The most wonderful of all Purcell's odes. What I would do to hear this live.

Very hearty thanks, Handel Purcell, for posting this magnificent performance; and that of the rendering in Westminster Abbey of 'Now Does the Glorious Day Appear'.It is very kind of you. Most of my life to date I have loved Purcell's Royal Birthday and Welcome odes; and consider it a great shame that nearly all of them went into eclipse and neglect for the better part of a quarter of a millennium before beginning to be revived in the middle of the last century. It is as if everyone had ignored Mozart's best operas since their first performance.'Welcome, welcome, glorious morn' is an ode which I am extra-specially partial to. I wish somebody would find the recording (if it still exists!) of the 1960's account of it by soloists with the Ambrosian Chorus and the English Chamber Orchestra conducted by Raymond Leppard. I have searched for it in vain. The unique interest of THAT rendering is that its tenor soloist, Gerald English, has a voice just like a trumpet and that superbly suits his solos in this piece. I remember hearing it on the BBC radio circa 1990 and they were electrifying. Yet Mark Padmore does them extremely well here. The whole repertoire of Purcell's Odes constitute a treasure-chest of gorgeous opulent music; so tuneful, so rhythmically interesting - such masterpieces of skill too. Very satisfying. It is great to see as well as hear them performed.Thank you again!

Nice to see and hear Padmore here at age 33. By comparison, Covey-Crump is 50 in this video and Bowman 53. A meeting of generations.

Lyrics for 5:48 to 6:37, courtesy of the pseudo-oratorio *Masque of Might*: Roll up your sleeves, there’s work to be done, a job to do for everyone. Regenerate the cells, and purify the wells; the forests must repair contaminated air. So nature’s miracle resumes its course, unleashing all its potent force. Mankind must learn to show respect, see every element connect. In a symphony of hope, the maggot and the sloth must play their vital part, the head joined with the heart. So spare us from the all-consuming rage that seems to curse this present age.

This was part of the tercentenary celebrations I think; I remember watching it whilst staying with a friend in darkest Wiltshire with snow on the ground. I love Michael George's voice.

Why mix the soprano and alto soloist,s names with those of some of the choral singers'?' Only Campbell sings a brief bass duet with Michael George (great pair of voices, though!).
