Lyrically this story ended up being much more personal than we initially intended. We started with the idea to tell a fictional story but throughout the process, I found ways to incorporate real feelings of loss and mourning, as well as anger and self-doubt. I’ve always been a very personal writer and this was originally a step away from that, into something more artistic. But in the end, it was just as therapeutic as writing a regular Knocked Loose record, and I think you’ll be able to hear that. - bryan garris

I can't listen to permanent without playing the whole EP in order. In fact I find this whole EP as one song because I always listen to all of it in order. It's just so damn good storytelling in an album
@TMA25 ай бұрын
I know, right? I listened to it about four times, twice with the video before finally reading the lyrics alongside it before I "got it". possibly because I was mostly listening while working those first few times, and wasn't actively paying attention as I could have. but once I gave it my full attention, the stylized, somewhat symbolic nature of the video all made sense... and combined with the music, lyrics, and delivery, it /really/ hit me, such that I had to stop listening for about a week. I can't recall any other song, album, or other musical project having that kind of effect on me to where I'm unsettled and ill-at-ease without exactly knowing why. although "return to passion" is obviously one of the more disturbing tracks lyrically - and even though most death metal has far more gratuitous lyrics, they don't often have that level of buildup, narrative, and emotional engagement to really make it hit home in a way you don't see coming... god damn it's good though, whether with video, lyrics, both, or neither.

Here's the lyrics *_WHERE LIGHT DIVIDES THE HOLLER_* Floating around the bend Floating around the bend Where light divides the holler Body is merged between moss and stone Where blood finds color She dissolves in the bank and I'm left alone Writhing in the clay The water rises and sways Betray the human shape The water takes you away Final embrace Tangled in the vine Shackled to the floor of the Earth My vision restored From the fog you emerge Carriеd by standing water We collide with shouldеr and steel Sundered from your spirit lays your body The sense of touch reminds me that it's real And from within you, I hear a whimper A voice echoes in an empty form Inside my head, you say I told you so We should've left before the storm A tear in the fabric of life "We have each other and that's all we'll ever need" I crawl out of the river Shaking hands with blood underneath my nails I am reborn in a life without you *_GOD KNOWS_* Flashes of blood and bone An empty vessel in between its home It wraps around my feet Pooling like wet cement, I sink Clawing to get away But every branch I hold onto breaks Where do I go from here? Panic sets in and I start to shake Loathing Crushed by the weight of the terror All life reduced to stone A beam of light pulls you above the ground Out of the water through the parted clouds All life reduced to stone I am withering at the helm Suffocating, and overwhelmed I hand you to God, carve your name Everything burns, nothing remains (Matt King) We are gathered here today Under the pressure of a weary gaze Hydrate the garden Decorate the grave Lowered beneath the dirt (Bryan Garris) The trumpet toils for the blood I harvest Flashes of blood and bone An empty vessel in between its home God knows I belong to hell That's why he left me here by myself God knows *_FORCED TO STAY_* Bound to the trunk of a tree stretched out for miles Cast a shadow on all I know of life I can't seem to shake the thought The light is taken by the hearse It's a lesson never learned Everyday is getting worse I dissolve into the pain Pour myself into the guilt Hanging over me like skies of rain All the blood that I have spilt Carried you to heaven's gate I am forced to stay A celebration The finale of life The marriage between Soil and bride The blood denies the rose To carry only memories of loss A vigil on the side of the road Her body now belongs to the cross I am judged and set on fire At the stand falling deaf to their cries The bleating of a hundred voices In unison asking me why Why did I take a chance and gamble life? Every sign points me back to the dorm In my head, you say "I told you so" We should've left before the storm The rain washes you away The rain washes you away The rain washes you away (Forced to stay) The rain washes you away (Forced to stay) The rain washes you away (Forced to stay) The rain washes you away (Forced to stay) *_CONTORTED IN THE FAILLE_* Abandoned by light Swaying beneath the veil Beyond the doubt of remission Contorted in the faille Whispering sweet nothings Beneath a daze, mind consumed Pulling me your infectious hum Asleep at the foot of your tomb Dust settles on a broken frame Inside our house I haven't touched a thing Focused on corners where lights now fade Watching shadows float on broken wings Sirens pull me to you Ringing through my ears Months have passed but the winter stays Cold embraced by fear Poison trails down my throat like gasoline Plants deep in my blood like roots Sets fire to my memory Burns all Left destitute I rot Figures dancing in the blur Seeing doubles I focus in Feel the warm embrace of skin Twist tongues, feel you in my throat Collapse in the bed, held by your ghost Caged by the thought of devotion Solidified by the touch of death In the dawn, I hear you crooning Could this all be in my head? I had to investigate the full lyrics. Man, when I realized that this animated film existed I instantly felt worrying urgency and I had to physically prepare. I went in my room, noise cancelling on, curtains shut and lyrics up on my phone. I now get shivers listening to permanent blue. I could have lived life not knowing, yet here I am.

The vocals are so fucking visceral now, the grit to the edge of his voice that just makes it sound so fucking painful. Its like he's screaming Glass from within his lungs. Everything from the vocals to the instruments, the transitions, the flow, all of it has grown into such a perfect little package of sharply packed blades welded and forged onto the edge of a massive Warhammer. Goddamn Knocked Loose, This is a masterpiece.

Hi! I am just wondering, has anyone else here lost anyone and relate to this? I'd be super curious to hear others takes on this music/video/art. It's so friggin eerie man, my sister died in a car accident in 2012...we played God Only Knows at her wake...so much of this entire experience, the music and the video DEEPLY move me, I feel it in my core and soul. I have chills SO intensely. This is so haunting and beautiful. I feel it very deeply in my heart and soul. This is heavy and REAL. I am so incredibly appreciative for this beautiful, wonderful, crushing work of art. Thank you Knocked Loose. My sister Nathalie and I leap frogged our musical taste together, showing each other bands, developing our music tastes simultaneously and building a shared library of music. I have no doubt she would be loving some Knocked Loose if she were still alive. She is half the reason I am even here in the first place, she moved me to hardcore and eventually veganism etc. ❤❤❤ R.I.P. This is a prime example of a band embracing their potential and pushing the envelope. I always liked Laugh Tracks, but I would sometimes poke fun at all the simple “cave man” style riffs. To go from that to A Different Shade was a huge step up. Then from that to this, something even more technical yet still maintain their core sound? Well done. The breakdown at 1:13 and 2:53 is very interesting rhythmically: it's two bars of 4/4 followed by two bars of 6/8, giving the feeling of metric modulation. It sounds like the tempo changes, but it's just the interplay between the 2:3 metric modulation.
@tylerbaars11733 жыл бұрын
This is the simplest explanation of how I can do this in my own music that I've seen thank you!

We shouldn't forget the absolutely mind -bending use of cymbals in "Forced to Stay" at 9:30. The first time I heard this, I was speechless. I've never heard anything like this use of percussion in metal before (unless someone can point me to some examples?).
@bildom2 жыл бұрын
Considering the tempo, I'd say it's a bar of 6/4. Otherwise they would actually be slowing down the tempo to half speed during the 6/8 bar, or playing one slow 4/4 bar before the 6/8 bar
@Peculate2 жыл бұрын
@@bildom 6/8 is more appropriate because it's a compound duple meter (ie, two groups of three eighth notes). 6/4 would imply two groups of three quarter notes. But the rhythmic pulse is sixteenth and eighth notes, not quarter notes. In fact the larger pulse is dotted quarter notes, so 6/4 could even be misleading. 6/8 is more accurate.
@bildom2 жыл бұрын
