We deliberately picked the poly pipe that we did (from the company we did and not the standard stuff you can find at Home Depot) for many reasons, but it’s proved to be challenging to work with. The issues these two are having are issues anyone would have that is trying to work outside their area of expertise and comfort zone. Plus your your seeing the the issues they ran into the first time they did it with no one on site holding their hands and looking over there shoulder telling how to do it. I have learned how to tile floors, drywall, plumbing etc by myself, and I can now do all of these things 2-5 times faster and in most cases do it better :) (I can't finish drywall at all) However, both my wife and I also know better and now pay the correct people to do it for us and its even faster and a lot better. :)

My husband loves that stuff, he calls it miracle pipe. He was and engineering superintendent working on municipal water supplies for many years and he has worked with every kind of piping invented, including cast iron. Now we are retiring to a farm, he has miles of the stuff. He said, "If you ever need to use that again, you can nail a 2x6 to a tree and use it as a spool."

Tip for the next time...unroll you pipe spool instead of laying the spool on the ground and walk away with one end of the pipe. That way you don't get a twist for every round of unrolling pipe. The same goes for electical cable on a spool.

Once, I was working with polly pipe with a 4 man crew. The pipe was on a trailer spool. 3 Guys pulled and unspooled/unwound the pipe and tried to lay it in the ditch. It was cold, the kinky pipe wouldn't stay in the ditch. 500 feet away, those 3 guys were playing a joke on me by shouting obscenities at me down the pipe, I was at the other end of the open pipe, when I discovered what they were doing, I decided to return the favor. I took the open end of the pipe and shoved it over the exhaust pipe of the still running pickup truck. That stopped them. In a few minutes the pipe was warm and as limp as a wet string, the pipe practically jumped in the ditch and laid there at the bottom of the ditch. I understand this is NOW how they routinely lay the troublesome pipe, and tame the beast.

Always waiting for the next instalment as they are well presented and very interesting.we have done the exact same thing on our 250 acre farm and used what we call a pipe jenny which we towed behind our John Deere gator rolling out 9 x 200 metre coils of 2inch poly for our stock watering system. It stops the twisting as it unravels and lies relatively flat on the ground. Who wants to know this after the event! Keep up the good work.

Hi all. When un-winding poly it is always ideal to build yourself a spinning platform, this can be built for about $30 with a mechanics platform and cheap ply. Dont worry about making your platform friction free. If you pull the poly off with tension you will find that 2 inch pipe will only deflect 20cms or so instead of the metres you were encountering, this allows you to lay straight into most trenches.

Congratulations! Well done taming this poly pipe snake monster that has a real history with me...I often use the 2 inch for irrigation on small farms, and as hoops for backyard hoop houses (just slide it over a T post in the ground). My method has always been to use the tractor to stretch out the entire roll IN THE sub-tropical SUN for its full length but your 'guestimate' for half way was excellent! Since I work in poly pipe on a regular basis, (using 55 gallon drums and other plastic materials to make aquaponic systems on a small scale for other folks backyard systems) I have a little experience in cutting holes into poly materials. When drilling, I turn the drill in reverse once the central drill has gone through. This leaves me a cleaner cut (useful when adding grommets etc. to the sides of drums) and creates less waste. Thought this might be useful. Loving your videos...keep 'em coming.

One idea that would help some to reduce friction. Cut the white PVC pipe off at a 45 where you are feeding in the black pipe at the top and put a chunk of 2x8 against the dirt bank so you won't be dragging dirt down the pipe as you load the black pipe. Dirt in the pipe increases the friction and doesn't help anything. I appreciate your videos!! You are overall doing a great job!!

We hung the 6' coil of tubing in the air, from a convenient tree, supported on a 1' dia x 2' long cable spool as a bearing inside the coil, with a rope thru a hunk of tubing thru the center of the spool. That allowed the coil to roll in place, & smoothly pay out the tubing with only one curve, as I pulled it into the PVC shell, and no twists (which is why you had big loops to fight).

