That’s a beautiful animal Cliff. Congratulations! I had to chuckle when you said West, Texas. Not just because there’s an entire region of Texas known as West Texas, but here in South Carolina there is a town called North. I ask this question as a person who is learning….. Is A-I ing cows less desirable than running a bull full time? I’m specifically asking as a person with limited acreage wanting to start a small herd of south polls. Thanks for any info you can pass along
@cliffhonnasregenerativerancher Жыл бұрын
AI isn’t less desirable as the end result (a calf) is still the same and you are feeding one less mouth (the bull). The issue is it takes time to check heat and determine when it’s time to AI the cow. That’s the drawback for me….limited extra time. Easier for me to let the bull do the work.

Thank you for the reply!

Look up mrna and what it affects in the offspring and how much is removed during semen collection -- new tech that finds cows in heat, prepares the semen, catches the female and inseminates multiples everyday.( BULL)

I watched a young guy that bred his Angus Heifers. And they produced some pretty black slick Calves. They kinda had the size of the Southpole but kept the black and they had the slick oily looking coat like a South Pole. I think you are heading in the right direction. I always wondered if the South Pole is so good on grass imagine if you gave them some grain or cake. Just a thought cause I think if you don’t give them any grain they don’t taste right to me. I tried it and I prefer grain finished.
@cliffhonnasregenerativerancher Жыл бұрын
Good points. Interestingly, we are in Australia currently and they sell their grass fed steers at 2.5 years of age. Very limited grain fed cattle here.
@tritchie6272 Жыл бұрын
From my understanding the whole purpose of the South Poll is to do good and finish on grass. From what I've watched of Greg Judy he likes them because they are very low input.
@charmainevandiford6622 Жыл бұрын
@@tritchie6272 I just watched a guy cross them with what he had. It’s is very costly to go find them and buy them and then get rid of what you have. He got a bull and put him to work and I even think he eventually did sell the cross and go full South Pole.
@tritchie6272 Жыл бұрын
@@charmainevandiford6622 Which seems like a completely different subject than buying a South Poll, only to give that South Poll grain.
@charmainevandiford6622 Жыл бұрын
@@tritchie6272 We tried the grass fed beef and maybe just the couple of times we tried it but it wasn’t as good to my family as the grain raised. That was the thought. We gave it a couple of tries and it just wasn’t as good. Most ranchers feed cows grass cause it’s the cheapest way but the ones they keep for themselves as butcher steers get finished with grain. Maybe the South Pole is different.

I'm curious too. He said that the two he sold were commercial bulls and his two new bulls are registered. I seem to remember one of his long term goals was to produce registered south polls as seed stock for other ranchers. That's just a guess though. Hopefully he will respond.
@cliffhonnasregenerativerancher2 жыл бұрын
Greg’s bull was not registered which means that I can’t register any of the calves that he sires. The new bull is a registered South Poll which means he is fully pedigreed where every ancestor is registered in the herdbook and shows the typical characteristics of the breed.

Currently, with the grass just starting to grow, I’m moving the entire herd into 35 acre pastures and leaving them in those pastures for only 4 days. My goal (until the grass hits a growth spurt) is to just graze the top of the grass and leave enough so that there is still enough leaf left to be a good solar panel which allows for fast regrowth. I will move them pasture to pasture until the grass is tall enough to sustain concentrated grazing so I can do smaller areas intensively. There are about 55 adult cattle and 20 or so calves.
