Nice video. Bike sounds awesome! Practice rev matching as you down shift to help you slow down. Also, practice using your rear brake so you don't have to rely or use your front brake until you're almost at a full stop. Think of it as though your front brakes are out and you can only use your rear. This will help you control your bike and speed but most importantly it will help you break the habit of hammering the front brakes unless you absolutely have to.

@@nabutani When I just got my 883 I was craving that signature HD potato sound so much, I was choking the engine trying to cruise around at 1700-1900 RPMs. It took some time to get a feeling for the power/torque band and now I rarely go below 2700 and trying to stay closer to the maximum torque levels in the corners at 3300. Letting that v-twin sing away while exiting the corners took some time to get accustomed to, but now it's my favorite. Just curious how you've approached it from the other end a bit, but nothing critical. Enjoy the ride!

Yeah, taching that motor to death ! It's a 'LOW RPM' motor. Can't you feel that ? Better off to just go back to 'Ricky racer' bikes, and quit killin' that Sportster. I'm amazed you can't 'Feel' that motor is dying with the way you're revving it constantly. It hurts just watching and listening to you doin' it on the video. You'll need to rebuild it in no time at all.
@nabutani
@nabutani Жыл бұрын
Yeah I think I’ll stick to this Harley, we all had to crawl before we walked! I ride it way better now thanks to the advice of my subscribers. So I think I’ll keep Ricky Racer for someone else.
@clintwoodruff1187
@clintwoodruff1187 Жыл бұрын
@@nabutani - Ha, ha, ha ! OK, Nabutani. You make a good point... "we crawl before we walk". Maybe I've been a little hard on you. My apologies. This sometimes happens when we get old. I started riding Sportsters 50 years ago. At one time or another, I've worn out or broken every part in them, and had to rebuild them over and over. Why? Because as you said, I was crawling, and 'learning' to walk. You seem like a good natured fellow, so I'll stay off of your back. But to learn a completely different kind of motor, takes some time. And I can tell from this video that you still are trying to figure this motor out, as you are still taching very high rpm's at times. So here's something that may help you in your learning process of this new motor, so that you get good engine life, and save on your repair bills... I think if you can afford it, you may enjoy a 'tachometer. ' That will help you keep an eye on how high your rpm's are. If you can see that, I think you might start shifting sooner, and not 'holding' the revs so high in each gear. See the 'Red line' on your motor is about 5500 rpm's. So if you can see you're holding it at 3/4's of that, let's say, you'll be more likely to go ahead and shift sooner. After all, the beauty in your Harley motor is that it makes a LOT of torque at lower rpm's. So you can go just as fast by shifting it at lower rpm's. EXCEPT if you are 'racing' with somebody, of course ! Now I don't recommend that on the street, because there are too many people who will pull out in front of you, and you'll be in a 'cast' for a very long time... Or dead ! But for your everyday driving around, keeping your motor at an RPM that it likes insures long engine life, and a cheaper riding experience. With your particular bars, there may not be room for a tach and speedo there. But there are other ways to deal with that, while keeping your cool bars. Some people are moving the speedo down and to the left side. There are even brackets you can buy for that transition. That leaves a space on your bars for the tach, right there in front of you where you need it. Or there are speedo and tach combo's with analog tachs and digital speedos built into one. (spell that 'big money') Just some ideas, Nabutani. I'm not trying to tell you how to do your bike, that's up to you. Just giving you some things to think about. I remember when I was still crawling before I could walk in the world of Harley Davidson. Thanks for reminding me. And again, I apologize.
@nabutani
@nabutani Жыл бұрын
This was a thoughtful and wonderful response, thank you haha! So what RPM range is good to keep the sportster in? I’m defo gonna look into to getting a tachometer. You have gave me quite a lot to think about thank you! I know this information will help me greatly. This a whole new type of bike for me but I’m loving every second of it. It has different raw kinda feeling to it! I can’t quite put my finger on it.
@clintwoodruff1187
@clintwoodruff1187 Жыл бұрын
@@nabutani - I'm trying to figure a way to explain this without using numbers, since you don't have a tach yet. I hope I can give you something that helps. Try taking it up to around 60 or 65 mph, (in 5th gear) a good cruising speed, and listen carefully to the sound of your motor. Now try shifting most of the time around the same 'sounding rpm' s'. Rather than taking it up a lot higher, 'and holding it there', as you continue down the street. Your motor, though it will turn higher rpm's doesn't really 'like' being just 'held there' at higher rpm's, while you continue down the street. Better to go ahead and shift, and you'll immediately notice how your motor seems to 'relax' at the lower rpm's. (remember, there's really no 'set way' to describe this , as many people drive differently) But the key thing I hope to help you understand is to listen to your motor, seeking a 'relaxed' sounding rpm, when the motor is not working really hard. The more you pay attention to that, the closer you'll get to actually 'feeling your motor', when it's happy. And a happy motor won't be getting overly hot, and, or vibrating the thing apart. If driven this way, will give you countless thousands more miles of riding pleasure between rebuilds. And a nice side effect, is you'll find yourself 'cruising' the bike more than 'racing' around, and probably Living much longer. I know, I remember, when you're young, it's hard to keep your speed down. But if you master just 'cruising' your motorcycle, the benefits are endless, while the problems of 'racing around' are sometimes fatal, always expensive, and never give the girls a chance to see how cool you are when you are 'flying by'. Again, your motor doesn't mind being brought up through the rpm's so much, as it hates being just held there as you go down the street. Go ahead and shift her at around, let's say normally, 3000 /3500 rpm's, give or take a little. This is just a guideline to attempt getting used to feeling your motor in a relaxed state of operation. If of course, when you are gaining speed to enter a 'highway', you want to crank her on up... but don't crank it up to high rpm's and just 'hold it there'. Shift that puppy, and let her relax at the speed you choose to cruise her. I hope somehow this has given you 'some idea' of a better way to get along with your new found love, and not bruise her up. If not, well I find it difficult to be an instructor 'long distance'. In any case, Nebutani, I wish you many thousands of miles of safe, trouble free, and enjoyable riding ! Just one more thing... beware of the cars turning 'left' in front of you, and remember, they cannot tell how fast you are going. Expect them to turn in front of you, and you will live much longer ! RUBBER DOWN, THROTTLE UP.

Learn to use more gears and don't ride your rpm so high in your gears practice walking through your gears your being way too hard on your motorcycle sport bikes is about high rpm and Harley is about low rpm take for example sport bikes is about speed an high rpm Harley is about low rpms if you move up in a gear like 3rd and 5th is really where you really want to be in around town 5th is like over drive for highways think of it like this when your driving in town less barking better sounding the way you're driving is how you use 5th gear on high way its all about that lope sounding with a little beefy bark to it

@@AudioArcturia I've noticed that my 883 produces the lowest amount of vibrations around the maximum torque level at 3200-3300 RPMs and I never cruise below 2700. Would you say it's still high/stressed levels? Because highway riding on 5th gear easily pushes it to 4200 where I'd need it to sit for quite some time.
@AudioArcturia
@AudioArcturia Жыл бұрын
@@LtKim the 883 isn't made for highway cruising - the 5th gear is more or less an overdrive 4, which is still fine. The biggest enemy to the Evo motor isn't high revs, it's heat. As long as you're going fast enough to keep the engine cool, cruising 5000rpm or more is okay. But you may want to get an oil cooler. The XL1200 Harleys don't have an issue with 5th gear, however. It's a fair bit more stout.