I used to be a cable engineer. I haven't watched the video yet but I know exactly what's going to happen. You simply must roll it out. Every time you lift a turn off it's another twist in the pipe. (As you have found out.)

BTW... poly tubing is Wonderful, I've put in miles of it... you will learn how to handle it after a while. I do enjoy your adventures and I'm sure there will be many folks learning things by watching your struggles... tip for future pull string/rope use. you mentioned leaving a rope/string in the pipe if you ever need to replace or add a run of pipe. the tip is don't use that string/rope to pull the pipe. use it to pull a new, fresh string/rope through the pipe. you don't want to start pulling the pipe through and have the old string snap.

I would have made a spool from some 2x blocks and put a piece of ply on either side to feed from. So many things could have gone wrong with the hook it up and pull it method, lucky it only kinked in one spot.

the trick to working with large poly like that... build a small fire in the center of the roll to let it warm up just for 10 to 15 mins... you can't do this now but.. build a small fire and run it past the fire as you thread it in to warm it up. it will make it alot easier and the slower you push or pull it through the more it will heat the poly up because you need it heated up to get it through secondly.. sadly the only way to unroll poly is to.. unroll it.. not pull on the end and hope for the best unrolling it will stop it getting twisted, just like cable

As someone who has had to roll out 50 mm pipe in the past I found the best way was to anchor one end to the ground then keeping the heavy coil upright walk along while rolling the coil like a wheel. This completely eliminated the kinking in the pipe. It was a struggle, but far better than trying to pull the pipe which, because of the nature of the coil, will kink every time when pulled by any towing device, I then added some weights (bricks etc) to the end of the unrolled coiled and let it sit in the sun for a couple of days after which it was very easy to place the pipe in a 600 mm deep trench.

Just a hint for dealing with anything that has a natural coil like the poly you are working with. ( extension cords, house wiring, rope, electric fencing) anything that comes in a coil. put an axle thru the middle and unroll it from the coil. this way the loops do not have the chance to form kinks like your video showed and one person can handle that amount once set up. thank you for putting your experiences on the www. it is very interesting and informative.

just completed a similar task. smaller scale but some of the same issues. buried a water pipe between two buildings. 150'. used black solid 4" corrugated pipe as my conduit. I threaded 2 lengths of PEX pipe along with 2 cat5 cables and some paracord for future use. the fun part was getting the first length of paracord through to pull everything. I used a plastic drink cup and a leaf blower. tied the paracord to the cup. had it blown through in about 45 seconds.

For poly pipe up to 63mm we lay it on the ground as you did but take the inside end and pull it out with on person pulling and rotating it to remove the twist with the second person flipping the coil out of the centre roll. For poly pipe larger than 63mm we lay the coil on the ground with a long chain through the coil, then use a machine to pull the outside end of the pipe. This makes the roll spin. When it comes to pulling the pipes in the casing pipe we pull them in together wher ever possible.

Bit late now for you guys but I found it was easier to leave the roll in the sun and get it hot. Then unroll out in a field and straighten. Once straight and relaxed then drag to where you want to use it. Also making two bands of fencing wire around your poly with one other person you can stand the poly pipe up and slip the wire around as you unroll it. Here in Australia it gets very hot so beware to use gloves and watch for kinks as it's soft when hot. Good luck with your dreams. Peace.

I've been dreading the day you guys start to pull the poly in the PVC. I know 98% of the people who comment on your videos love to hurl advice and negativity from behind a keyboard so I won't do that... when you pulled your original string into the PVC with the 3/4" poly it without a doubt twisted around the 3/4" a few times, that's just the nature of the beast. It's going to be damn near impossible to pull that 2" poly with the 3/4" already in there. You've got a fighting chance of pulling them at the same time but not like you're planning with the 3/4" already in there.

