Today we finish up a big project on our Wood-Mizer LT15 sawmill... making the decking for our loft! We decided to mill up some douglas fir we had leftover from milling our timber frame into 2x6 boards. Off to the kiln they go... we hope to have them back in a few weeks at 8% moisture!

HI, I have a band mill and have used it for 20+ years. Elissa I give you a big big +++ for your work. You could do most anything you put your mind to. However you do have a great teacher and companion. Don't know about off camera but It would show if it were different I'm sure.You two are a great team and such a pleasure to watch, Your example is so up lifting and positive. It makes life worth living. Wish more of this type of positive living for life was available for kids today. Your love for each other shines forth in the way you treat each other. and bugaboo your cute pet. Blessings to you.

If you are going to use any of it for flooring, you don't really have to worry about the length as long as it fits between two floor joists. In fact in a floor random length looks really good, and is common practice. As a side note you have a brake light on the trailer. Have a blessed day

nice stacking of bundles....your attention to strips between the boards right at the ends will keep it from twisting....good job. air drying will take the moisture out of your lumber just as much as kiln dried....with time. just poly the top to keep the rain and snow out. cheers!

Jesse, suggest that you consider your stickers at the end of the pack, on the square end a Wider sticker, double the regular sticker width, and move it to the very end of the pack layer. Would guess that it will minimize even more the checking issue. On the East Coast we always do that with All species. HPB

In the start of the video Jessie says 77 boards but when I paused the video at 1:45 I could see only 9 full rows (7 boards) on the trailer. That's 63 boards. Regardless, that's a good result for one day's work. Thumbs up!

Seriously.....You actually paused the vid and counted.
@monksuu
@monksuu 6 жыл бұрын
Of course I did because the pile didn't look that high with only 7 boards in a row. Also, I remembered their first board haul was about 15-16 rows high so this pile didn't seem that high in comparison. It seemed to be about half as tall as the earlier pile. :) But why I shouldn't have counted, seriously? ;)

You guys rock so hard!!! As fellow WM15 owners, watching you guys mill is incredibly fun! Question: We understand about 7 months ago the LT15 WIDE was traded for the standard LT15. What are the differences between the standard and WIDE models besides the obvious ability to take larger logs? In the video showing the swapping of WIDE for standard 15, Jessie mentioned there were key features the standard 15 had over the WIDE, but didn't specify what those key features were. Very, very curious. Thank you for the Great content! Nathalie and Brian, San Anselmo Ca.

Nice job cutting the wood. I really want you guys to consider this. You really should get the house dried in before you put the flooring down. I know you feel like you have to do it the other way. But you are making a big mistake. Get the roof on otherwise when you put this flooring down especially after it's been kiln-dried it is going to soak up water like a sponge and it's going to expand exponentially. You really need to have the roof on before you put this flooring down. And you need to keep that flooring as dry as possible from that point on. Even with the roof on, It'll soak up moisture without the walls up. You need to get the walls up fairly quickly to after you get the floor on. Just trying to be helpful and I hate to see you waste a lot of time and effort and cause all kinds of problems. Do yourself a favor and get the roof on first!
@CGT80
@CGT80 6 жыл бұрын
They don't feel they need to do the floor first, they KNOW they need to do the floor first, per their engineer and architect. I don't understand how people fail to understand how this type of frame works and the fact that the second floor is needed to hold the frame square and the wall panels needed to tie the frame into the floor before the roof is built. They explained it, but then again I also spent about 20 years doing construction work and have seen a few buildings and have built and squared structures. If it was a stick built structure, they it wold make sense to do the roof and walls first. I do agree with the moisture problem. It seems they might have been better off waiting to build the timber frame at the end of winter or beginning of spring and then should have had the panels, windows, and flooring figured out so that they could work during better weather and be dried in by fall. They set themselves up for failure with the timeline last year. They are new to this and crap happens even for professionals. Hopefully, they have a better timeline with getting it dried in and the weather doesn't cause any problems to the house.

another awesome day. I also had some 10/12/14 inch boards 2 inches thick left over from a load of logs I had bought. They were full width and full thickness and I can tell you that they were extremely valuable to people looking at building a staircase. People will pay top dollars for lumber like that as long as it has been well stickered and is in good condition. Congrats again on all your work. Always more fun when you do it for yourself without crazy production targets and crazy deadlines ;)

I would process and dry those flitches sooner than later and store them out of the weather. If you let them sit, you are going to have a hell of a time drying/planing them to a useful product. Even when it is cold, you are releasing moisture out of that wood.
