Sabnavis ji, Glad to read your replies. Wow, you met Swaraj ji. I love hearing a Saxophone and marvel at people who play it. The instrument itself looks so royal, classy and delicate. I am a usa nri now living retired in bhopal. I cant play instruments but I sing old hind songs, especially 60s. I am trying to learn that sampada jis "patented" alaap in this video, some success, it gives me enormous pleasure. I figure the REED is a small part that fits somewhere in the mouthpiece of the Saxophone. Ajay Johary.

That aalaap at beginning from 0.44 to 1.47, 63 seconds long, is soooo beautiful. Other singers of this song on yt are not doing it. All respects to Sampadaji. Aside from fascinated, I got interested and did a 3hr research on this aalaap thing on google, saw many websites, all explanations were vague and murky including wikipedia. My version on Aalaap, more precisely: its necessarily vocal not instrumental, without words, humming with mouth closed or open, usually but not always at beginning of song, uses similar notes and simplified patterns as in the song proper, may be accompanied by one or very few instruments (here its guitar) that only provide a drone but not the notes, is rather SLOW, it introduces and sets the mood for the song proper to follow, it must necessarily be very very enjoyable, there is some room to experiment (improvise) by the singer not so rigid as an academician might want.
