If I could have only one hunting rifle for deer etc..., my choice would likely be the Ruger #1. Pure, simple, accurate, and great handling. This single shot Ruger #1 is beautifully made and very reliable, and affordable. I would be completely comfortable hunting with this full stock Ruger. Mostly you only need one shot anyway - come see how it shoots! You're probably wondering what caliber, this one is in .243, but I'll have to think about that :-)

Ruger #1 is still available . They release 3-4 variations and different chamberings per year. Ruger #3 carbines need to be brought back as well as 10/22 mag, 10/.357 and 10/.44 carbines. One of the best thing about break open and falling block actions IMHO is that ability to have full length 24-26 inch barrels in a short package . A bolt gun would have 16 -20 inch barrels at the same overall length .

I have a No1 Light Sporter in .270 Win. My favorite rifle and sometimes I take it from the safe just to admire the craftsmanship and beauty of it. The wood is amazing with much figure, checkering is well done and the wood to metal fit outstanding for a production grade rifle. I took my best buck whitetail with it a few years ago. A joy to carry on a hunt.

USOG, you have just become a dear friend. I know about your love of falling blocks and your work in creating one. But to be told that a Ruger No 1 would be your favorite rifle if you had to choose only one is an immense compliment to my judgment, coming from you. I am a Ruger No 1 afficionado -- I only have one in .308 and no other gun for any purpose, range or hunting field. They are awesome and so satisfying. You are a very knowledgeable firearm dealer and I watch almost all your videos (not those on handguns). Such an endorsement makes my Ruger No. 1 even more precious. (From Canada.) Keep teaching, please.

My friend, I'm so glad you own one - a superb rifle. For all the appeal of repeaters, I believe that nothing captures the essence of hunting better then a single shot; and the Ruger is an American great, a legendary rifle. The quiet stalk, patience, observation, the decision - and then the shot. Good health and good hunting.

Bravo for this choice. I have owned two of these, both the standard model with the 26 inch barrel. An underappreciated asset of these actions is that they are considerable shorter than a bolt action, which permits a longer barrel for the same overall length, for those wishing to extract maximum velocity out of a particular cartridge. My first one was a .243 with fabulous figure in the wood. I shot my first whitetail buck with it, and have always regretted selling it on. The second one, which I still own, is in .338 Win Mag. I bought it for hunting whitetails in close cover where they may be obscured by low bush, on the theory that "if you only have one shot, make it count". This works as intended, and the thing helped my collect the biggest whitetail of my life, AFTER the bullet had passed right through a four inch poplar that I did not see when I pulled the trigger. The thing is a bit of a brute on the shoulder, though, and I would happily trade it for one of the "light sporter style" in a less punishing calibre. These come with a 24 inch barrel, the quarter rib/front sight combination, and also feature a barrel band sling swivel base and the schnablle forend groove which can help to keep it from slipping out of your left hand. That has actually happened to me with the big .338. I see Ruger is currently offering these in ".275 Rigby" (actually 7 X 57), which would be about as sweet a deer rifle as a person could wish for.

I went hunting in the Czech Republic in the 90s with a Ruger No. 1 with Mannlicher stock and 20" barrel and caliber 7x57mm. I shot a roe buck there at 180 m. 7x57 is a good hunting cartridge. I greatly admire their fine, classic looks, ruggedness, and utter reliability and simplicity. I'd love to have one in 444 Marlin, but doubt if Ruger will ever offer that. If I do my part, they are all capable of groups around 1" @ 100 yards; the 25-06 maybe a bit better around 3/4". Bill Ruger definitely had a knack about gauging public opinion accurately.

Thanks for a great video on a great rifle. I would have to agree with you. I have a Ruger #1 RSI "International" in 7x57 Mauser. Such a great rifle! While my #1 deer rifle has always been a Savage Model 99 in .300 Savage, the Ruger is even more delightful to carry and certainly as adequate for the same game as the .300 Savage. I love the full stock rifles. I bought three of the Ruger Model 77 RSI full stock rifles. 2 in .243 and 1 in .250 Savage for my sons' first deer rifles. They are all still in use. I had bought one for each of two sons and one for me, and then, oops, I ended up having a 3rd son. 🤷‍♂ So he got the Model 77 RSI .250 Savage and I kept the Ruger #1. FWIW I also have a Ruger #1 "Sporter" in .30-06 and a Ruger Model 77R in .30-06. The Ruger #1s and 77s are great rifles and a great value.

