Nice idea! Thanks for sharing A couple of thoughts that may be helpful. You could use a clam cleat for holding tension on the rope if you decided to make a retracting mechanism. Also a stainless steel spring loaded plunger could be used to lock the pole in various positions if needed. The plunger could be operated remotely from your seated position via a .093 diameter weed eater line with appropriate hardware and associated pull handle. i.e. weed eater pull rope starter handle. It was hard to tell from your video how the unit attached to your NuCanoe. Also, how it would be removed and installed during transport operations.

Thanks. Retracting is easy, just pull on the handle. After using it, I realized there was no need to lock the pole in position; just shove it in to the bottom and it stays put. The wood bracket is bolted to a Minn Kota trolling motor mount. I slide it backward to remove it from the boat. Others will mount it in a different manner.

I found aluminum tube and even solid rod at a metal fabricators shop. They just ordered what ever length I need. A LOT cheaper than the big box stores. Just google for fab shops in your area. Love the fact that you took the time to make a full size wood prototype.Thanks for the video.

Thanks for the reply. I found that the big box stores did not have the shapes I needed. I wanted the round tube because I think it looks better. However, you could just as easily build it from square tube if you wish. But you are right, I was able to buy what I wanted and it was less expensive.

I just might borrow this idea for my bass boat. I would like to add a 12v actuator to deploy and retract. Looks great my hat's off to you sir!

That's really awesome! I wish there was a way to lower and raise it without having that long Handel next to you though. Great design

Thanks. I considered LOTS of different designs. This was the one that was a good balance of all the needs. Few designs allow you to push the pole down remotely. A solid handle was needed compared to a rope and pulley system that would stretch.

You did a great job... I have a non-related question... I noticed you sitting facing the rear of your (nucanoe??), anyway, I was wondering if you are just running your trolling motor in reverse or is there a way to rotate it around. Facing the motor would sure make it a lot easier. thanks..
@Frank77481247 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I run the motor in reverse, so the handle faces me the whole time. Depending on the speed of the current I can sometimes just briefly turn the motor on and off to correct a drift. Many times I stand in my NuCanoe, steering and drifting along; it is incredibly stable.

Yes, I have the same model (Frontier) and running the trolling motor facing forward, even with an extension, is sort of a pain. I think there may be a way to reverse the head on some motors. Again, nice invention. Good luck.

It is just a three drawer plastic box I bought at Target. Quarter inch painted plywood surrounds it on three sides. It also has some braces on the back corners and a frame around the bottom edges that connect the walls to the base. The base is two 2x4s. The rear 2x4 is used as my foot brace when paddling. I also screwed a section of aluminum yardstick on the top to measure fish.

anyone that goes out in kayak without a real anchor is asking for trouble. That pole will not anchor you in deeper water.
@Frank77481246 жыл бұрын
The pole holds my kayak steady in a moderate current in water 8-9 deep; the river I fish rarely gets deeper than that and is mostly much shallower. I had to cut the ropes on several "real anchors" because the anchors snagged on sunken trees, so anchors are not a viable solution. The pole will not dig in to a solid rock bottom but then a real anchor would slide across as well.

I use a an 8' fiberglass tree stake I bought from Amazon and added a "T" handle of PVC and an eyelet for attaching rope. I use it through my scupper hole and anchor in shallow water up to 7'. Here is a video of how I made it. Works great and not a lot of extra weight on the kayak and I can remove it or lay it down in my 14' kayak if not used. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003405FVW/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 kzbin.info/www/bejne/m2ebhWiBoLKhbck If fishing or traversing water deeper, I use my anchor which I bring with me on every trip regardless for safety. I have an attached quick release if the anchor gets snagged and can reset it for use right away again. Check out this review with a link to buy these from a guy in the U.K. It is by far better and easier than the small zip ties to break off and then you have to use more to re-secure. dizzybigfish.co.uk/review-of-anchor-trip-link-clip/

I previously used a stake out pole in the same manner and found it had its limitations (see the introduction and the video for that). That is why I moved to this design. Thanks for watching.