Yeah - even working with 1" poly I got frustrated! stuff is a booger. You held onto your sanity - you might need some getting it in the pipe. DON'T figure on running one line through then the next - each makes a small corkscrew which interferes with last and next run. Tried that valiantly - had to rip it all back out tie all together in a staggered pull configuration and rerun. Either way you go all the best - just sent up a poly-pulling prayer for you. You're inspirings many with your tenacity!

Some cool ingenuity, and hopefully some lessons learned. I'll add, if you'd like to keep your trees, use a tree saver strap instead of chain around them. Tree straps aren't expensive, and I'm sure you'll use them multiple times.

Ack! As other folks have said, unroll anything coiled to avoid twisting. Also, that pipe probably has some type of length marking printed along it from when it was manufactured, so you could figure out where the middle was at.

That 2" lpoly ooks like a pain to work with and the 3/4" might have been a tad smoother if you'd not left a rock inside the casing pipe. My impression from a lot of these videos is that, as with a lot of guys, Jesse tends to overestimate his own competence slightly and Alyssa tends to underestimate her own capabilities, but I guess it all balances out.. :)

Mule Tape would be better than the rope, both in shape and strength. Did you ever contemplate laying the black poly out first then building the white PVC around it ? sliding each section over and down the slope then gluing ? Quite a project this is and has been. I am impressed and learning from your toils.

I use a lot of poly pipe in my oil field job. When we need to unroll a 1000' roll of 2" poly pipe, we connect one end of the pipe to a vehicle (truck, tractor, atv) and one person will drive the vehicle pulling the poly while the other holds the poly pipe roll vertical, with the side of the roll facing toward the vehicle, and cut the bands as needed. This will works fine to pull all the pipe out of the roll. Once the roll of pipe is completely unrolled, we will drag the pipe down a dirt road for a half mile or so, around a connecting road and back to the ditch.. This will pull all of the curve out of the poly pipe and get it ready to lay in a ditch perfectly.

I know this is late but when you pull string in pipe all you need is a plastic shopping bag and a shop vac. You tie the bag to the string and vacuum it through the pipeline. Then you use the string to pull a heavy rope or cable. Tie the rope to the quad at the bottom and slowly pull the pipeline through. Hope this helps for future projects.

For those who read this, for your future reference shall you find yourself doing the same. DO as everyone is saying and unroll it, also when feeding down a pipe make sure its clear of rocks (think I saw some when they sent the 1/2 or 3/4 through) easily done by using a few 5 gallon buckets with water and dumping it down the pipe first. When feeding it through, take an empty soda bottle either 1 or 2 Liter or 20 ounce or smaller for "conduit" pipe with an ID larger than the bottles OD as it would allow you a better attachment point for the roping string and the bottle acts as a guide for the end of the pipe to keep it from catching on edges and gaps as you noticed how she had to grab the end once it got to the end of the "conduit" pipe when it was "stabbing" the bend gap. If sending more than one pipe through the same conduit, wrap some black electrical tape around the end you are feeding through, it is better than drilling a hole that you just have to cut off after, tape prevents the need to drill said hole to pull it through. You could use duct tape but it makes more of a hassle to remove but still can over the electrical tape to give it a stronger grip, seeing as electrical tape comes off cleaner.

I done lots of cable pulling in my days, telephone cable, network cable, fiber, etc. It's not uncommon for the pull rope to get wrapped around the other cables as they get pulled through the conduit. I've also seen the pull rope wear through the cable jacket inside the pipe during future pulls, which could happen to the pipe on a future pull through of additional pipe. Just something to watch out for. Love the videos!

hi guys, been watching for a while. if you have not already installed it i have a suggestion for pulling your 2" pipe. 1 use your truck to pull the pipe through 2 after tying the rope through your holes in the pipe, wrap the pipe end and the beginning of the the rope. this should allow your pipe to pass the elbows and fitting much easier. i hope this helps

To help you get through the bends, you could put a wooden cone fitted to the end of your 2 inch pipe, to help guide it around corners easier

I think it would have been easier/better to use a reel to "pay" out the poly tubing. That would roll out the tubing as it was rolled at the factory. Just a guess on my part as we pay out electrical cables from a spool.

