I bought a Turbo Vado SL5 EQ earlier this year (2024). Massive success, and I still get the exercise, but without the strain. I wondered how the gears would be, but needn't have worried. For me, they are at least as good as Deore. The integration of the motor is amazingly smooth, and I find the slight motor noise reassuring; people walking ahead seldom pick up on it. I can't detect any motor drag. I use the gears much more often than I used to, as grinding along greatly reduces the assistance you get. This is something you perfect withi n minutes.

Great review - I've just bought one of these secondhand from my bike tech, it's in a silver-grey colour. This may sound blasphemous but I've got a big reel of grey duct tape, I'm going to cover up the "Specialized" logos because where I live it's better not to attract too much attention and I've already had my 2016 Specialized Sirrus stolen from the middle of town. I stupidly used cable locks back then, now it's double U locks for short stays, triple u locks for longer adventures - Kryptonite New York Fahgedaboudit mini thru the rear wheel around the seat stays, Abus Granit X plus 540 long shackle thru the rear wheel around the seat stays and bike rack + a Wordlock U-lock on the front wheel and bike rack. It'll only be a matter of days before I swap out the wordlock for a Litelok X1 u-lock - I can't deter all the thieves out there, all I can do is make them toil, sweat and labour just as I did and even more! 😀

@@RidePureElectric One general one on eBikes would be good to see is considerations for winter riding - namely the cold air's impact on battery performance/charging. I've 2 ebikes and battery performance is very different in the cold - one maintains a strong charge, the other less so. Only notice it as I cover the same kilometres on the daily commute in Summer & Winter. Would be curious how the VadoSL performs (same/different) over the seasons - as with other long-term reviews. Get the feeling from your review that the tyres in Winter could be an issue too.. ebike specific tyres try to handle the extra weight/speed and also be a catch-all sometimes, which isn't ideal. Am wondering if a gravel bike tyre choice would be the smarter move in Winter :)

i Had the Vado SL 4.0 but felt that i was being "cheated" out by the speed limiter!! it was just so frustrating as it took away that e-bike fun factor up hills. I installed the Planet3 "delimiter" which worked a treat and made it possible to get more out of the motor. I wasnt worried about decreased range etc as just charged it more often. I added original fenders and rack from Specialized... and then all went up in smoke, when my bike was stolen last week out of my secure bike shed in my "secure" underground garage... thieves just cut through my wall mounted Hiplok AIRLOK like butter with an angle grinder!! So, now looking at replacing with the EQ model with the insurance replacement voucher...

They're in really high demand at the moment so I'm guessing they're unlikely to drop in price for a while longer but who knows. If like me you're a bit of a fair weather cyclist then it may be worth waiting for a couple of months. Can I ask if you sourced the planet3 system from your LBS or did you buy it separately, if so I'd appreciate the link to the product if possible. One last thing, do you remember how much it cost to get it fitted? Thanks JK

@@kili8055 I use the Vado as my daily home-office commute, so will have to splash out now im afraid. I bought the product direct from the guy who makes it. Alex, at planet3.bike/ . He has a whole bunch of videos as well to show you step-by-step installation. They have a version for all the Vado models, so you can DM him and he always replies quickly. I suppose i was lazy and wanted the part intalled by LBS, as they were familiar with the Planet3. I cant remember but i think they charged £35 for the install. You can speak to Andrew at Fudges. I also had one of those Display units for the Vado, but it becomes useless once Planet3 installed and will give totally wrong speed reading. So just use my iphone with Quadlock as a trip computer if needed... Rgds

Great review. I'm squarely on the fence between the Vado SL and an eMBT - the Trek Powerfly 4. Very different bikes for sure. I'll be doing mostly, at least 80% +, road and hard pack tow path trail riding with the family. No communiting. Possibly some dirt trail riding but not true mtb tails. The Vado SL is noticeably lighter, much faster on pavement, and easy to manage even up hill without any motor assist. The Powerfly is heavy and likely much slower and hard to get up a hill without assist, but obviously can go off road on just about any type of condition, plus it has a suspension fork (albeit a very basic coil fork).

Agreed, a great review.! Have you looked into fitting a suspension seatpost? I'm aware of people having fitted them in the US but haven't found any specific details on how to do this online. I've been advised by the Specialized Concept store in Ruislip that it should just be a matter of disconnecting the connectors in the seatube. After removing the Seatpost and pulling out the cables a little, I can't see any connectors just cables. I'd like to fit a Suntour Ncx SP12 to my newly purchased Vado SL 5.0, I had one on my previous bike, a relatively cheap suspension seatpost (in comparison to some) yet quite effective. I'm aware that I would lose the functionality of the rear seat light but I'm happy to fit a separate battery operated rear light. Thanks.

I picked up my Turbo Vado a couple of weeks ago and took it for a spin on the following Sunday. OMG! It made my old bike look and feel stupid. I sh*t you not, the difference between the two was night and day. It is true what they say, you only get what you pay for. First thing I noticed, the same pedal work now gets me twice the distance! How is that possible? Gear changes are a snap! Before, I had to 'push' the levers to feel the cables move the derailleurs. Now, I only have to touch the levers and the gears change! I thought it was electric assist but no, it's 21st century gearing! The electric motor assist is excellent too - the power glides in as opposed to 'jerking' in and I can get up those hills so much easier now. The bike won't do the work for me! I still have to pedal to get the assist to kick in. The bike accuracy (nee, precision) is brilliant - it feels true and really well engineered. Everything's taut - I don't feel any of my energy is lost at all and everything goes into moving the bike forward speedily and efficiently. Oh man, I should have done this years ago! I can now plan those long hikes I used to do way back when and do so with renewed confidence. Oh, and those kids that used to breeze past me saying 'Hi, ya...', they don't do that any more! I drop the assist into 'Sport' and leave them in my wake! I'm going out on it again tonight! Wish me luck... 🤞🏾

Just picked up a 2020 model, and I'm regretting it, big time. The battery life is horrid. There is an available firmware update, but I can't see that making a significant difference. I got about 35km mostly in Sport mode, and when I saw how it was draining, I put it in Eco mode for about 15% of my ride. I arrived at my destination, just over 30km, and Mission Control showed that I had 7% left. My other ebike, (Qualibike, about a quarter of the price), gets 80km on a charge.