@@UnitedStatesOfGuns They were "obtanium" when I bought them. I bought the 3 Model 77RSI rifles at the same time and wanted to get 3 identical .243 rifles but the gun shop only had two...and the .250 Savage. I kept the .250 Savage for myself because I knew that .243 ammo was easier to get, and I handload so the ammo is never a problem for me. Well, then my other son came along and he got the .250 Savage. I keep him stocked with ammo if he can't find it. I ordered the #1 RSI in 7x57 as soon as I saw they were making them. I always kind of liked that cartridge. FWIW, another cartridge I always admired is the .303 British. I would love to add a Winchester Model 1895 in .303 British to my collection.

I agree fully, my 1A is in 7X57 and is just a joy to hunt with. However, it is very selective about the ammunition that gives the best accuracy. I have read that there was a period in the manufacturing of No.1's when the barrels gave poor accuracy and they actually changed out some of the Ruger barrels with Douglas. My only other gripe is the effort it takes to eject a shell and re-cock the firing mechanism. I've always wondered if a good gunsmith could adjust the cocking spring and other parts in order to make it function with a little less effort.
@UnitedStatesOfGuns
@UnitedStatesOfGuns Жыл бұрын
Interesting post - I heard something about the barrels - but never having had an accuracy problem I didn't study it much. The cocking is interesting - I suppose a cam could be worked into the equation. Glad you have the perfect cartridge for the #1 IMHO

None other than Jack O'connor used and raved about the 7X57. Craig Boddington and Jim Carmichael also used and wrote about it. Yet the ammo manufacturers have never given it much attention. Hornady did offer the 140 gr Superformance but has since discontinued it. Worse, here in California they required lead free bullets for hunting, try to find those today. For years I handloaded for it but had to give it up when the prices of components went up. Cheers@@UnitedStatesOfGuns

RE: .243 WCF cartridge. When I decided to buy "first" hunting rifles for my sons, I chose the .243 cartridge for them. They began deer hunting when they were about 12 years old, so a light recoiling, and lightweight, rifle was desired. We hunted on my family's ranch in central Texas, so the deer weren't large. The .243 was extremely popular at the time (1980s) in Texas for deer. Each of my sons have killed many deer with their rifles, and if it ever took more than one shot, it wasn't the cartridge's fault. My personal favorite "deer rifle" cartridge is the .300 Savage, (7 x 57 Mauser is a very close 2nd) and I think it is better than the .243 when all types of deer and hunting conditions are considered, but the .243 is an excellent deer cartridge at normal ranges in normal conditions. I always loaded the rifles with 100 gr. bullets. I would not hesitate to use the .243 for larger bodied deer, mule deer, antelope, etc.

I had a brief love affair with a light sporter.243, but my other girlfriends wouldn't let me keep her citing "she's just a one shooter." From the snowy title page ,I was ready to chide you about the scope not matching the rifle finish, since you did say "perfection", but you must have sensed my concern and took it off for the video. You are the man, Sir. I really enjoy your videos.

I've hunted with a single shot for eons. Never needed a second shot. I have to laugh at those blokes who think you need an AR-15 to kill babies. The Number 1 is something I might consider trading my firstborn for. Thanks for the vid.

The AR 15 is so that the civil population can make war on abusive "leaders," but it serves secondarily as a highly versatile hunting and target tool.

I have this rifle chambered in 6.5x55 Swede and stainless steel with a walnut stock. I also have a Leupold 2-7x33 scope and Warne Q.D. rings that are specifically designed for the No. 1. They were ordered through Lipsey's and I purchased mine in 2018.