I would think if they were to attempt to use the entire length it would be weak or might even leak there. But I think the plan is to cut the pipe in about the middle since they only need about 250 from the top to the bottom of the hill.

If you ever do it again it's worth building a quick a frame and center section to hang the reel. Utility companies roll 5" conduit off in a similar way without a huge amount of issue.

Reminds me of pulling in thick cables at work! An basic A frame and with a good sized sewer pipe make for a handy tool in this case.. But since you just have one long pull stretching it out was a great idea! If it was me and I knew for sure had enough I'd chop that pipe in half where it got bent. I would say that you should look at the possiblility of using your winch on the quad bike to pull the poly pipe through the conduit. A similar style of setup is done by power companies to pull power cable through the conduit. Power companies place the cable drum on big rollers and then use a wire sock on the cable to grip and pull it through the conduit with a winch. The cable that they pull through can be over 100kg/m (220Lb/m). As you are getting a machine to do the job for you it can possibly make life easier than doing it by hand.

When we used this pipe we filled it with water and used stakes and walked it out straight and let the sun heat it for a few days before installed,i helped alot.

If poly is like cable it is marked with the length left in the roll. i.e. a 500ft roll starts at 500 and counts down to 0. It is how I know if there is enough fiber optic/copper cable left in the box to make the next run. A trick of the trade for when you get into wiring is to write the amount of cable left after a run on the box/reel. It makes it easy to grab a roll with enough left without looking too hard. Also, if the hole isn't filled in, look into pulling "Mule Tape" in the pipe instead of rope. It has a lot higher pulling strength, like 2500lbs for 3/4" wide. It won't cut into the pipe when you are pulling it like round rope will. It doesn't degrade nearly as fast as rope does. Put extra in the pipe so it has a bit of slack and then fold it back onto the pipe and tie it a couple of times. When you do a pull, attach some more to be pulled into the pipe. That way you always have a pull string incase you need it. It has tons of uses on/off a job site after you pull it out, i.e. use it in the next pipe, strapping down lumber, restraining an intruder, pulling things, anchoring stuff to a tree (instead of a chain), weave it into a chair, and lastly as a belt.... and yes I have seen it used for every one of those things to include the intruder and more.

When we do large poly we rope one end and just drive in and out of the trees or posts until pipe is uncoiled. Works cold or hot.

Another strategy would be to put a beam across the trailer high enough so the tubing hangs free. Then unreel the poly line by pulling with the four wheeler. Laying it on the ground and uncoiling leaves the pipe with twists which you found the hardy way.

this is NOT the right way to unroll a spool to tube!!! you need to unroll the coil by turning it. Look at the farmers, they have s a unrealler for their field drains!

If you ever have to deal with Poly again, the best way to keep it straight is to tie the end down and then roll it like a wheel unspooling as you go. It is still not easy but it does make the material more manageable. Best of luck to you guys. I have fallen in love with your story and it inspires me to approach our build in the future in a similar way. As a child my parents and I lived in a camper and huge army tent while we worked our property and built our house. Of course it was on the mid North coast of Australia outside a little town called Bundaberg so the climate, vegetation and soil were completely different. My next build will be in North Central Texas near the Oklahoma state line. Look forward to your next video/adventure.

If you were an electrician or anyone who works with cables, you never ever lay pipe like how you have done. You must use a dispenser or unroll it buy rolling it accros the land. You have just filled it with twists never pull the coils from the top. The banding was correct you just cut it in stages and roll out as you go, not cut all the banding in one go. It's a schoolboy error but funny, you live and learn in life, sometimes the hard way! Good vid anyhow.

good video! one thing that would help others if they don't have the heat you did would be to use a heat gun blowing hot air through it, the kink in the pipe would have made The heat gun less of an option.. Expensive, yes, but an option none the less. one other thing that may be a bit of a pain will be the 3/4 in the pipe already while pulling in the 2 inch. may have been a better idea to pull them both in at the same time. a rope capstan winch will be well worth your time and $ to rent to pull this in. slow and steady, but make sure you have radios so if the person running the winch needs to stop for what ever reason, the person up top feeding will be able to tell the person running the winch to stop. so impressive all the work you two do!

