We’ve heard for years that karate doesn't work in MMA, then Lyoto Machida came along and proved otherwise. Performing in the most competitive arenas around the world for over 20 years, the Brazilian Dragon has earned a reputation of a cold-blooded samurai, stalking up a collection of unique knockouts. It's time to recollect the story about the Shotokan Karate master who defied expectations and took the UFC championship belt.

What I really appreciate about Machida is his temperance. Look at how many times his opponent went down and he assess if he needs to follow up with a barrage of blows. He almost always held back when he could clearly see the opponent was done. He then bows as a show of respect. This is what martial arts is all about.

I'm from Belém, the same town Lyoto grew up. My younger brother wanted to learn Karate so we took him to the best karate academy, APAM Machida. Every day I took my brother there, and every day I saw little Lyoto stretching, training, and even assisting his father on training the starting belts. I was around 13, so Machida must have been 9 or 10 at the time and he was already a purple belt (two behind the black). I remember thinking to myself: this kid is going to be a karate legend one day. He ended up becoming much more.

No one can remain undefeated so long as they continue to fight. Machida to me, in his moment, was such a class act, displayed impeccable timing and was respectful. He won most of his fights due to finesse moves, superior timing and showed great restraint in many fight-ending moments. When you study his loses, for the most part, he doesn’t lose anything in terms of his legacy. A true gentleman.

I feel conflicted - it’s a shame to see his decline, it makes a part of me wish he had recognized he was being left behind and turned to training future fighters, but I also understand that… he probably felt he couldn’t, even if he wanted to, because of the way karate values persistence against adversity and pain. It might have felt like a betrayal of his art. I hope he pivots to instruction soon. It would be a massive shame to have him get hurt and to lose the opportunity to learn from his expertise and experience.

Wonderful video! Complete respect to this humble warrior. I truly appreciate his restraint on his opponents when they're beaten - just the act of bowing before and after the fight - respect & discipline. Even in defeat, his supposed 'failure' was still a victory as he'd pick himself up, dust off, apply his martial science, train, refocus & come back stronger! THAT is the epitome of the Karate-Do mentality. Always learning.

My former brother in law was a big jock (played Pac 10 football) and was a friend of Jerry Quarry and his brothers. He told me watching Quarry's decline was heart wrenching, only to be followed by his brother's succumbing to the same fate. Just hearing his description of the brothers' sad and horrid fate was enough to make up my mind: no contact sports, no football, boxing, wrestling for my children. Let'em play baseball.

@RQD2 Do you really believe they are blind? Is that the level of your understanding? Couldn't it be they were swayed to pick the other fighter best on promotional bouts and money involved? They didn't even allow him to get close again to the belt with those decisions..just to fall short by a knock out.. that can happen at anytime by a mistake or lapses in judgment in a fight.. and counted on that with guys who were wither faster or taller than him.

As a former Shotokan Karate practitioner I congratulate Lyoto Machida for his strong will and fighting spirit. Like Bruce Lee he saw that a style alone is not enough to make you very effective and he invested in other practices as well to become more effective. He made it his way and he has gained my respect and admiration. In ancient Greece they saw the same winning principle and invented Pankration which was a combination of Boxing and Wrestling. Pankration was fought to the death in Ancient Olympic Games.
chimera916
chimera916 4 күн бұрын
Pankration was not a fight to the death... Death or serious injuries could occour as incidents, but this was not the goal of the fight. Not even sith Gladiators in ancient Rome the fighting was meant to achieve the death (if not in uncommon circumstances). There are many historical myths that are commonly accepted, but that are untrue.

@Alex Shatner I'm sorry about your friend bro. Reminds me of my great grandfather, (his daughter/my mother's mum, told me this story) back in the 1940's he was always getting into fights with much bigger people. But one day, his own cousin, big fella too, hit my pop in the back of the head with a big metal pipe. After that my great grandfather would have seizures often until his death. Again brother I'm sorry for your friend.

