Pupienus: *was a hardcore veteran, climbing from mere centurion to the imperial rank, has so much authority to just walk up to Thrax's army and order them back to their posts, celebrated as saviour from tyrant by every city in Italy, has a legit good idea to replace Praetorians with more loyal guard, loved by the Senate and the people* Meanwhile, back in Rome: Balbinus: "H-hey....P-p-retorians and you ordinary p-people.......maybe you should like.....um....s-stop killing each other and razing the city to the ground?......P-please???" Praetorians and people: "SHUT THE F UP BALBINUS! NO ONE ASKED YOU ANYTHING!"

Pretty accurate, but I believe Pupienus started as a Primus Pila Cenutrion - so probably came from a somewhat wealthy equestrian family, but he advanced through his own merit and ability to the highest position.
@revanius22132 жыл бұрын
Pupienus seems like he had the potential to be a capable Emperor, had he been a few decades younger or been Emperor in an earlier time he probably would have gone down as unremarkable but capable, unfortunately for him he was old and Emperor in the wrong time. Still seems like he did more than Balbinus.

I always thought that, aside from their weapons, the Praetorian equipment were all essentially just for show to flaunt their status as the emperors bodyguards. Can’t really back my belief up with a source, but if so, the germans would absolutely annihilate them.

@@nothisispatrick4644 By this time in Roman history? Very much yes, remember that they struggled with a just a Roman mob so they would have fared far worse against a battle hardened unit that had served on the front lines with at least two emperors. The old Praetorian Guards from back in the very late Republic and early Imperial era was the only one that would have had any chance because they were known to fight on the front lines like any other legion but as early as even the later Julio-Claudian dynasty they were just an over glorified police force.

Living during Hadrian's time must have been a bop as well. In addition to a time of great property and peace, Hadrian would travel around the Empire. So if you lived in one of the provinces which had specific problems, the emperor would be there himself at least at some point to deal with them.
