Thanks Deana! Cost is why I gave up hooking for awhile. I was part of a guild and basically was told that only hand dyed wool fabric and yarn could be used. Anything else was not considered "real" rug hooking. I couldn't afford the supplies they had at meetings. Watching your videos and coffee and cocktail time have opened a new world for me!!! I am now creating again and loving it. Thank you, thank you!!!! See you at Bingo night :)

This is such a big problem in the world of crafting. I am a devotee of Red Heart Super Saver yarn because the range of colors (even though sometimes shrinking) is unparalleled, and it's washable. I am so glad to read that you have made your way back to your creative work.

I just started punch needling and your videos by far are the best for every level of crafter. I’ve learned so much from you and love the fact that you stress “it doesn’t need to be perfect, just have fun.” I used your idea of buying a multicolored skein and separating it into individual colors and am so happy! Cant wait to buy the Mandela and do the same. Thank you for all you share.

Hello from New Mexico USA. I use Blizzard Fleece, cut in the direction it doesn''t stretch for my noodles, to hook with. I know it is polyester, but as long as you don't iron it, it won't melt and look's awesome. I hook desert Landscapes 4 feet by 6 feet on Monks Cloth with it. The fleece comes in dozens of colors. Just an alternative for those of us that are allergic to wool. Happy Hollydays, Petra

What a phenomenal educator you are! I can’t bear the thought of buying anything based on the fossil fuel industry and also know what farmers go through to make wool. However, those are my biases and concerns and I have some flexibility in choices. I’m just starting to rug hook and punch so nothing I make will be a work of art in the short term and likely long term. I think I will mix acrylics with other natural products. My main need is to reduce spending on textiles. I love it all and enjoy designs from great artists and seem to think I need a stash and will be trashed at some point and an even greater environmental problem. I’m the problem. Anyway, thank you for your wonderful explanations and explorations! You have saved me so much time with your great explanation of just use scissors and cut it if it gets tangled. And about the direction. I do that and get so frustrated as an inexperienced spinner when the wheel goes in the wrong direction. You handle those situations with Grace!! Thank you!

I come from the world of needlework so I have tubs of wool crewel yarn. It is 3 ply. I am using all three plies for my punch hooking. Since they aren't twisted together the appearance does tend to look curlier but I like this look. Although I haven't tried it, I think that one or two ply ply of crewel yarn would fit an ultra punch or fine needle. : )

I’ve just found you, and love your videos. You are wonderful to listen to, and are a marvelous teacher. So glad you chose to experiment with these yarns. As a beginner in the world of hooking and punching (experienced at cross stitching, wool appliqué, and quilting), using these fibers would be a great way to learn before choosing to invest in more expensive fibers (should one wish to). I love that little fun projects can come out of ALL of those colors!

A dear friend, who introduced me to rug hooking, started hooking because her husband didn’t want to spend money on rugs…but he didn’t mind her hooking rugs, and she made some amazing, huge rugs and her house was full of them…she used to comment that he would probably die if he knew how much her “hooked” rugs actually cost 😮😂

I'm a crocheter and I've used tons of Mandala yarn over the years. I used it for a temperature blanket five years ago because of all the colors you got. It used to be made in Turkey and there was a big drop in quality when they started making it in China so I quit buying it. I still have some so I'll try it for hooking.

Hello again from State of Mo. I have used the yard with the Oxford fine punch needle. I tried using the "little rubber cut off piece" from the face mask - ear section - looks like a little small barrel and put if over the needle area - push down all the way to the wood and pull out the tail-end of yarn out before punching. It actually works in making the loop smaller on you monk's cloth/or other type of fabric. By using the "little barrel piece" the face mask becomes bigger on face - not so pushed into your face. Please try and let me know your thoughts.

I need to go back and watch some of your other videos to get caught up on punch needle. I have a bunch of stuff to do it, just have been scared to pull the trigger! LoL!! I have a TON of skeins of precious sock wool I got at the Goodwill outlet/bins store! Thinking I could use it to punch rugs? I got my feet wet with wool hooked rugs…but think I’m making this whole punch needle too difficult in my head. Excited for your videos! And-your cute sweatshirt!!?…did you cut the arms and hood off a hoody? It looks so cute! If you did, did you cut the band off on the bottom? I’m always trying to figure out how to make a mens T or sweatshirt a little more updated-feminine/fun! Thank you so much!!! You’re a lot of fun! So glad I found you and am a new subscriber!

Just found your video and was very interested in your use of Monks cloth. When I was doing Swedish weaving we used a monks cloth but it could never be used for punch needle. It had threads going up and down and across to make squares. I was always told to use weavers cloth. Can you tell me the difference between what you call monks cloth and what I know is monks cloth.

Hi Savannah. My name is Jane Davies and I'm helping Deana out with some admin. I've checked with Deana and she said the following - "There are 2 products called monks cloth but the one used for cross stitch and needlecrafts has no stretch, so it makes it completely unusable and unsuitable for rug making. The weave of the needlecraft/embroidery monks cloth is also far too tight a weave to use for rug hooking compared to rug hooking monks cloth". I hope this answers your question 🙂

@RibbonCandyHooking
@RibbonCandyHooking 2 жыл бұрын
no, Sarah - that monk's cloth looks the same but it's meant for cross stitch and needle crafts. It's ridiculous that there would be multiple fabrics called 'monk's cloth' but the monk's cloth for rug hooking is 100% cotton and stretches a little. It has to be for rug hooking specifically becuase the box store stuff is the wrong kind and will just upset and frustrate you! xx

The needle is too narrow. It shouldn't snag at all... So frustrating. I'm not😢TV self promoting, but I spent a lot of time ordering punches from all over the place and I ended up stocking the one on the link I'm putting here. I like to punch with acrylic yarns from the craft store, and I use this punch. It's inexpensive but it's just what you need... www.ribboncandyhooking.com/products/worsted-weight-punch-needle

The #3 or DK is considered a medium weight yarn. I would be careful of the #4 or worsted weight yarns because they are not all made the same. Some are thicker than others. Some are loosely woven or twisted and so can be compressed easily. Others are tight and can't be compressed. And a lot depends on the materials the yarn is made of. So some may be more "slippery" than others and slide through the needle easily. So look at the yarn specifics carefully.