True story. My older brother met a Shotokan Sensei my senior year and we both started Karate lessons in N. Indiana (circa 1976 when I graduated). They had testing about 6 weeks after starting and I thought "no way" I'm ready that fast to go for my yellow belt. I worked hard and by the next time testing came around some months later, I had learned a lot, even moving on to more advanced techniques that I was trying to learn along with some Katas, since I liked Kata more than Kumite. I would practice at home a lot and when a friend jokingly challenged me that "that **** isn't any good for a real fight", we faced off only semi-seriously, and when I followed a round kick with a side kick all in one motion that stopped an inch from his nose, he said, "ok, maybe...". Anyway, we drive two towns away months later to the next testing, and after I change in the bathroom, an old Japanese man asks me if the bathroom is open, I reply, "yes" and he goes in and changes. We all line up, and the local school sensei introduces the Japanese man as a Shotokan master from Japan, touring the U.S. dojos, with my sensei, and two others from other schools sitting on either side of him. Finally my group of 4 white belts come up to test, we do all our basic forward kicks, front punches, downward blocks, etc. across the dojo floor and I thought it went fine as we finished, when about to walk away, the Japanese master looks at me and says, "YOU - you know round kick?" in his thick Japanese accent. I said, "a little" all while my heartbeat jumps up as I'm wondering 'what the heck, did I screw up???'... He says, "you DO!" So I do round kicks down the floor and he says, you know side kick?", and similarly I go "a little" and do side kicks down the floor. Keep in mind, this is one scared 17 something at his first Karate testing in a room with 50 students from white to black belts in rural Indiana. After a few more "you know...?" and me with my "a little" responses, he thanks me and dismisses me. Man, everyone's looking at me and there's a lot of mumbling going on, and those from my school are asking me what the heck I thought just happened as we circle up afterward. No one had any idea, had never seen anything like that at all. I learn that common practice was for our sensei to stay after and once they new all the results for our school, would call us each and tell us. So I'm walking on pins and needles at home, when he finally calls me about 9pm. He tells me that he had never seen anything like that either. But the Japanese master was impressed with how well I did the basic techniques to pass for yellow belt, that he wanted to ask about those other techniques to see how much more I knew than those. The result was he was suggesting that I be made green belt after what he saw, and the net result was they made me a blue belt, since a couple others suggested it might go to my head if I skipped TWO belts, instead of just one. And that's how I became a blue belt in Shotokan and never was a yellow belt. I later tested and passed my green belt test and then started college so had to put Karate aside, but I never forget that day in the dojo testing, nor my sensei who basically had only one good arm, as the other was partially paralyzed, but was a great inspiration and teacher.

@Alex Shatner That was foolish of your friend. You do not go to other countries or places for that matter and show them up. I come from a place where folks would say: 'Well, let's see if you don't bleed'. They have that sense of machismo that you do not want to trifle with. A martial arts 'master' should know that. I was that karate guy who was nice and friendly. I did not want a machete on my neck or a spear on my side while I was not looking. It's a shame that most people celebrate the physical side of martial arts training but not the self-improvement benefits of it. I say this with the vantage point of 51 years and counting of karate training.

@B Miller You're right about the light/no contact in Shotokan kumite nowadays. It's still need to be strong and focused as a technique. When I started many years ago, kumite practice allowed light to moderate hits to the body and strong but 'controlled' attacks to the face. We got hurt a lot in the beginning but we got better at it with more experience. An American Shotokan instructor once told me that the that way of kumite is not practical because it preaches 'control'. His students use gloves and hit each other. I told him that his understanding of 'control' maybe not how we understand it. I told him that going full force with a technique and stopping short of hitting requires a lot of training/skill in judging distance and movement. Also, 'control' means you determine where your technique ends. It might be your opponent's tip of the nose or 3 inches beyond it. It depends whether it's your dojo friend, (in a tournament) or a real foe. I was promoted directly to green belt (after a year of training) as we had none of these in-between colors you see nowadays as a device to make more money for the dojo in testing fees and profits from selling belts.