I don't know if anyone has mentioned to you that anything that has been coiled that holds it shape like any kind of wire or tubing plastic or copper ,its best to unwind it to pull it alot easier amd to prevent kinks or tangles. Great Videos :)

Well thats another fine mess, lol, When you said people told you that you might have troubles and they might of even told you about what happen, seems they would of told you too how to NOT get into this mess, then again its not easy sometimes when you know or see what can become from this, so how I would do it is this, fine 2 trees close together, nail a good size board high enough to put the coil on it and keeping it off the ground level and on the opposite side of the tree and direction your wanting it to go, then put another board close to the bottom of the coil hole, this would help to make it spoil off easier, also make sure that the end of the pie inside the coil, hanging on the boards was coming off the boards when pulled, NOT bumping them, as the spring action would still come into play still, I would pull/stretch it out, let the sun make it like a wet noodle and then pull into the pipe at that time, also use the ATV to pull the rope connected to the end of the pipe, trying do this with you back is not going to have a good out come, if this is not a straight shot from where your pulling to the end of the large pipe you'll put it into take some rope and rap around a tree and the pipe which keeps it on the line that you need to get it into the pipe, just a big loop will do, I'm getting sleepy and hope this made sense or helpful, I enjoy your stuff and its fun to watch but as an older person with lots of back/leg/knee troubles its not easy to watch at time, when your young you don't think about it much, at 77 you think/wounder why you didn't thin about it, lol, sorry for got to put this up at the beginning, as slow as you guys put up your videos, the house might be built and sold by now, lol, but you should get a lot of advice from these and you should really listen or keep those in mind or ask before you do this kinda stuff and get hurt,

hi, we work with 50mm HDPE every day and you need to unroll the coil and all the twists will be gone. it is harder to do that at the start but it saves you all the time in the end.

I aplaud your enthusiasm. but I would never uncoil a roll of wire, rope, or fishing line for that mater. I would have made some sort of reel or stand and unrolled that pipe.

the other reason why they wrapped 2 inch poly in several sections is so that you can secure one end end literally roll the spool out until you hit the next set of straps and then cut those off and continue to roll until you hit the next set and so on but you definitely want to make sure the one end is secure I usually park a vehicle on top of it

when working with pipe to large to roll out standing up. you lay it down on its side and attach the inside end of the pipe and just hook it up to your truck and have someone feed off the coils as you drive along will pull out straight

Sorry you had so much trouble with the poly pipe as other people have mentioned its easier to unroll it on the ground. I've worked with polyethylene pipe often in the winter up to -40C or F weather but we usually have it on a wooden reel and can unroll it either off a reel trailer by pulling it off with a backhoe loader or a truck. For you guys you probably would of needed two more people to unroll it by hand. If you don't have a hole saw like you used there a sawzall or reciprocating saw works really well and then you thread a lifting strap (continous loop) and put one on a pintle hitch with it closed and then it won't unhook like a chain. It's kinda hard to explain all the tricks of the trade over a comment section but there is more than one way to unroll poly pipe of any kind.

Pipe Kink: Try heating the Poly where it is kinked to remove the kink. Either good hot air gun or a propane torch (but propane torch is likely to melt the poly unless your extremely careful)

FYI you prob. already know but there was a large stone at the bottom of the white casing when she pulled the 1st 3/4 line out?at the 45. It would block and prevent you from pulling another thru!

Before you stick that big poly into the conduit, camber the leading edge so that it is less likely to catch when it comes to the bend and that elbow at the end. I do it with a rasp and smooth off with a file.