I have always liked the singleshot rifles. The Ruger No 1, Sharps, Trapdoors, growing up with a family of riflemen who never put more than one cartridge in a rifle even if it held more than 1. If I had to pick a caliber, probably .308 or 7mm-08. My deer hunting is usually less than 200 meters. Maybe a 7mm. My brother hunted deer for years with a No 1 in 7mm Mag. I hunt now with a bolt rifle in .243, haven't had a broblem yet, I stick to the heaviest projectiles and handload. I would be okay with the .243, and you are correct, the full length stock makes your rifle a very fine looking rifle. Thanks for sharing this rifle.

I went hunting in the Czech Republic in the 90s with a Ruger No. 1 with Mannlicher stock and 20" barrel and caliber 7x57mm. I shot a roe buck there at 180 m. 7x57 is a good hunting cartridge. I also had a pre-war Mauser in 7x57 (1937). I am a German from Franconia and now live in Thailand.

Hello - I remember you : ) Always nice to see a note from you. I see that it is 34C in Thailand - that's warm! I did some work in KL and visited Thailand - amazing. Went to a place called Penang/Butterworth - along the way - still in Malaysia though - from memory. Actually - lots of memories. Such a different part of the world; yet everyone sleeps just the same around the world - maybe at different times : ) Anyway, the 7x57 is tops and you had great hunts! Stay well my friend and keep in touch.

Wow! I rushed to be smart and say that my (not dream rifle, for me that can only be a o/u or sxs shotgun) perfect rifle would be a Mauser 98 in 7x57 cal, but I see that the caliber is already mentioned 3 times in the coments!😊😊😊😊. Being from Europe, falling blocks are not well known to me...cheers from Serbia!

I have one - not stocked to the muzzle like yours - and in .25-06, with a 3.5-10X Leupold scope, that is very, very sweet to shoot. Beautiful wood - absolutely gorgeous. I always thought that a #1 in .375 H&H, stocked to the muzzle like yours, with a long eye relief scope, great wood and a Mag-Na-Ported muzzle behind the cap would be a worthwhile addition. The nice thing about the .375 is that it can be loaded way down for plinking, deer and smaller game, etc. but can respond to just about anything Africa throws at it when needed. Of course, you have to reload a .375 - at $7 to $10 retail per round - but after the first buy for the brass, it's like any other weapon of its class. It uses big bullets, and lots of powder - but at least not at retail prices like that. On the other hand, you always pay for what you get. Nice gun; thanks for the video!

My favorite stalking rifle, a Ruger #1 RSI in 30-06. Loading 220 grain copy of the Hornady International for the big stuff and 185 grain gas check cast for Whitetail and if I'm where I can take a grouse or other small game a 100 gr. 30 cal. carbine bullet over a case full of Trail Boss or a few grains of Red Dot. RJ Renner can convert any of the long barrels to a full stock. It's a bit pricy but they're really nice.
@UnitedStatesOfGuns
@UnitedStatesOfGuns 25 күн бұрын
You've got it right! And Renner is fantastic! I like your 220 grain load - I hunted mule deer in the Rockies with a #1 and Imperial 220s - pretty sure 220 I don't have the box or any left - and results were outstanding. Everything falls down.

Great choice; I chose the Ruger because I know them so well and Bill did an amazing thing in this day and age - designing and bringing such a timeless design to market - and successfully; and the "British" lines are lovely IMHO. The B-78 in 25-06 or any caliber, is another great. Thanks for the note.

Thank you for sharing. I shot my first deer over 45 years ago with a No. 1 in 30-06. Years later I traded that rifle for a No. 1 in 45-70, which I still have. My only complaint about the design is the scope mounting. With regular rings and today's optics, the scope is mounted so far forward that I must move my head forward to an uncomfortable position to get proper eye relief. I have an old Weaver K3 on my 45-70 and I'm able to mount it back far enough in the rings to get proper eye relief. I'm told another option would be a Leupold VX-Freedom 1.5-4x28mm Riflescope. With it's 6 inches of eye relief it should be ideal for the No. 1. BTW... My No.1 in 45-70 will be the last centerfire rifle I would sell.
