Helen, I'm 61 and after about a month of failing to pop up, I found this video last night. I did everything you advised including making a mantra, and I not only popped up but surfed my first wave to completion today!! I cannot tell you how thrilled I am and how much I want to thank you! My mantra is FEET (together), HANDS (by ribs), EYES (up), TWIST (foot between hands), SLIDE (hands back between legs in balanced squat), UP (to balanced position). I kept repeating that mantra as I practiced at home and on beach, and when the wave came, I fully committed and calmly followed the mantra to a wonderful position on the board as the wave's magical energy carried me! What a great feeling! Thanks again! Realy means a lot to me because I thought I was hopeless.

This is spot on. As a part time surf instructor I find all of these points excellent. Time and again I am telling students #5 - twist as you pop up. This gets them to hopefully achieve placing the front foot/knee under the chin and be well balanced. And it made me smile at #6 when you emphasized keeping those fingers on the board in that position before standing. It is one of the fundamental little things that can make a ride successful. Well done and I look forward to more of your videos!

Love your videos! I had my first lesson yesterday, and while I was able to stand up every time, I felt off balance and now I know why. I didn’t do the twist and was more goofy foot forward than sideways. Can’t wait to get out there again. Btw, I’ll be 50 this year. Yoga background has served me well. I’m hooked after one day. Um eeer guilty of rail grabbing a lot. The slow knee thing yep done but as you mentioned problems, my back. When done a normal pop have collapsed back down on board a few times due to long term lower back damage. Eyes as you say are most important, funny thing there is a thing called target fixation which in cars causes people to drive into trees.. Am currently having physiotherapy so hope will improve my surfing and my security at work.

Looking down and going down reminded me of ridding a motorcycle. Newbies look at the ground in front of them, terrified they're going to fall, and they will. The instructor always reminded us to look towards were you're going to go, and not towards where you don't want to go. So look ahead towards to where you want to go. Now, I have to remember this when I attempt to learn how to surf later this year. 😊

My problem is that when I try to catch the wave I have to have my feet off the end of the board or I’ll nose dive. It also means I can’t pop up properly. My board is a 7’8’ minimal.
@lawrencebutler70164 жыл бұрын
ive had this problem in the past, youve just got to pop up quick and turn down the wave asap (easier said than done i know), youre feet should not be hanging off the end of a nearly 8 ft board

Surfing like dancing when popping up. Beginners look at their feet beginning like surfers who look down to get steps right, but soon realize they dance better knowing what their feet are doing without looking down. Looking at your feet slows you down. Instead of the brain just telling the feet what to do, our brain is sending a signal to your feet then asking if that was right, before your next step. Realize your brain knows where your feet are without looking. If you're looking at your feet, you're not listening to the music. How can you dance unless you hear the music. You loose your rhythm. Hope this didn't sound too crazy.

You should stress that people that are super tight and have very little flexibility will have problems with their pop up. In addition if your hips, thighs and upper body are weak you will have problems with your pop up. It happens to some of the best surfers when they get into their mid 60's and beyond. There is so much more to the pop up than you went over. How many of your students can kneel on the board and put their butt on their heals like you do? Many cannot.

im a little confused a world renowned surfer say there is no pop up. you paddle till you feel momentum self sustaining then you come up smooth plant your front and drag your rear. as people who pop high risk burry nose under water dragging rear keeps weight distributed and forces you to keep small

@Hotwire_RCTrix4 жыл бұрын
Try a popup backwards, you maybe shock to find out its physically impossible for you. If you have large feet, inflexible ankles, long tibia/fibula, large calves... you need a different technique. One hand at your waist and the other under your shoulder. eg your last example to extreme. STIFF OLD CROCS CAN SURF TOO.
