too, not just an object, but anything. So it is about the return of the bright perceivable and desirable thing.
Punarvasu together means the return of the light, or the return of the good. It can also mean the return of the goods, as in the sense of valuables. At Ardra, we had the destruction and purifying storm of Rudra. Now the energy is cleansed and ripe for the the return of the excellent, precious, desirable thing. Thats what punarvasu represents. As such, this can be a great star for when one needs to select a muhurta to do something that involves renewal, rejuvenation, or returning something to its previous splendor.
Wind and Moisture do bring fresh, new energy and life into creation, so it makes sense that this star would correlate to that.
The symbol is a bow, or a house. It is said to have a bow symbol because a bow can spread out and is moving and unsteady like this asterism, and the infinite nature of Aditi. A bow is also something that is returned back to its place after it is shot. But the problem is the next asterism is also symbolized as an arrow, and then we also have Sagittarius, the bow sign already, so I feel the bow symbol is a bit overused, and may be an embellishment. Pushya if anything makes more sense for the bow and arrow nakshatra, as we will describe later.
The symbol of a house seems to be the more vivid picture of punarvasu. If you look at Punarvasu in the sky, it is the stars Castor and Pollux. These stars make up a square that looks just like a little house up in the heavens. A house and abode of the Mother goddess, Aditi. We will find that Punarvasu has a very nurturing, and restorative, rejuvenating energy. It does not have a strong warlike energy, or long term purposeful aiming quality that a bow and arrow would symbolize. Punarvasu is about returning back to the good and desirable thing. Thats what our Home is. The symbolism is very obvious. We go to work, we get beat up by life, working hard and exhausting ourselves. Then we leave our work, and seek the rejuvenation of our home. We “return again” to our home, just like what this star is named after. We go back to our home because it is the place the nourishes us. It is where (ideally) our Goddess literally lives in the form of our loving wife, if we are lucky enough to have one. Punarvasu is therefore THE nakshatra of finding a home, or returning back to home after a long journey, etc.

The meaning of the bow in punarvasu is to remind us of our home which is far in the sky, Aditi, which is air. The other limitless home are the primordial waters. From this air from above and moisture from below. Thanks for sharing.🙏

Yes very true. But the word used does not mean primordial waters, probably because thats more Shatabhishak and Uttara Bhadrapada's thing. It uses the word ardram which means moisture, freshness, perspiration, aliveness. Its punarvasu's job to create freshness, newness. I think that it is maybe a bit of a stretch to make that mean primordial waters in my opinion. It is not the definition of the word. But symbolism has multifaceted meanings, to each their own.

This is my Rising/ Sun and Mercury nakshatra. Rising and Sun are in the 4th Pada/ Cancer Rashi and Mercury is in the Gemini Rashi Pada 1. I relate to your comment about living abroad- I’m a nurse who moved away from my home country. And then I had Ketu go over my natal Ketu- where I was diagnosed with incurable blood cancer- such an overwhelming and seemingly impossible situation having to go through a stem cell transplant in a foreign country with little help and friends/ no family by my side when this happened. I was also in near complete acute kidney failure on the cusp of needing dialysis- things felt very bleak. But little by little my blood numbers became better- and my kidneys began working again- and I achieved remission with this beast of a blood cancer (which are holes in my bones as well- some becoming close to requiring surgical stabilization)… a year after this and my bones were healing and rebuilding. My hand has been forced away from direct bedside care but I’m seeking qualifications to become an educator of nurses now. I’m working to build back my life again. And I see the light and coming out of the tunnel. I think these are themes associated with Punarvasu.

Wow thats amazing! Also I can see a lot of the Cancer themes in that too, because its the sign of the blood, since the blood is like an ocean within our body.

My father's Nakshatra :)18:02 That makes a lot of sense. Because the earth is moving around the sun and on its own and so is other stars, nothing is fixed in space. So that would make a lot of sense that nakshatras are not fixed in one particular sign.

I have Moon in Punarvasu (Gemini) opposite to Saturn in Purva Ashadha (Sagittarius). Libra Ascendant. So, Moon is in the 9th house. Jupiter is conjunct Mars in Taurus, Krittika Nakshatra. Moon is my AmK and rules the 10th house from lagna. So, as Punarvasu means success after a great loss, I am experience something like that academically. I started a post-grad education before covid-19. Everything went wrong. I had serious health problems and I lost family members during the pandemic. I had to drop out of the course. Now, I have the chance to start my higher studies again. I hope it works.

Wow.. great insights! Really didn’t know about the house symbolism, I do think it resonates much more than the bow and arrow too. Can’t wait to watch what you have to say about the other nakshatras too! Thanks man.

The home: bow arrow significance is based of Ramayana. Please do listen to lectures by Dr. Arjun Pai and understand that the symbolisms are NOT embellished ones. They are rooted in mythology. Thank you.

I explain each symbol and its meaning and relevance in the full course of which this is only a small excerpt so please understand you are not getting the full lesson on it in this short video. The full classes on Punarvasu can be seen here eye-of-the-veda-university.teachable.com/p/nakshatras Ive met Dr. Pai and have talked with him about nakshatras, he is very knowledgeable. I love his videos on them, especially the one on Shatabhishak. Ive also read the ramayana and many puranas in full, and can read sanskrit in the original devanagari. You may be new to my channel but I am very into the mythology. So keep in mind this is just one of a 6 hour portion of the nakshatra course on just punarvasu alone, so please understand you are only hearing maybe 1/8th of what I have taught on this star. It is 6 hrs long for a reason. So all the symbols for it have meaning and relevance which I explain in the full course, but there was originally only one symbol for each star, so some of them had to be embellished at some point.

I have moon and Mars in punarvasu 2nd house in Gemini ♊. What does that mean to have these planets in punarvasu?
@EyeOfTheVeda
@EyeOfTheVeda Жыл бұрын
Its hard to say anything without looking at the whole chart, as I would not say anything about that placement alone in a reading, but in the context of the entire chart. Also I use tropical rashis so I would calculate your chart differently, and those grahas would fall in Cancer rashi. Moon in cancer is great for the feminine/goddess energy of Punarvasu that I described here, or maybe in part 2? I cant recall atm. Mars debilitated here is not ideal but it is delighted by the Moon which brings it up a lot. Without reading the other avasthas I would not want to say anything, and if I did, it would be about that placement alone, not about you since I dont know the rest of your chart. Does that make sense?