Hi Thomas, thanks for the comment. I'm 6ft (183cm) and tested a size large. I felt like it fit perfectly for me. At 187cm it sounds like you may need an XL. Hopefully you local dealer can advise on sizing. Thanks, Joe.

I work in a bike shop and can tell you straight up a hub motor does not even come close to a center motor at the cranks, and Specialized motor is the most natural feeling of all. You ride one of these and a hub motor feels like you’re being pushed.

Thanks for a riders view of the bike. I’ve bought into e-biking with my Levo but it’s a bit of a beast for a scoot down country lanes on a summer evening. This looks like the ideal for that an the odd weekend tour.

Quick Q for you please. Does the lowest level of assistance give you more than simply make up for the excess weight of the bike? Would you be as quick for the same effort on a decent sirrus? Thanks.
@RidePureElectric
@RidePureElectric 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jonathan, that's a good question, and one I don't think I could properly answer without some back-to-back testing with a Sirrus. What I can say is, at 30% the assist feels fairly subtle on flat and gentle inclines, but once you hit a proper hill I think it more than makes up for the increase in weight of the bike. Hope that helps and let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks, Joe.
@jonathanpower7628

@@RidePureElectric Cheers - I don't think weight is much of a factor on the flat so am persuaded by our reassurance it helps on the hills even at 30%. So that's me committed to a Vado SL 5 EQ! Will let you know how that works out.
@RidePureElectric
@RidePureElectric 4 жыл бұрын
@@jonathanpower7628 Hi John, yes at 30% you definitely feel some assist. It certainly isn't winching you up the climb like turbo mode does, but it helps lessen the strain. As I say in the review, I'm fairly light at 65kg, so if you're a heavier/more powerful rider, e.g. 80kg+, you may find you want to tweak the lower mode to add a little more assist (perhaps 40%) in the Specialized Mission Control App.Thanks, Joe.

Me myself is trying to figure out if i am going for a heavier MTB E-bike or a bike such as vado sl, lighter more road oriented bike. A small question maybe...How is the Vado SL to ride on gravel roads and /or some more bumpy roads?

With the crazy increase on price for ebikes right now specially for the Creo, I'm thinking getting a Vado and converting it to drop bar. Will it ride like a Creo? Obviously not. But with the amount I could save, I would be able to make lots of adjustments in other parts to make up for it I think.

Hi, thanks for making the video. What are your thoughts on towing a child trailer with this sort of e-assist? Would hills be undoable with the extra weight or just drain the battery quicker? I only have a short 20 minute commute and can charge the battery either end, but not sure if the motor might just simply be unable to provide any noticeable assistance under weight? Thanks in advance! :)

Hi, thanks for the comment. Considering your total mileage each day will be around 12 miles you can easily ride the Vado SL in boost mode the whole time, so it shouldn't be a very strenuous ride. While most of my testing was done in the colder months, I never felt overly sweaty after a hilly ride, so I think you'd be ok on that front as well. Another tip is to avoid wearing a backpack and put everything on your bike when travelling to work. I've often found you end up with a big patch of sweat on your back when using a backpack. Hope that helps! Joe.

i have an alez right now. just moved to a new city that has LARGE hills so im looking for an ebike. i routinely hit 30-35mph on the flat and 45+ down hill. will the motor restrict top speeds? i currently have a 52 front and 28 cassette, does this bike feel like it can handle such gearing or would the motor torque out? i dont really care as much about boosting at really low speeds as much as i do keeping me at a minimum and helping me say above 25mph as much as possible. will this do that?

The bicycle lights are amazing. I love how bright it is. The only downside to these bicycle lights, are if you are on any shared pedestrian/cyclist paths - they really irritate some pedestrians if you're cycling at night. A weaker light you wouldn't need to worry about adjusting the light every time you hop onto those shared paths.

Hi, great review video. I am looking to buy an e bike for the first time. I have always ridden bikes and have been pretty fit. Unfortunately I’ve had a few health issues but don’t want to pack in riding completely. I enjoy gravel riding mainly, where I live I can ride on a mix of quiet lanes, tracks and bridleways. Some of which can be rough, but not enough to warrant a mtb. It’s also very hilly. I currently ride a drop bar gravel bike, but I’d like a new bike to have flat bars and a more comfy riding position. The Vado seems to be marketed as a commuter bike (I’d use it for this too) but want to know if it would be a practical alternative to my gravel bike on the days I need that e assist. Thank you.

Can I ask how the bottom bracket fares, what sort of life span. I am looking at the bike and well the tyres are chunky which makes the rider work much harder. I found such tyres unable to cruse, you seem to be constantly working to get the bike to move because of the tyres resistance. Range is extended by not constantly using the assist on flat sections or down hills, this bike seems to require the assist to be on constantly mainly because of the tyres. Experience has taught me chunky tyres are just hard work on any surface except dedicated cross country path ways such as mountain bike trails. A normal bike with 28c road tread tyres will work far better on a commute bike far less resistance and in the right gear you can cruse along quite quickly with very little effort because there is far less tyre resistance. You may want to try putting some Durano plus 700x28c tyres on that bike you may triple it's range.
