Previously, lawmakers needed special permission to speak in any language other than English and Urdu, which was not always granted. This change, led by Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan, underscores the multilingual nature of the province and aims to improve communication and participation in legislative discussions.
The Speaker emphasized that incorporating regional languages into official proceedings demonstrates cultural respect and acknowledges the linguistic heritage of Punjab. This move is expected to strengthen the connection between the Assembly and the people it represents.
However, there is a controversy regarding whether Saraiki, Potohari, and Mewati are distinct languages or dialects of Punjabi. While speakers of these languages consider them separate, some hardcore Punjabi speakers view them as dialects. This ongoing debate highlights the complex nature of linguistic identity and classification in the region.