@Vio Okay Vio but what I'm saying is we ARE sure. When the guy is clearly napping, we don't need the ref. I'm talking about the common practice in mma of pounding on an unconscious opponent's face. If the guy's knocked out, he's knocked out! I don't understand how this bestial practice is allowed. I mean it should be illegal. There should be arrests and jail time. Wow.
B Wright
B Wright 3 ай бұрын
@Jake Hauser You're talking about someone getting dazed and recovering. Being dazed and knocked out are completely different. People don't get up and recover from being knocked out cold. And, once again, I and everyone else are referring to the guys who try to sneak hits in a split second BEFORE the ref can call the knockout. Just for free extra damage. You have clearly never been knocked out in a fight LoL
Jake Hauser
Jake Hauser 3 ай бұрын
@B Wright Sadly there have also been instances of fighters getting knocked unconscious, recovering quickly enough the ref (or pretty much anyone) doesn't notice or call the fight, then coming back and winning later on. The only reason we end up finding out is through instant replay, or by the fighters own admission in an interview later on. Thus simply knocking out your opponent isn't always enough to get a win. And if you were the person in the cage, with your career and possibly millions of future dollars on the line for essentially every fight (not to mention personal pride in your craft) imagine how horrible it would be to think back on a fight were you stopped because you thought your opponent was out and the ref would call it only for them to come back and win and worse maybe knock you out in return. Also the guy on the other side would likely go in for the finish on you without a second thought, so when you get the chance you definitely should take it and make sure to finish the job. I can't remember which fight it was i watched recently but basically this exact situation happened and all the announcers were talking about how much the loser would regret not going in for those finishing blows when he had the chance.

@Banned_and_Redacted I agree to the point of some. In my experience, it was useful to first grade all styles and arts as soft/med/hard. Most soft are useless and some/few of hard as well. Medium is in between. Of all the schools I've studied, one was a mix of various karate regional styles and includes portions of a lot of different art forms for very well-rounded, hard training. This is the type of school that isn't really karate but 80% of your time is basically karate training, and its easier to just say its karate than MMA. So some "karate" is absolutely awesome as a foundation for everything else, but pure karate is missing a lot of things. Like, tons of stuff. All the ground work, knee and elbow strikes, extra kicks from MT, judo throws, joint locks, pain and submission holds...

@youtuber both are correct in English grammar. Using “an” before a word starting with h is standard in UK English, and not standard in American English. Though I’m an America and use “an” before h-words.

ONE OF THE MOST UNDERRATED FIGHTER OF ALL TIME. Bro went 16 and 0 before his first loss. He had been in the UFC almost a decade before he lost. He always fought goo opponents. He literally lost to people like Jon Jones, Quinton Jackson, etc. HIS FIRST loss was a rematch. He never backed down. Bro is amazing man fr. I'll forever have huge respect for him as a fighter.

A good wholistic summary of his fantastic career in MMA. But, there are some videos like this. I think if someone can show how his journey impact the MMA world that would be great. To see many great MMA champions nowdays adapted karate style like Connor, Henry Cejudo and Patricio Pitbull is so amazing....they cannot deny Machida's influence in MMA world, not to mention fighters from Brazil.....

I have so much respect for him after watching this. Just the way he literally pauses after striking his opponent hard enough that he sees them dazed & knows if he needs to continue striking or that's enough & will not strike them again. He had so much respect for each & everyone of his opponents whether he won or loss. An showed the upmost respect to his opponent when he did lose. Would've been an honor to watch him live!!!

I had a good friend who was as good as Machida, with 20 years of Shotokan under his belt, went to Mexico, on vacation, and started showing his moves and skills, as some athletes tend to stretch, pose, and kick at the beach. The Drug cartels took it as if he was mocking them, so the next day, the Martial Arts Master was found decapitated, dismembered, and hanging from a bridge, RIP to my best friend. The lesson learned is that no matter how tuff someone is, or thinks he is, no one is invincible. One is still, flesh and bone, fragile and mortal.

I am a former karate fighter myself, i didn't compete and never went to professional career for many reasons, but in our core, our philosophy teaches to never use unjustified power, to use our strength against injustice. My former sensei tried to bring back the true karate roots, not Olympic karate, and we've learnt nage/kuzushi waza techniques, which made us proficient in judo/Jiu-Jitsu. Karate is one MA that makes one a weapon, ready to kill, not just a fancy MA with fancy postures and stances, and most important, it teaches humility and respect. Lyoto Machida is one hero of mine and wildly respected amongst fighters, cause he carries the true spirit of Martial Arts, he bows to his opponent cause they are no enemy, and he stands up after every defeat to fight once again, never shows off, never trash talks or insults anyone, an enlightened man.
